Grey's Anatomy Review: Saying Sorry

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Callie's crazy, complex life became even more complicated on Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 9. At the start of the installment, I was wondering when our favorite orthopedic surgeon would simply catch a break. Quickly, I realized that break wasn't going to happen any time soon.

A Lot On Her Mind

In an extremely intense hour, Callie was put through the wringer as she found herself faced with a malpractice lawsuit. Moreover, she wasn't the only one affected as both Jo and Cristina had to take the stand as well.

With flashbacks, we learned that the plaintiff was a patient and a former Olympian snowboarder. Referred by Cristina four months ago, Callie was the "Ortho goddess" that Travis Reed wanted to help him with a "Peterson hip replacement". Travis willingly chose Callie knowing that she had never performed the surgery before.

Complications during the surgery led to a botched surgery, infection, a revision surgery, a heart surgery, and finally, the loss of both of his legs. It was very tragic, but I strongly believe the jury made the right decision in finding Callie not guilty. She did the best that she could and that was evident.

I was really glad that Meredith was there when Callie found the letter from the clinical trial. Dated three weeks prior to Travis' surgery, the letter stated that there were five instances of infection after the hip replacement surgeries led to the surgeries being discontinued. Meredith convinced Callie not to confess in court that she found the letter as it could sway the jury's decision. Ultimately, I think this was the right move.

Side note: I thought the casting was great as every single line was perfectly delivered by Travis and even the lawyers.

Sharing News With Dad

In the midst of the chaos, Callie's father arrived in Seattle to support his daughter. I always love when Callie's dad is around. I'm glad he was there for his Calliope. Also, it was awesome that the other doctors also showed up to also show Callie their support.

Through the flashbacks, we also learned some surprising details about Calzona's marriage prior to Arizona cheating. From discussing babies to choosing sperm donors, from looking at new homes to first finding out Arizona was actually pregnant, it all felt lighthearted and I nearly forgot about all the recent Calzona drama. Unfortunately, though, we learned that Arizona miscarried.

While I liked getting a better understanding of what exactly happened to Calzona and maybe reasoning behind why Arizona did what she did, I felt a bit cheated like Callie. I'm a huge fan of flashbacks, but I feel like we missed some major Calzona moments as we only saw glimpses of what happened.

Other thoughts:

  • The father-daughter duo shared some majorly touching, unforgettable moments. When he confessed to cheating on Callie's mother and explained his reasoning behind mistakes and forgiveness, I knew Callie would immediately want to give Arizona a second chance. Do you think Calzona stand a chance or will Arizona's fling with Leah stand in the way of their happily ever after?
  • Is it crazy that I'm hoping some of the cast members from Private Practice will eventually make an appearance? Besides, doesn't Amelia want to meet her new little nephew?
  • Be sure to return next week to chime in on our Grey's Anatomy Round Table

While Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 8 was likely the weakest installment thus far this season, "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" was solid and featured Callie as the rock star we all know and love.

Seriously, Sara Ramirez was amazing. I also really enjoyed how different this episode was and appreciated the way the Calzona flashbacks added to the storyline. I'm stoked to see what else Shonda and company have up their sleeves for the remainder of Grey's Anatomy Season 10

There was a lot that I loved about this episode, but the time line was just out of whack for me with the flashbacks? When did Arizona and Callie have all this time to decide to have a baby, get pregnant, have a miscarriage, and the cheating?? It was a lazy way for Shonda to explain the weak Storyline of Arizona's cheating! I did love that we are getting to see their story move forward. I love, love, love Callie's father. I wish that we could see him a little bit more with Callie. By the way could someone please tell me what Arizona was saying to Callie at the door when Carlos was staring her down? I couldn't make it out even after listening a few times? Some of the references to Arizona's and Callie's past was great. The good man in a storm, the butterflies, Arizona finding Callie crying in the bathroom. So it will be interesting to see if AZ admits to sleeping with Leah to Callie, before someone else tells her. Great episode!

callie was talking to Sofia and Az and Carlos was watching Carlos give her the evil eye.... When Callie picks Sofia up and hands her to Az, Az says "Your father is making me super anxious!" And Callie turns and looks at her father then says "uh ya you should go"

I am usually pretty forgiving of Grey's when it comes to medical accuracy. It's a TV show, I enjoy the relationships. I don’t watch for the medicine. But if you are doing an episode that revolves around a malpractice suit, inaccuracy is going to stand out. Also, I am not a big fan of Callie or Arizona so I kind of zoned that stuff out this episode.
--First a cardiology patient in the hospital for any reason: Cards is on board and seeing this patient daily.
--The scrub nurse and circulating nurse keep a running sponge count. They usually have a pretty good idea of where each one is. At all times. Also, after they closed he would have had an X-ray to check for the sponge and once he was stable they would have removed it.
--Why did his HR increase during the operation? These are things you try to figure out in a cardiology patient; yet another reason cardiology would have been on board.
--ICU/floor nurses pay a little bit closer attention to their patients then shown tonight. Not too often do I walk into a room and am surprised by a new complaint (say gangrenous legs) that I didn’t hear about from a nurse first.
--Ortho surgeons are paranoid doctors. Their bogey man is post-op infections and complications. They also know that there can be a learning curve for major joint replacement surgeries. So I seriously doubt one would try out a new approach on an Olympic athlete.
--Most hospitals have to approve a new device/implant/procedure/technique/medication before they allow it to be used because of liability concerns. They would probably not have approved a joint that was still experimental to be used in an Olympic athlete. Ya know, the kind of high profile individual that will sue if/when things go wrong. At least not without a pretty serious liability waiver.
-Didn’t Callie email the surgeons in Europe? Why did they mail the report to her, and not respond to the email? They wanted to support the USPS maybe, I don’t know. And why in the world do you throw that away at the courthouse. She works in a hospital has all private information destroyed, so take advantage.
There were others, but I have already spent way too much energy on this. Now I feel better, and hopefully next week it goes back to regular Grey’s.

Wow ! These points you made were totally true. I wondered about a few but, like I usually tell myself, for the purpose of the show, let's not even go there lol. That sponge... and the new procedure ! How come Callie asked for info and didn't wait for the rest (since she said that she that she only heard good things. what about the bad !) . I swear, tossing that letter in the courthouse, WHO DOES THAT !!! All I could think about was that somebody was going to open it, find it, and present it to the judge .

Nice post! I don't work in the medical field, but I definitely was wondering about a few of the points that you made. I'm glad you brought them up and I especially wondered why the heck Callie would choose to toss the report at the courthouse as well.

I really liked this episode. I like it because the new interns (except for Jo) had very little or no screen time. I" m trying to tolerate the other interns and i am beginning to except for one (and it's not Shane, or Leah, hmmm) This episode was intense as it was sad and human in a professional and personal way. I was glad to see the doctors stand by Callie in the malpractice suit and I've been waiting for ANY of the shows regulars getting some screen time!! I payed more attention to this episode that any of the past episodes this season without getting bored!! I liked seeing Callie"s Dad (Love Hector Elizondo) giving his support to her AND fatherly advice (uuh, a confession?) I just hope this leads to more screen time with the regular shows doctors to keep my attention going.....

You know, we spend a lot of time calling out Grey's Anatomy for its mythical ideas which this episode was full. They have to do better, you don't have to throw out facts to write a fictional scenario. You are write on every point but what took the cake was the letter in the mail. They would have sent email attachment of the study of the post op infections. But I would prefer to believe that Callie being as thorough as she is would have delved more deeply into the cases of the five patients that received the implant, since there were only five. She could also have put an intern on the case for the research if she didn't have the time. Aside from that, showing the losses was fun to watch, you can't win them all.

I really liked this episode and am glad SR got screen time. She's a wonderful actress. There has to be conflict and break ups to get the show moving. I don't care which direction the story takes as long as it's credible and interesting. I can see Grey's moving Christina out of Mer's orbit and Torres in. Obviously Callie & Mer won't have the depth of relationship the twisted sisters had but it totally makes sense. Mer & Callie have families, not to mention Sandra Oh's impending departure. The trial was very well done. We could see and empathize with both sides. Once the information about the joint becomes public, the plaintiff can seek damages from the manufacturer. The right decision was reached. I also loved the support from Callie's friends and colleagues.

Like you, I can definitely see Callie and Mer becoming better friends given the sense of family that they both share. No one will ever replace Cristina as Mer's person but it's certainly a start of something new.

1)I was hoping Mr. Torres would speak to Callie in Spanish and she would reply in Spanish. Sara Ramirez is smoking hot but she's an inferno when she speaks Spanish. I have no idea what she's saying, and I don't care.2)Wouldn't it have been something if when Arizona lay on the bed and said you need to put your clothes on and leave the person she was talking to was some anonymous woman and not Leah? Talk about drama.3) I too felt a little cheated with the flashbacks. Thought it was going to be a little more in depth.4) Weren't we told there were four Shepherd sisters? Thought we'd meet the fourth by now. Heck where is Momma Shepherd?

The episode was AMAZING!!!! I loved the medical story mixed in with the legal ramifications, I knew they would find Callie NOT guilty because the plaintiff clearly wanted and had to talk Callie into the surgery. I loved the way they filmed this episode and the flashbacks were awesome. Loved Mer and Callie moments. I REALLY hope that Leah says something and Callie finds out about Arizona and Leah because Callie DOES NOT deserve Arizona. Cheating once it's okay it's forgivable but come on a second time, NO WAY.
Side Note:
April and Matthew belong together, REALLY hope that they get married!!!!

I'm rooting for Mapril as well, but I won't be holding my breath.

I loved this episode I felt sorry for Callie and that guy that was sueing her. I now hope that her and Arizona get back together.

Sarah silva

I really liked this episode, it strayed from the usual format but I liked it,
I liked getting insight into what Calzona went through the last 4 months, I still do not think that it was an excuse for Arizona to cheat but it was good to see what they were going through.
I am glad that Callie won her case.
I too new Callie would go to Arizona and tell her she wanted to try again as soon as her dad said he cheated once and if her mom had not forgiven him 38 years ago there would be no Callie.
I also knew that Leah would be with Arizona.
If Arizona keeps thing quiet about Leah it will come out eventually and Callie will be upset and end things for good or she will realize they were separated and there fore forgive her.
I tool liked that everyone was there for Callie at her trial.

I don't really understand... After the way the previous episode ended , all I wanted was to know if Bailey was sick and what was gonna happen to Mer and Cristina. Instead we got pulled into this...joke. Yes, it was a joke. Trying to justify Arizona's cheating by using a miscarriage ? REALLY ! Ridiculous ! Don't get me wrong, the case was great. Tragic but great. I also could tell that if Cris had a choice she woulda sided with her patient. I loved the fact that Mer was with Callie when she opened that letter. Her dad came back, and I too was surprised when he admitted he cheated on her mom. But that episode felt totally alien. It came out of nowhere ! Kinda. I'm glad Webber is out and about !

I completely forgot about Bailey with all the Callie stuff going on... thanks for the reminder! Hopefully, we find out what's up with Bailey in next week's episode.

I am not sure they were trying to explain the cheating by the miscarriage. Perhaps it contributed to a rift between them, but there were other signs from last season. I daresay you might be simplifying it a little.

I don't think I am simplifying anything. That is how this episode made things look for me.

Man. Arizona has been a real piece of work this season. How can an initially somewhat likable if not OK character become such an unlikeable numbskull is beyond me. Totally forgot about Bailey's illness. Thanks for the reminder. Bailey might be obsessed about surgery but she is headed for her second divorce if she's not down with some ridiculous disease.

I know right ! It would be so sad though if she got divorced...again. I love her with Ben ! so disease it is !
