Agents of SHIELD Round Table: "Girl in the Flower Dress"

Viewers met a new member of Centipede on Agents of SHIELD this week.

What was the reaction of our TV Fanatic Round Table to what felt like a darker episode than usual of this ABC series? Panelists Jim Garner, Kate Brooks, Christine Orlando and Ellyssa (from ShieldTV.net) have gathered around to debate that question and many others from "Girl in the Flower Dress."

Pull up a virtual chair and join the discussion below...

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene or quote from the episode?
Ellyssa: My favorite moment off the top of my head is Coulson giving Skye "the finger."

Kate: Definitely the scene where Skye and Miles were in the interrogation room and Ward walked in. The look on Skye's face when he walked in, she looked like a hurt puppy. I truly believed she was ashamed of her decisions. This is kind of where I knew she was apart of SHIELD and not The Rising Tide.

Christine: "When someone breaks into my house I usually don't invite them to stay, but that's me." I've really been loving all of the iteration between Melinda and Coulson. It's frequently both telling and funny.

Jim: I loved Skye opening the door and Melinda holding her shirt... talk about BUSTED! Actually Melinda was in rare form, as I also like the quote that Christine pointed out above.

Where you surprised by the Melinda and Coulson's solution for neutralizing Scorch?
Ellyssa: Not really. At the end of the day their mission is to protect people and if there's only one way to do that, that's the road they go down.

Kate: A little, but I get why they did it, they didn't have a choice. He wasn't going to stop and they didn't have the back up to stop him.

Christine: I knew there was going to be trouble when Coulson quipped, "Oh crap. They gave him a name." Scorch was completely out of control by the time they got to him. It was simply too late to save him.

Jim: Like Christine, I knew they were in trouble when Coulson pointed out he had a name. While Mike was going around the bend in the pilot, he was still "Mike" and that little bit is what they were able to use to save him. Not so with Scorch, poor guy.

Did Coulson do the right thing by letting Skye stay?
Ellyssa: We've seen Coulson place a lot of trust in his "gut" and I think it serves him well. He knows Skye has issues but I think his gut is telling him that at the end of the day, she's going to be an amazing asset.

Kate: Yes, at first I was like "how are they going to play it out so that Skye can stay" and I was really surprised to find out that her life was on her little drive. I expected it to be SHIELD secrets not Skye trying to find her parents. Plot twist!

Christine: As Ellyssa said, Coulson relies on his gut... but is it really his? I guess that's a question for another time but if that's really her own history on that drive, then I say yes, a second chance was in order.

Jim: I agree with Kate, Yes he did. I was also surprised that the thumb-stick she had was everything on her parents that had been redacted by SHIELD. Very clever!

Skye's been looking for her parents and SHIELD is involved in hiding them... any theories?
Ellyssa: None whatsoever. I had not even suspected that S.H.I.E.L.D. was covering up whatever happened with her parents.

Kate: Since a bunch of information has been redacted, you know that her mom or dad was or is apart of government secrets or something covert. My theory is that she has been connected to SHIELD all along, whether that be her parents were apart of SHIELD or they had some sort of ability that put them on SHIELD's list. This is a long shot but maybe Skye has super human abilities but she doesn't know it yet! Bazinga!

Christine: Honestly, my first thought was that Coulson could be her father. He's got such a paternal feel with his team but there may not be enough of an age difference there. Like Kate, I think it would be cool if they eventually found out that Skye had inherited some latent superpower. That could be a lot of fun.

Jim: Maybe Skye's gift's with computer comes from the fact that she's a SHIELD baby. There are SO many ways this could turn out. What is her last name is Rogers or something. As they say, the Skye is the limit.

How good are your Battleship skills on a scale of 1 to 5?
Ellyssa: I haven't played it since I was a child and don't even remember if I was any good back then!

Kate: I'm a solid 7. You can't sink my battleship!

Christine: I haven't played in years. I use to babysit an 8 year old who cheated in Battleship. I was completely appalled! Of course cheating is wrong but somehow cheating in Battleship felt akin to sacrilege.

Jim: My wife and I play each other on our iPads fairly often. I'm a solid 6, but my wife is a pretty strong 8 and kicks my butt on a regular basis.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 Episode 5 Quotes

Raina: You need a similar name. More powerful name. A name like Scorch.
Chan: Scorch? You're joking?
Raina: Have you ever heard of Steve Rogers? No? Captain America, now he's on the news and lunch box and a poster on the on the wall.

Skye: I don't want to ruin the moment, but I'm going to have to respond with G4. Say it Ward. Say it.
Ward: You sank my battleship.
