Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Review: All Aboard The Rashomon Express

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Over the last handful of episodes, Agents of SHIELD has really hit a great story telling stride.

This week only picked up speed as we got to see how the team worked in smaller groups when a mission goes south.

Right from the beginning, the use of the Italian announcer as the starting point for each of the different views around the same event has made Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 Episode 13  my favorite hour to date.

Okay, Stan Lee's appearance helped. But, come on - its Stan-freaking-Lee! How could you not love his cameo!

Beyond my fanboy crush on Mr. Lee, watching Coulson and Ward struggle to work the holotable while trying to mimic the motions that Fitz normally does had me and my wife giggle pretty hard.

Did anyone else notice Simmons throw herself on a grenade for Skye and Fitz? Given that she had no idea that it wasn’t deadly when she did it, I'm pretty sure that makes her the most heroic nerd out there. Of course, waking up and nearly shooting Coulson in the face reminded us she’s not a field agent.

There were two really big shockers in this episode; the most unexpected was the reveal that Mike Peterson is becoming Deathlok!

While this was announced last week, I was lucky enough to have avoided it being spoiled. And the main reason this is a surprise is because in the comic universe Deathlok’s last name was Collins - not Peterson - so I hadn’t even considered the idea for our Mike.

Looks like Mike may yet get a chance to do the right thing and be a hero after all.

Of course, the biggest shocker of the night was Ian Quinn shooting Sky (twice!) and leaving her to die in the basement.

While I’m hopeful that she will pull through since the team found her, any long term Joss Whedon fan (which I am) knows that even his most beloved character can be killed off in the name of good story telling (thinking of you, Wash).

What makes the entire event even worse is that Agents of SHIELD is taking another long break and is not returning for a month (March 4). Come on, ABC.

Overall, I’m giving this episode 4.8 held breaths in the hopes that Skye pulls through when the show comes back.

How do you think Skye will survive?

Just the mention of Wash brought tears to my eyes. Nothing could be more horrible than his death.

i thought he was blaming coulson because of the discussion he had with may earlier about how coulson has got skye focused on reaching ian quinn, and also i think he is jealous of coulson and may. i do love ward and may's pairing though. always felt skye and ward have a more older brother younger sister vibe.

I agree, he was blaming Coulson, not himself.

Wow. What an episode! I loved the scenes in which the most experienced Agents worked on their own and later on together again. Seeing Coulson, Ward and May doing what they do best gets me every time. Loved the fact Skye was shot. Don't get me wrong, though I always had problems with that character I don't want her to actually die! But this adds so much to Ian Quinn as a villain! I mean, how many villains have we seen in these last months and years who waste their time with talking, babbling about their master plans or trying to persuade someone that evil is better?!
And now Quinn - although it seemed he really didn't want to kill her, asking Mike in the first place and then gently holding Skye and having an almost tortured look on his face - doesn't waste time AT ALL and proves himself as a hands-on-villain. Great! Love bad guys like that! And even humour didn't come short. Ward and Coulson at the table, Ward's reaction to May's confession she told their boss about them, Simmons almost killing Coulson ... action, story and lighter moments worked perfectly together. P.S.: is it just me or seemed Ward a bit jealous when he walked in on Coulson patching up May?

I wondered if that was a little jealous we were seeing as well. Glad I wasn't the only one

skye and ward soulmates??? weird pairing.
also can anyone tell who ward was referring to when he says at the end that he is not blaming himself? so does he blame coulson or may?

Good question. Was asking myself the same thing. He could blame Fitz, of course, for letting Skye walk in alone. But I really can't see (yet) why he would be blaming May or Coulson.

pretty sure he was blaming Coulson... his reference at the opening about Coulson being different and whatever he said driving Skye kind of fills that in.

Skye is probably going to show us her 0-8-4ness next episode. And, when she wakes up, she can tell the team that Mike Peterson is still out there. Wasn't Quinn's expression a little odd when he remarked that he had his orders too, right after he shot Skye? Hmmm...

Why does it feel like ABC is actively trying to kill this show? It's finally starting to become the superhero extravaganza everyone apparently wants it to be (I'm a little apprehensive about that, but I seem to be in the minority). Its a standard move to not go head to head with the Olympics, but why has this mini-block been shown in such a staccato manner? Consistent scheduling may matter less with automated dvr viewing, but at some point the live numbers are just going to bottom out.

I agree with you 100% -- soo why take the last two weeks off just to take another 3 weeks off after 1 episode.. GAH.

Since Chloe keeps refering to Ward and Skye as soul mates I doubt she'll get killed off but damn if I'd miss her character. I don t know why but I just can t warm up to Skye.

I hear you. Soul mates? Sigh. I just do not feel any chemistry.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 Episode 13 Quotes

You’re the least supportive pretend girlfriend I've ever had.

Fitz

Ward: Really? You think Coulson will take that excuse if he finds out about us?
May: He took it ok when I told him.
Ward: Wait? You told him?
May: Yep.
