The Vampire Diaries Review: Devil of a Time

by at .  Updated at . Comments

If Kat has lived nine lives in her 500 years of being on the run, The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 12 definitely represented my favorite one.

I've been critical of this character for seasons now, calling the writers out on many occasions for making Katherine nothing but a plot device, someone to randomly show up from time to time in order to move the story in some direction.

But when she actually is the plot? When she's insulting Elena's hair and showing a vulnerable side to Stefan and ratting out Caroline's scandalous sexcapades on The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 11 and wondering how anyone could love Bonnie?

Yeah. I'm all aboard the Katherine train now. It was a really fun ride this week.

Cold, manipulative, good hair. You really are my daughter.

Cold, manipulative, good hair. You really are my daughter.

Katherine [to Nadia]
Cold, manipulative, good hair. You really are my daughter.

The installment was titled "The Devil on the Inside," presumably because Damon's monster came out to play with Enzo by hour's end.

But the entire episode was about characters trying to pretend they are someone they're not, trying to see themselves in the best light.

Damon is the obvious example. He's someone who believes he's at his best when he's with Elena and someone who finally realized this week how insulting it actually is to her to think he could poison her with his darkness.

But Elena Katherine gave Damon a perfect response to his little speech outside the party. Yes, she broke his heart. And, yes, she walked away smirking because that was her intention. But wasn't she also correct? Doesn't Damon need to be a good person on his own before he thrusts the pressure on Elena to make sure he remains that way?

It's like they always say: you need to love yourself before anyone else can really love you. In Damon's case, however, the problem is that he does seem to love himself... when he's embracing his own inner Ripper-ness.

Seriously. Some of us eat entire pints of ice cream or listen to sad mix tapes when we get dumped. Damon commits homicide. The guy's got issues and it shouldn't be on Elena (even if it was Katherine pretending to be Elena) to fix them.

Elsewhere, Caroline didn't want to think she was the person who would actually get slammed against a tree in a passionate lovemaking session sleep with Klaus. She scoffed at the "Prudy Trudy" nickname, but she likely preferred it over what Tyler was thinking and essentially said with his bared teeth: Hybrid Ho.

Leave it to Stefan to swoop in, deliver a winning line ("Drunk or not, she doesn't deserve that.") and later hit all the right notes when comforting Caroline.

Should these two just get together already? Vote now:

Tyler, of course, was also pretending from the moment he returned to Mystic Falls.

He wanted to leave his stint on The Originals behind, to toast to a new beginning at home. But it was a nice moment toward the end when he confided in Matt just how terrible things were for him in New Orleans - and how they've only grown worse.

Indeed, nearly every character was forced to face a truth about him or herself this week. Some came out of it better and stronger (Caroline was able to accept her Klaus-tastrophe and realize it didn't make her a bad person), while others just came out of it bloodier and more of a savage.

We're sort of seen this with Damon before, but Enzo makes the storyline feel fresh enough. He's been a winning addition so far.

Small Bites:

  • It's worth repeating: The Vampire Diaries Season 5 spent weeks and weeks saving the life of Bonnie, only to essentially ignore her since. Couldn't they just have killed her off?
  • My goodness. Matt has A LOT of friends. Did you see the turn out at that party?!? He must mix a mean drink at The Grill.
  • On an acting level, it was a lot of fun to watch Nina Dobrev toggle between Elena and Katherine.
  • Caroline Forbes should never not be cleaning. Especially in that tanktop.
  • Elena and Damon. Damon and Elena. I know there's a nickname in there somewhere. Best TVD line ever?

What did everyone else think? Check out this teaser for The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 13 and sound off now:

I know that with kathrine killing Mia it allowed the show to let Elena come back it's just a matter of time I do wish that the change was permanent though but sadly they couldn't get the courage to make such a permanent change :( sorry but I really hate how they made Elena fall in love with Damon after she reinsured Stephen over and over and over how much she loved him and would never do that and especially after everything damon put everyone through including her they toasted to Katharine's death blaming every awful thing that's happened on her but let's be honest Damon is ten times worse then kathrine and no one on the show is innocent they have ALL done terrible things but because there friend and love each other all there things they have done are swept under the rug and forgotten
Damon came into town compelled Caroline to allow him to sleep with her and use and abuse her until he was done with her (sounds like rape to me )then he killed the football coach just to prove something to Stephen, killed his nephew who lived at the boarding house, snapped Jeremy's kneck, killed Alaric, tried to kill vikki twice and when she just wouldn't die again he compelled her to sleep with him and allow him to feed on her because he was board because Stephen stole his daylight ring ( rape again) then snapped her kneck when he was done with her and sent her to Jeremy and Elena's house knowing she couldn't control her thurst hoping she killed them both which all lead to her death ,killed 12 innocent people to selfishly break a sire bound on Charlotte when that didn't work left her to count 100000s of bricks for 100s of years,he made Elena shut her humanity off even after Stephen told it it was a horrible idea it would ruin her so every awful thing she did was his fault, killed and turned Bonnie's mom into a vampire killed the intire
Whitmore family who were innocent people, killed and torchered mason causing Caroline to be kidnapped and torchered, and for Elena to just forget about every horrible thing he has done was the stupidest thing they have done on this show

Wow..i could not agree more. It was so stupid of the writers to make it seem like this big buildup for Stephen and Elena, true love, epic love blah blah blah. Only to have her ride his brother in the same house 1-2 seasons later. Seriously wtf

Personally I can only take Katherine in small doses. I do not like her whole mean girl persona either.
I really like Elena and I hope that Katherine's body did not burn to ash and that there is a way before the season ends that they can get Elena back in her body and be rid of Katherine.
I felt bad for Caroline and Tyler's reaction to her sleeping with Klaus, I mean all that Klaus did to Tyler I can see his anger BUT Tyler chose to leave a few episodes back and it broke Caroline's heart. She was not with Tyler and when she slept with Klaus as far as she knew Tyler would never be back.
I did love Stefan comforting Caroline.
I too felt bad for Damon, when Katherine/Elena said what she said to him. Now he is back to season one uncaring, hell raising Damon with Enzo as his side kick.
I have never really thought Matt was that good looking but he was looking super hot this episode for some reason.

my favorite part was katherine exposing the caroline/klaus thing so tyler would know. caroline being a blabber mouth has annoyed me to no end. but the shoe is on the other foot/turn about is fair play...it was past time for this to happen!

The 5-year itch anyone?

Great Review! This episode was good and entertaining. I am Glad that Kat is on control now, she the one that make the show at best. Elena is not dead cause Bonnie would seen her trying to pass tru her right? so let see how that is going to play out.

We've sort of seen this before with Damon?!! Um...WE HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE WITH DAMON. IT's get SOOO old!
I have a feeling that Stefan is going to reject Katherine/Elena. I for one am glad to see Elena gone for a while. She is beyond annoying.
I get Tyler's anger and I think he's more than justified. I also think that Stefan didn't have a reason to punch him. I'm sorry but she just slept with the guy that murdered his mother. As much as teen viewers want to dismiss this (just cause Klaus is hot), this matters.

I agree. I had no problem with Stefan supporting Caroline at the end, but I thought he crossed the line by hitting Tyler, when Tyler had every right to be angry. And I say this as someone who would be happy to see Caroline and Stefan together. They're very well suited, but I still don't like the way Tyler was treated. I think he's been through enough and deserves better.

Her sleeping with him is none of his concern he abandoned her he lost that right

You literally have to be a little teeny bopper Klaroline fan because if you really did understand the definition of opinion then you wouldn't call me ignorant for having one. Klaus, which is spelled with a K BTW, and Caroline have obvious chemistry which is fine but sleeping with him? Wtf. You clearly said "It does get annoying to hear everyone making excuses for every character they favor and as long as they like that person everything is swept under the rug" yet that is EXACTLY what you are doing with Klaus and Caroline. On top of that i love how everyone is so quick to defend that trash klaroline sex when even Stefan had a wtf look and Caroline, HERSELF, is ashamed. Tell me if it wasn't "wrong" why would she feel so condemned/guilty/ashamed. She KNEW Tyler would be upset. Tbh, Caroline has more humanity and morality than YOU because even SHE recognizes what she did. I don't blame Caroline for doing what she did, her and Klaus have amazing chemistry but that doesn't change the fact that what she did hurt someone she cares about and he has every right to care.

@ anon

No your ignorant for the statements your making your argument has no ground I have wrote over and over it was wrong and horrible and she should have had more respect for herself, friends and ex but that doesn't change the fact that her sex life is none of Tyler's business any more and you really need to read carefully because you truly do look stupid arguing a point that someone has agreed with lmao I haven't swept anything under the rug wrong is wrong lmao(grow up)

Avatar
@ Amber+

You sound so disgusting to actually say that its ok for someone's ex to sleep with the murderer of their mother. I mean what? Are you like a 13 year old klaroline teeny bopper? Seriously this doesn't need an explanation.

Avatar
@ anon

I feel that he has lost his right to comment on anything concerning her life and you are ignorant to think other wise like I stated earlier she should not have done what she did and yes she should have had more respect for herself ,her ex and her friends claus has done so many horrible things but It does get annoying to hear everyone making excuses for every character they favor and as long as they like that person everything is swept under the rug and then other times they want to crucify others for the same thing Tyler does seem like he is so far one of the better characters out of all of the group but that don't change that when he dumped her her sex life became off limits yes none of his business but not only did he leave her what did he expect to happen when he has used Caroline not only one time by time and time again to distract klaus for some reason or another he knew Claus was in love with her knew he was trying to steal her he had her flirt with him and go out on dates and talk with with to BOND with him .
And has far as my age I'm at least old enough to understand the definition of opinion obviously your not

Avatar
@ Amber+

He didn't abandon her. He left because she gave him an ultimatum and didn't support his vendetta against Klaus. Klaus was the reason, they weren't together, so for Caroline to turn around and sleep with Klaus, was just disgusting on so many levels. Sorry, Tyler has a right to be upset. They may have broken up, but he and Caroline have a very strong history together and technically speaking, she was the only person left in his life that he truly cared about.

Avatar
@ Frances

I agree it's gross that she slept with klaus in no way am I saying other wise but I am saying in truth he has no opinion on who she jumps into bed with and he lost that right when he walked out on her he has no say he left her anyway you want to look at it she begged him to stay and he walked out ultimatum or not she was tired of being alone and being second on his list of priorities he left for revenge on klaus for killing his mother 100% justified but what about the time he left with jewels with out saying good bye to her or when he took off to un sire the werewolfs that was all before klaus killed his mother why did he abandon her the other times why was she second on his priorities then? I'm just saying you walk out on someone you loose the right to say anything about who they are or are not sleeping with

Avatar
@ Amber+

There isn't really a "right" when your ex sleeps with the person who murdered your mom....if it was someone else sure he has no right but that was his mom's murderer. Completely different.

Avatar
@ anon

But no she should have had more respect for Tyler and her friends for all the hurt he has caused everyone but apparently no one is held accountable for there actions so what makes this any different?

@ anon

Pay backs a bitch maybe he shouldnt have started a war he couldn't win

I liked this episode very much and the change is great, fresh and hopefully permanent:) Damon was bad on Elena and let's face it ... that part of the story about Delena was terrible, the whole show went down the road. Katherina said complete truth to him.

Oh yeah! There is a reason why everybody loves seasons 1 and 2 and rating went down since the 3rd one. Stefan and Elena are the real couple

100% agree

Julie Plec must have some weird infatuation on Ian Somerhalder and live through Elena's character, therefore and against all chracter logic, she decided to make her an idiot who "fell in love" with the worst character in the show, someone who once even tried to kill Elena's brother, someone who consistently proves to be just a garbage can. This show would be glorious again if they managed to really GET RID OF ELENA. Her character was the center of the show at the beginning, and then she became some sort of inmoral slut. I still remember how the show betrayed its premise that "all the characteristics of a person get hightened when they become a vampire": Damon was a dick, and he is an even bigger dick as a vampire Stephan is a good guy with some issues, so he is a good guy with some blood thirst issues as a vampire Elena was a great gal, and as a vampire she lost her moral compass and became a slut? ELENA: who saved her life twice, who offered to die in the place of Jenna? Who has loved her no matter what and bring out the best of her? STEPHAN I only watch this show because of Klaroline and Katherine.

@ A

I agree 110%

Avatar

I think you could say the same about her infatuation for Joseph Morgan. For everything bad that Damon has done, Klaus has done much worse. The difference is that Damon has no problem owning up to the fact that he's not a good person. Klaus lives in a deluded fantasy where he thinks everyone should love him despite all of the horrible things he does.

Avatar
@ Frances

Klaus is just a psycho, and we all love him for that, he has a show becase TO is just really good, because the original family is a great mess, because the storytelling htey allow is insane and that is delicious. I mean, if you were an all powerful inmortal dude who has been around for over a thousand years, how many cats do you think will be running around your head? Did you forget all the crap that went down in the mithology of the original family? Now THAT is trauma. Damon is just a pathetic asshole, he is bad for the sake of being bad, he has no powerful trauma behind. Oh, poor Damon, he is a freak because he is a vampire? He is a freak because he always falls in love with his bother's girl? He is mad at the world because he got to live an inmortal life because his brother didn;t want him to die? Fuck off, HE IS JUST AN ASSHOLE, no excuses, no explanation beyond that. And why do the Delena fans like him? Same reason Julie Plec likes him adn gives his character privileges: the actor looks good, they are all living through Elena's character.

Spindae-2o

I can't wait for Katherine to get jealous over Caroline and probably try to kill her over it. I really think that this new Markus character will be Nadia's dad.

I love how there's not a word about elena in this review.. I mean where did she go? but well, works for me. the episode was incredibly fun to watch. a lot of katherine, almost no elena, hinted klaroline... perfect!

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 12 Quotes

You are literally the best person I've ever known. And for me to think I could ever change you was giving me way too much credit and you way not enough… you're the good. And I need a little good in my life.

Damon [to Elena]

Stefan: Define "out."
Damon: One who hovers and sticks his nose in other people's business. Wait... I was defining "annoying."
