The Vampire Diaries Review: Love Prevails?

by at .  Updated at . Comments

As Tom Hanks told Private Ryan after saving him oh so many years: earn it, Bonnie Bennett. You better earn this second chance at life.

Following a number of wayward Vampire Diaries Season 5 episodes - full of crazy plots twist, dopplegangers pouring out of Damon's ears and, okay, some really hilarious Silas lines - the show finally put one storyline to rest this week.

By putting three bodies in the ground.

Silas is dead. Amara is dead. Tessa is dead. And Bonnie is (sort of) alive. It took a long, meandering time to arrive at this place, with the latest run of episodes bogged down by side characters and crazily complicated backstories. So allow me to reiterte:

You best make this worth our while, Bonnie.

Tessa on TVD

If it's possible for an hour to feature a trio of deaths and one long-awaited resurrection, and yet conclude without feeling like much was really accomplished, The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 7 pulled it off well.

Because that really is all that went down this week: two characters killed themselves, one because she was sick of living and the other because she's crazy in love, and Stefan finally got his revenge against Silas.

Granted, it was definitely nice to get some insight into all Stefan went through while trapped in that safe and it was definitely moving when he admitted he wanted to see both Elena and Damon's faces when the door was finally. I complained in my review of The Vampire Diaries Season Episode 6 that the series has gotten away from character development, so I do need to note the focus here on Stefan's inner turmoil.

That said... those three are goners and Bonnie is now the anchor for The Other Side.

Someone could easily have not watched this installment, be informed of those facts and be instantly caught up, ready to view The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 8.

Which is okay I guess. Especially when Damon is making references to crazy island dwellers and their volleyball pals and Silas is lamenting the price of gas. At least as the storylines have become more convoluted, The Vampire Diaries quotes have become funnier. A lot funnier.

But I didn't feel anything when Silas was saying goodbye to Amara... or when Amara stabbed herself... or when Tessa took her own life. And I simply felt relief when Bonnie was brought back, not any kind of joy. Did anyone doubt this would actually take place? And, sorry, but does anyone really care about Bonnie?

I'll wait to reserve judgment on what the consequences of her feeling all supernatural deaths will be, but I can't say it's the most exciting cliffhanger. Nor is Stefan collapsing due to his memories of being submerged in water for three months.

So let's not call this episode filler. Let's call it a house cleaning. The side characters that infused the series with some humor but who mostly overstayed their welcome are now gone. Bonnie is back. Stefan has regained his memories. Let's shift focus, shall we, Julie Plec?

Dr. Maxfield is involved in some intriguing stuff at Whitmore. And let's not forget that there's an entire person inside Matt. Those storylines have potential. Let's hone in on them and leave this Other Side mumbo jumbo alone for awhile.

What did everyone think of "Death and the Maiden?" Were you affected by any deaths? Did you shed any tears over Bonnie hugging Caroline and Elena? And a sitcom based around Damon's home life? Sold! What should it be titled?

I agree with all the comments regarding ian being the most popular actor in the series. The delena storyline has kept viewers holding on for seasons, and now I am suffering the absence of displays of love between Damon and elena. I know ian and nina are broke up and I'm sure no one on set wants it to be awkward for then, but please refocus on the actor that makes us want more....ian somerhalder.

Matt, we get it, you care nothing for the Bonnie character. But you don't have to mention it in all your reviews.

It is sad that from all the CW network shows that I like. so far in this season only one show had been a good one, the rest of the shows had flooped this new season. So for now Arrow for me is the only worth to watch.

Wow I havent watched the episode yet but I understand what you all are saying about this season. The season so far had became a soap opera, the other side, bonnie, Silas,. Im tired of the other side already Idont know why the big fuzz on Bonnie death if we all knew she was coming back eventually. This season they are mistreating Caroline and Matt just to focus on the Elena/Damon/ Silas/Stephan/Tessa/Amara love story like if those characters are the on,y important in the show/. Matt has potential and he has been underused so far, Caroline had been kind of neglected as well. Tyler barely shows up as he is In the crossover with the Originals, so I wonder if he will return or not. Whatever happen with the good TVD of previous seasons?? That is lost completely. Something is off this season. the story lines are lame, there is no kind of action, or drama. I miss the Alaric days. I cant believe The Originals are way better than TVD now and I havnet watched the Originals but I have heard comments about. I guess Ian Somerhalder was right when he was not thrilled about The Originals as he felt key characters taken from TVD was going to have an impact on TVD and the show may had loose some essence. Boy was he right!! They need to get back on track with the stories now that The Other Side is gone, Tessa and AMara is gone and also Silas. We need to feel Damon and Elena are inded a couple with ups and downs, Stephan to find a new love interest with a shady past, add more Caroline and Matt to the episodes. Toss Katherine once in a while. Add new stories too but alwyas focusing on the vampires stories as the show si called TVD. I now miss Klaus, Elijah and family on TVD, they did add emotion to the show, now there is no emotion, lame stories and boring characters. If these things will continue like that TVD could be cancelled regardless if the show is in the 5th season.

Missing this episode is NOT okay. Missing it would mean not seeing thag amazing scene in which the three doppelgangers helped Tessa make the spell. Nina Dobrev did so great!

Sarah-silva

I really liked this episode.
I am just a little confused about 1 thing, is Bonnie Alive? Or is she not really alive? I know she is the anchor and can see living and dead people, which will be neat and then she will feel the pain as people cross over to the other side. I just am not sure if she is 100% alive.
Nina did a great job of playing Amara and I thought she was crazy until it was revealed she was seeing people on the other side so she was not crazy.
Lots of death this episode, Amara, Silas and Tessa.
I too am enjoying the humor and Damon had some great lines as always and so did Silas.
No Matt again! Hope we see him soon.

This show is beyond boring now. Two actors are playing 75% of the roles and it has become a comical parody of the series it once was. The draw of the show, Damon, is a bit player they are abusing and ignoring in the storyline. Don't the constant polls and award shows clearly send the message that there is a favorite actor/character here? He is pretty much nowhere to be found in this show anymore. What a waste of an interesting intriguing character who is now 2-dimensional and used as an occasional prop. There were so many excellent ways the Elena/Damon relationship could have been depicted with darkness and delight. This must be personal within the structure of the hierarchy of the show. What possible reason could they have to thumb their noses at the popularity of this character and the actor himself? His charisma and popularity have been the driving force of the show. The only saving grace beginning in the season four realm. And...what? They ignore that fact and fans are dropping off this new unrecognizable uninspired TVD like flies. There were 19 in my group and we are down to 3. I'm soon to bail too. The new season has just been bleak, bland, and embarrassing. Bad form.

@ Lori

Agree with u Lori. The show had become bland, exciteless and boring. Ian told in interviews that this season was similar to Season 1. Well. I dont see where cause I havent seen any resemblance to S1. S1 was much better. I like the show so far cause of Damon as I like his character and his funny side to even the darkest moments and I think he has potential but Im tired of the other side story, Tessa Silas and Amara the that love triangle (im glad that is over). So now that all the characters are back into place, lets focus on that and have new stories they will be involved, even with the Dr, Max,some news stories can develop, like this secret society. Jeremy life as a hunter can be also be developed, I havent seen Jermy acting really as a hunter, where is all that? What about Matt story, Caroline story.? It looks like the writers do not have a story for Matt anymore so he is been skipping episodes. I mean the show named is The Vampire Diaries Im sure the writers can come up with new stories related to vampires that can involve all the characters, including Tyler who has been absent from the show lately.

Cant wait to see who the next villian will be.

I thought this ep was very good. It kept me glued to the tv. I love Bonnie and I'm so glad she's back in rotation. I hope she gets more interesting stories now. The whole cast is great. Nina Dobrev is very impressive with her ability to portray so many different characters simultaneously.

luckily they have Damon in the show or else i would have lost interest, I think they need to add more excitement and danger to Elena's and Damon's relationship and have more excitement because now its just too much drama and crying.

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 7 Quotes

Elena: We have a situation.
Damon: Of the Doppleganger variety.

Guys, we were both immoral. And now we're not. Hello?!?
