The Vampire Diaries Review: Garden of (Getting) Even

at . Comments

Despite what you may have read on Twitter or been told in The CW promo for "Original Sin," the Ripper did not return to The Vampire Diaries tonight. Stefan managed to suppress his blood thirsty past self.

Instead, viewers were introduced to an entirely different kind of dangerous being: a crazy, controlling, paranoid, dream-implanting, spell-binding witch named Qetsiyah. And she was totally awesome.

Janina Gavankar as Tess

Janina Gavankar (always a TV Fanatic favorite) played this character as both vulnerable and violent, dangerous and deranged. She's not a villain. She's not a protagonist. She's simply a woman scorned... who happens to be a very powerful witch, meaning those that cross her don't end up with their faces cut out of photos.

They end up with their one true love's heart cut out of her body.

Qetsiyah was the driving force behind an episode that managed to be both very focused and very scattered. There was no Bonnie, no Jeremy, no Caroline and only sort of a trace of Matt (more on that below). The hour told just one story, but what a bat $hit crazy story it is....

  • Silas was in love with Amara, the first Petrova Doppelganger. He wanted the two of them to live forever, so he pretended to be in love with Qetsiyah in order for her to make them an immortality spell.
  • Then he stole it. He took it with Amara and Qetsiyah created The Cure in retaliation, which she fed to Amara in what we'll affectionately call The Garden of Getting Even.
  • She then tried to force Silas to take it, but he refused... so she locked him away for 2,000 years and watched from The Other Side (which she also created as a barrier for Silas), growing more and more frustrated when he was freed and The Hunters she sent after him failed to do their job.
  • When Bonnie lowered the veil, Qetsiyah escaped and set her sights on Stefan because she could use his mind to get inside Silas' and prevent him from compelling everyone and their grandmother.
  • Which she succeeded in doing this week... and here we are.

It's complicated stuff. All the exposition bogged down the episode a bit, especially when we're talking more doppelgangers, curses, witches, other sides, lowered veils, shadowed selves, mind compulsion and Travelers. Not exactly your everyday fare.

Yes, this is what often makes The Vampire Diaries so great, its total craziness and off-the-wall storytelling. But the momentum train (choo-choo, right, Damon?) is forced to slow down when viewers must hit rewind multiple times just to make sense of everything. So let's cut to the bottom line here:

Qetsiyah - sorry, not calling you Tessa, that's too simple a name for an admittedly complicated creature - is after Katherine to use her blood as The Cure than can finally kill Silas. And Silas is also after Katherine to purportedly drain her blood and rid the world of The Cure once and for all.

Oh, and the universe wants Stefan to end up with Elena. Or at least the doppelganger who looks like Stefan to end up with the doppelganger who looks like Elena. It's an interesting twist. It throws an interesting obstacle into the whole Delena 4 Eva thing.

Damon has taken on werewolves, hybrids, evil professors, mean uncles, angry hunters, blonde cheerleaders and Jeremy. The guy is good. He's tough and he's got charm that could even make Hayley on The Originals smile. But can he defeat destiny? And is destiny really working against him? Let's remember the source of that revelation here: Qetsiyah. She isn't exactly the most stable individual.

But while Qetsiyah was thoroughly entertaining, the destiny issue casts new questions over the show's perpetual love triangle and I appreciate the tight narrative at play here, I did have two major beefs with the installment:

  1. Enough with various characters taking on the personas of other characters already! It was a lazy storytelling crutch for Silas to constantly fool those around him on The Vampire Diaries Season 4 when he magically appeared as their friends or loved ones and it's a lazy storytelling crutch now to have Gregor inhabit Matt's body... especially because we know nothing about Gregor and Nadia. These Travelers have just been dropped in our laps and Katherine spoke for all of us when she screamed: Who are you and what do you want?!?
  2. The amnesia angle is dumb. Stupid. Ridiculous. Awful It's the most tiresome cliche in the soap opera world and it's rather depressing that The Vampire Diaries would actually resort to it here.

What did everyone else think? Where does "Original Sin" rank among craziest episodes in Vampire Diaries history? Are you buying this Damon vs. Destiny thing? Do you find the amnesia development and mind-numbingly lame as I do? Was Caroline off hooking up with Jesse while all this was going on?

And, seriously, how awesome is Qetsiyah?!

and Stelena has a heart beat ladies and gentlemen!!!! Though I do think the show might pull a Stefan with Katherine and Damon gets "the girl" Elena stunt. Which would be stupid and a cop out. But I do repeat STELENA HAS A HEARTBEAT!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just thinking about the Elena doppolenger. Tessa said there were more doppolenger a of Elena. But I remember klaus saying it take 500 hundred years to see another the reason why klaus never saw any of them is because Silas is 2.000 years old. So 1,500 years ago there was a Elena doppolenger out there and then when klaus was born there was tita and then Katherine and then Elena . And probe the same goes as for Stefan. We might meet the other doppolenger some day.

It doesn't neccisarily mean that the other doppelgängers were vampires. They could have all been humans and lived normal lives and died at normal ages. It just so happened that Katherine was turned into a vampire and them she turned Stefan .. So maybe the other Silas's an Amorah's that were running around lived normal lives and just were never found by Klaus.

Ohh my god!! I havent watched the episode yet but just reading the comments had made me more confusing. I mean the stories are so convulsed in just one episode: tessa, silas, dopplegangers, stephan damon, elena, katherine, the cure, the other side, inmortality, Who is with who, who ends up with who, who said what to who, what will happen if one ends up with the other one, the curse, etc All of this in one episode? Now what a mess!! Do I need a map to follow the story? hehe!! I mean slow down writers or Julie P. there is still plenty time to address each story!!

although Stefans amnesia angle does set up a possibly and I mean slight possible chance that him and Caroline could maybe hookup ?? Idk..... I have always loved their chemistry together.

Also, did anyone notice that because Stefan forgot his memory he's not going to remember anything about Katherine's past history, therefore Katherine is obviously going to take the chance and sneak into his life because she has the opportunity and she's a human? Katherine will most likely end up with Stefan because they are meant to be, they fell in-love with each other at the first sight, it's like they knew each other. And Katherine has never turned and looked back for anybody besides Stefan

Has anyone noticed when Stefan heard that Katherine was human again he was really happy and was very surprised? Also I believe that TVD and Julie Plec is hinting for a "Stefan & Katherine" relationship because he was surprised and happy and interested in the fact that Katherine was human again. Also Tessa did not tell us who Stefan will be together with, it could be Katherine or Elena but it's most likely going to be Katherine. Stefan was always attracted to Katherine when he first met her, when he first met her he told her he loved her and Silas had told Amora that when he looked at her she looked like an angel, and Stefan told Katherine that she was an angel, for Elena when she looked at Stefan she felt like a broken toy. Katherine had always been attracted to Stefan, and Stefan was always attracted to Katherine, the only reason he felt the need to know Elena was because he thought she was Katherine, he's always loved Katherine but she was this "monster" and Elena was not, this is why he chose Elena, Katherine watched over him her whole life. Also, Stefan MET Katherine first, and he fell in-love with her FIRST. Therefore, they belong together. Also I believe the lineage goes like this, the universe has been trying to get them together, anyways I believe it goes like this:
Amora and Silas
= Another "Amora" doppleganger was born to replace Amora. Silas already has his true love, so another "Silas" doppleganger was born. And both of those dopplegangers had found each other I believe her name was tetta? Or something, I can't remember. After those two got together, another generation of Dopplegangers was born, which was Katherine and later after a while she had found Silas's next doppleganger which was Stefan, they were suppose to be together but failed to, so another doppleganger which is Elena was created, but Stefan belongs with Katherine because of their ages, Elena would most likely find another Stefan doppleganger. After Katherine and Stefan. Ether way, I believe we are going to see a romance between Stefan and Katherine, so that people who are fans of Damon and Elena can keep their romance, Stefan is going to end up with Katherine. Tessa did not hint it was going to be Elena, BUT it's most likely Katherine.

The amnesia angle is a CW Favorite..... I have seen it ad nauseam on Smallville and Supernatural alone!!... I too hate that Vampire Diaries has resorted to going there with one of the characters.

If the dopplegangers are destined to be together then how do we know who Stefan is supposed to be with - Katherine or Elena? The preview for next week really annoys me... I hope that it's not actually Elena and Stefan kissing! Maybe it's a dream? Or Katherine did her hair differently?

Good episode. I can honestly say I'm totally confused. Who are the travelers? I mean what do they do? We know absolutely noting about them yet they're already a big part of this season so far. I knew Katherine's blood would now be the cure that isn't shocking. Tessa is completely crazy I am not sure how I feel about her yet. Stefan with amnesia might be interesting but how long do you really think it will take for his memory to come back the next episode of maybe the one after that. I don't think I believe the whole the universe wants the 2 dopplegangers to be together so Elena and Damon's relationship is going to fail no matter what I think they deserve to be together. I can't wait till the next episode it looks really good.

I know I said it doesn't bother me that you have a psychic connection to your ex-boyfriend, but I don't need the play by the play.

Play nice. Or I'm gonna revisit the deep, dark well idea.
