American Horror Story Review: Who's the Next Supreme?

at .  Updated at .

After decades of calm in New Orleans, war has been declared between the Salem witches and Marie Laveau. And it's not going to be pretty.

When Fiona returned to Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, she brought trouble to the Coven. Her selfishness has put the Coven at risk from outside forces that proved too powerful for them in the past, as well as, brought turmoil within the Salem witches.

American Horror Story Season 3 Episode 4 was the hour that showcased the history of the two sets of witches, demonstrated their powers and will of force and unveiled how Fiona became Supreme despite killing her mentor.

The End of a Truce

Fiona is a horrible Supreme. She left her Coven behind and her return stirred up new and old troubles. The truth behind how she became Supreme was quite intriguing, especially that Spalding cut out his own tongue to protect her out of love. That explains why he's willing to cover up for her time after time.

The Council of Witches attempted to figure out what happened to Madison, but were unsuccessful. It's too bad that Myrtle doesn't seem to be a strong enough foe to overcome Fiona's manipulation. She tried as a young woman to take Fiona down and failed. And, it doesn't look like she'll do any better this time, unless of course she can get the future Supreme to help her.

Yes, Madison was not the next Supreme. Fiona killed her for nothing. And, now poor Madison is sitting among Spalding's enormous doll collection as his plaything. Did he pull out a wedding dress in order to marry the dead witch? And, what was that he was wearing? A nightgown and bonnet? He's an unusual cat.

When the Council of Witches first arrived, Cordelia assumed it was because of the attack on Queenie. She was mauled by the Minotaur, died, and was revived via Fiona's magic. I'm still not sure why Queenie went out there in the first place and basically gave herself to the Minotaur, but that's what happened and she nearly died.

At least, Queenie has Madame LaLaurie's gratitute for saving the old lady's life. That debt will need to be repaid at some point. Fiona didn't stand by and do nothing, she decapitated the Minotaur and sent his head in a box to Marie Laveau. And, the war was started. I doubt we've the last of the Minotaur since his eyes were still moving.

Marie used a ritual that she'd used before in the 1960s to get revenge. She woke up the dead and sent the zombies to the Academy to attack the witches. And to cause more pain, the first to arrive were Madame LaLaurie's dead daughters. Ouch. That fight is personal! Though, perhaps Fiona can "cure" the girls and bring them back to life. I'm not sure that's a good answer either, since they weren't the nicest back when they were alive.

I'm not sure which is worse the turmoil within the Coven or that from Marie. Both could bring an end to the Salem witch line.  In the bathroom, Cordelia was attack by someone in a black hooded outfit with some kind of liquid. If it was a human attack, I'd guess it was acid, but given that witches are involved, it could have been a magical potion. Who attacked her? Was it from within or outside of the Coven.

Odds and Ends

  • Marie Laveau's snakes freak me out!
  • I'm not sure what to make of the Zoe-Kyle story. Did she poison his tuna salad? And, where did he disappear to? If he shows up at the Frat House, that's not going to go over well.
  • Cordelia's husband is odd. That's one thing that Fiona's got right. A shot to the head? That's not the future she was looking for from him.
  • It seems odd that given all the powers that witches have that none of them can use a location spell to find the dead witches. How is Fiona able to keep them from finding or knowing about her kills?
  • The cute neighbor brought Nan cookies! That put a smile on my face just like it did Nan's. It's unfortunate that he's now going to witness the zombie attack on the school.

Who do you think is the next Supreme? Will Fiona continue to get away with her nefarious activities? How crazy is Spalding? Will Madison forever be his doll?

American Horror Story Season 3 Episode 4 Quotes

The truce is over.

Marie Laveau

She would have made a lousy Supreme and that's something this Coven can't afford at this moment in history. It's my duty to stay vital.
