Sons of Anarchy Review: Gunning for SAMCRO

by at . Comments

Shots may have been fired at school children on the Sons of Anarchy Season 6 premiere, but the fallout from this horrific act started to be felt on"One One Six" - and it's clear who the target will be for Lee Toric and company:

SAMCRO.

Indeed, Kurt Sutter didn't use the controversial premiere ending to push any kind of political agenda, that much is certain. He used the event to highlight an issue Jax has been clamoring for since he was elected President: getting the club out of the gun business and into things that are a lot more trashy than bloody.

But it won't be easy.

Showdown with Jax

There's Galen, who isn't content to simply take his business elsewhere; and there's Toric, who is well aware of just what business SAMCRO is wrapped up in and is intent on bringing it down at all costs, actual signed confessions or agreements be damned.

The character is a little too one-dimensional for my liking at the moment. Yes, we learned a bit about his past this week and how his unorthodox methods resulted in the highest arrested record in his field office. But he's now just a drugged-out sociopath who will go to absolutely any length to avenge his sister's death?

With such an actor as Donal Logue behind him, I'd welcome a few more layers to Mr. Lee Toric.

He could learn a lot, for example, from Nero Padilla. Jimmy Smits has crafted an intricate character who initially got out of the gang game... then reluctantly joined back up... and is now trying to straddle the line between right and wrong in that world.

Nero is able to justify shooting his own cousin because he turned on his family first, yet he broke down over the death of the troubled child's mother, especially when he (rightfully) believed that Jax orchestrated her demise. This is a very fine line to straddle. For the sake of the club's future, that mother most certainly had to be killed - but what kind of person wants to be part of a club that must resort to such methods in order to survive?

You can see the constant pain on Nero's face as he wonders what he's doing back in this sort of world, one in which innocents clearly will die and one in which he won't last very long in if he can't wrap his head - or his heart, to be more specific - around that fact.

It's also a line Jax has claimed time and again that he doesn't want to walk. No, really, Tara, this time we're going legit! I swear! For reals! No more guns!

Can you blame her for not believing her man? For lying to him about Wendy? For making custody arrangements in case something happens to her boys' parents? This is a marriage wrapped in untruths, making Jax once again far more like Clay than he'd ever wish to admit. It's easy to say you want to go straight, it's a lot harder to actually go straight, especially when you're lying to both your wife and yourself.

No, Jax, remaining in the club is NOT honoring Opie's memory. Opie was a family man who adored his first wife and his two children. The best way to actually pay respect to your fallen BFF would be to do the same and follow through on your one-time promise: Get Tara, Abel and Thomas as far away from Charming as possible.

And let's hope Charming soon pushes for the same fate. While I remain on the fence about SOA using a school shooting for storyline fodder, it's already out there and we need to see the town's response at some point soon. You know, the town SAMCRO has sworn to protect and all. How will citizens react to the presence of gun-toting bikers now that a few of their own have been gunned down by one of those guns?

So we're left wondering about Clay's motivations, remembering that Jax is still expected to deliver Tig at some point and also muttering one thing over and over following this solid installment:

Poor Juice. Poor, poor Juice.

Kurt sutter said that jax WILL be a mix of both JOHN AND CLAY but so far right now what we're seeing is jax turning into clay.

I think something did go down while tara was in jail and asking her boss a preganacy test? yeah.........BUT i know i heard 'divorce' coming out of her lawyer's mouth so i guess whatever happend to her from the inside could result to that. It is jax's falut that she ended up in jail trying to talk otto out of the rico case. I'm wondering if she will find out that he cheated on her. Anyhow these two are NOT going to last. As for bobby and juicy.......B is just doing his own thing for now and i wish juice and chibbs can patch up their friendship......deffantly can FEEL the tension btw those 2.

@jax'sgirl - I thought so too about Tara. I fount it odd asking for a pregnancy test after Gemma punched her in the gut last season and said "I hope you're not pregnant". She asks for the test, and closed the door so we can't see the rest of the conversation, and cried during uncomfortable sex with Jax...I wonder if we are right and she was raped in prison but is keeping quiet because she knows it won't help Jax out of his dark descent. Won't that be a kicker if true? He cheats on her while she's being raped because of him. Way to go, Jax!

Jaxs-girl

@Rowdy, I forgot about the Outsiders. I was thinking Soul Man.

Jaxs-girl

Last night was a shocker. Jax is getting darker and darker. By the end of the season he's going to be Clay. I know Nero, Gemma and Chibs knew Jax was lying, but he was so convincing. That's when I knew he was going "bad". Poor Juice, now I wish they would have killed him. I can't stand to see him being used this way. He may try to kill himself again, and succeed this time around. Tig......go ahead and turn him over to Pope's right hand man b/c Tig is being treated like shit too. Jax talks to him any kind of way. It's sad. Nero is going to break away from SAMCRO. He has to. Hopefully he'll see Gemma for what she really is. I don't know what Tara's plan is but she has something up her sleeve. I don't think it's divorce, but who knows with Sutter. I just want her and Jax to be in love again. I think something happened to her in jail. The brother had Otto raped he may have had someone rape her. That may be why she didn't want to see Jax and why she was crying when they were making love. The rape angle is just a hunch.....don't hold that against me. Calm down! Just wondering......They don't think the police will find it odd that the school shooter's mom is missing.......IJS

@Rowdy thank you for jogging my memory of the outsiders with C THOMAS HOWELL

Eula, are you thinking of 'the Outsiders'? I'm not forming any opinions about the appropriateness of SAMCRO or Jax's actions yet. Any time I have on Sons, there's a twist later that makes me rethink my position!

I completely love the character that Nero has become! I admit last season when he first showed up I remember thinking he was a freakin clown! Again, it all comes back to how well these characters are drawn up by Sutter. For Nero to be the one providing the moral compass to the President of the Club, just shows how far off track these guys have allowed themselves to get. The Jax and Tara thing is just sad, each of them has lost their way and used outside people/situations to find their way instead of each other. To the point that they can't even look each other in the eyes or sustain a meaningful conversation. I feel for Juice, every scene I see him in I just want to give the dude a hug!! He needs to go NOMAD with Bobby for a while, and good for Bobby I'm glad to see he at least is doing what he can to get some space and look at things going on differently. In terms of this season being darker, they all said it in the interviews posted here before the season began...This season is about the chickens coming to roost, the things the Club has done, the things that Clay has done and the things that Jax has done are all coming back on them this season to set up the final act next season. I believe most of the actors interviewed said this season was the most violent as well.

Toric is 😤😖disguiting he goes into diosa and he looks at girls and pick out a girl that to me look similar to his sister he might kill her and others to bring heat down on diosa. Love Nero he plays they role well. Did any one notice: pony boy: aka C Thomas Howell I saw his name but did not see him at first but then I watched it the 2nd time and saw him I was like wow😳he is getting old. I can't think of that movie back in the day that C Thomas Howell played in.
