Last week, The Tomorrow People Season 1 Episode 12 placed two characters into a situation where they had to depend on each other to survive.

Dealing with life and death isn’t new to many of these folks, but it was the unique pairing in this particular situation that sent many of the fans into a happy frenzy: John and Astrid.

I got the chance to chat with Madeleine Mantock, who plays the very lovely Astrid, about that episode and she explained what it was like when she first saw the script:

"It was very exciting and daunting."

Mantock found out about one of the best moments from an unusual source.

"I kind of found out about it from everybody else. I got my first big spoiler from one of the catering ladies. She said, 'oh John gets shot and you sing to him.'"

Astrid and John’s poignant scenes marked a significant change in Astrid’s status within the group. No longer was she just Stephen’s innocent friend; suddenly she found herself being protected by the entire group. It was an opportunity that Mantock said made her feel "flattered and very grateful to the writers."

If fans weren’t thinking about it before the episode, it’s certain that many were contemplating the possibility of a John/Astrid romance after their scenes together. What does Mantock think of a possible romance?

"It’s really interesting because they don’t know each other," she said, adding: "There’s a lot of history with Astrid and Stephen, and John and Cara. and it might take something bigger to break those bonds."

Okay, so maybe there won’t be a romance any time soon, but don’t fret, there will still be plenty to see on The Tomorrow People Season 1 Episode 13.

"In the meantime, they are enjoying getting to know each other," Mantock said. "They have a couple of scenes in Episode 13. Astrid is trapped in the lair and is speaking to anybody she can to get herself out."

The events of Episode 12 will continue to affect Astrid for a while, according to Mantock, who said that she will appear again in Episode 15: "[Astrid] is kind of struggling with the trauma of what’s happened – can’t leave the house, doesn’t want to eat anything, having problems talking about what happened to her."

Who will be there to help her out? One guess: "And just by chance, John appears to save the day again," Mantock said.

The idea of taking things slow with John and Astrid (if that is indeed what ends up happening) appeals to Mantock. She explained that the two are "a different age, difference experience levels. They don’t actually know each other. I know some of the fans [want a kiss], but I think it's more interesting if we just let it play out and see what happens."

With Astrid going underground to stay with the other paranormals, does Mantock ever wish Astrid had super powers? Turns out not so much.

"I think if I had the option to have powers, I wouldn’t want them. I think partially because, as an actor, I see them teleporting and I would just be rubbish at it. And in terms of the story, I quite like it that I feel like I’m coming at it more from the perspective that the audience does. I feel like I understand where they're coming from because I’m looking in from the outside and I happen to be in a position where I get to know about this world, when really I shouldn’t, which I think is quite interesting."

"I prefer to stay human if I can," Mantock added.
