The Vampire Diaries Review: Bitter Party

at .  Updated at . Comments

Recycling is great for the earth, but storylines and ratings? Eh, not so much.

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 13 brought us a lot of what we've already seen before. Will it continue to be enough to keep viewers enticed? You decide.

Caroline, bless her non-beating heart, gets an idea in her head and goes after it with every fiber of her being. If you are Caroline Forbes' friend that means you are going along for the ride. After the epically awkward moment in The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 12 when Tyler found out she slept with Klaus, Caroline is done with men...for now.

Enter the "Bitter Party," a dance for singles to purge the memories of their exes and move on with other heartbroken souls. Since Katherine is adoring her new life as Elena, she has a hard time pretending she's all that upset about Damon.

But when she sold it to Stefan that being with Damon had changed her and she wasn't sure if she liked that person anymore, it actually kind of worked.

Do you like who I am or do you miss who I was?

Katherine [to Stefan]

The thing is, Stefan is just genuinely worried about his brother going off the deep end. He's seen it before and he's seen how much better Damon was when he was with Elena. That's what made him get over his jealousy of them being together.

Deep down the Salvatore brothers love each other and would do anything for each other. It just seems like they are perpetually saving each other each time one of them goes off the rails.

Also, honestly how many times has Jeremy been kidnapped and killed. Bonnie's whole desperate plea had me rolling my eyes like Katherine. This again? Can't they find a more creative way to get what they want?

It's like Jeremy's whole purpose on this show is to be kidnapped and used for leverage...or show his abs. The only amusing part of that whole scene was Damon's quip that if Elena killed him, he would start a baseball team with her dopplegangers on the other side.

This whole story is just a variation of something we've seen before. Caroline gets an idea in her head and tries to control everyone and everything.

One of the Salvatore brothers has a meltdown and goes on a killing spree while the other runs to Elena for help. Bonnie is dragged into it as the resident witch, and Jeremy's presence is used when Bonnie is feeling stubborn. Am I right? Also didn't they also use the song "Say Something" like three episodes ago?

Does Damon even want to be saved this time? Or is Stefan right?

I mean I've seen Damon at his worst Caroline and I actually think he enjoys the way it makes him feel. It's like the more pain he can cause, the more reasons there are for people to hate him. He wants to confirm everyone's lowest expectations of him.

Stefan called his brother predictable at the beginning of the episode, but there was one twist we didn't see coming. Wes has travelers on his side and now he's turned Damon into one of his vampires who feeds on other vampires. Even Enzo knows that this is bad...really bad.

For me, the most interesting part of the episode was that Tyler made himself useful and figured out that Nadia was incredibly shady. After warning Matt and getting his neck snapped, Tyler's part in the storyline was pretty much done.

But Matt, ol' Matty boy Donovan, he figured it out. He knows that Katherine took over Elena's body. I have to give props to our favorite Mystic Grill bartender for figuring it out first. The only question is, what can he do with that information?

First of all, J. Plec should just quit this show and concentrate on the love triangle (or is it pentagon?) she is doing on The Originals. Get a new show runner! Back to the story, its good that Matt and Tyler made us feel like they are still actually part of the main cast. And I think Matt should now go to college coz ot looks like his brain is the only thing working on this show. :D And I agree to one comment about Kat passing through Bonbon. Bonnie should not even have seen Kat if shes not supernatural. She's still a doppleganger. Are they going for Steroline now?

I love that Damon is back to being Damon (although next week looks like a whole new level of crazy). All these Delena shippers pissed off because "he's not like that" ahahahaaaa. Yes, he is. They're vampires. Even Stefan is messed up but he's never killed the brother of his girlfriend/ex but he's done some pretty crazy stuff too. Damon is pure evil or at least he was from the get go and I didn't mind that Damon. It was a nice contrasting character to have on the show. You never knew what the hell he would do. Was he going to help them or was he going to stuff up their plan by doing whatever the hell Damon wanted to do. And his sass was amazing. I'm so confused by Delena shippers who solely love Damon and will swear black and blue against anything he does wrong but then in the same breath hate on Elena. I liked Stefan and Elena together but once Damon was on the scene eh... that was over. Now, I'm with others. No more vampire brothers for Elena - it's weird and not working for the show. The show seems to have sort of run its course with the ships. The only clean break would be for Elena to end up with Matt and live out her life if she somehow became human again. Regardless, I thought this episode was the best of the season. Katherine in Elena's body is hilarious.

People are hating on Damon but seriously in this "murder spree" of his he's technically killed two people. And before someone starts talking morals this is a VAMPIRE show. This isn't a fairy tale with sparkling vamps. Vampires feed off of blood. Their gut instinct is to kill. So I don't get why people get so upset when a vamp kills? Yes, some wish to live as humanly as possible but it's also perfectly okay for a vampire to like being a vampire. More importantly, just like the characters, the audience picks and chooses whose lives are worth caring about. I'm pretty sure most people didn't blink an eye when Caroline murdered all those witches or when Stefan and Damon were murdering hybrids. Supernatural murders don't get much consideration which I find odd because out main characters are supernatural and people get pissed when they are trying to be killed. But why should any of their deaths matter when it only seems the human murders are worth mentioning? In that case Matt's the only one with a true clean conscience who deserves to live

@ Arbor

Their gut instinct isn't to kill. Please stop defending that pyschopath, it just makes you look like one.

@ anon

I guess the part where it's a VAMPIRE show missed your attention. And liking the character on a TV SHOW doesn't make me a psycho lol. I'm just saying none of them are better than the other. Practically every character has blood on his/her hands. But if it bothers you maybe a vampire centered show isn't the right entertainment for you

@ Arbor

Lmao 100% agree

@ Arbor

There was no reply button for Anon below but stooooop. Anon you do sound like a crazy fan. I'm sorry. I'm with Arbor on this. Breathe, young one. Breathe.

@ Arbor

It being a vampire show has nothing to do with a vampire's "true instinct". You're defending a psychopath which just makes you look ridiculous. Liking a character is one thing, but the way Damon treated Jeremy and everyone else on that episode was complete bull.

What really bothered me in this episode is how overacted bad Damon was. Didn't any of the writers watch season 1? Bad Damon was so much more natural, just going with the flow and creating problems. That was fun to watch. Bad Damon season 1 would ask Bonnie for help, seductively, and only if she refused to colaborate he would threat Jeremy. Damon season 1 always claimed to not feel, but for me he was the one who felt the most, to me was the one who looked more human and that's why I love him. So for the writers to just make him a cold character it doesn't make any sense. PLEASE JUST FIX IT.

okay so do you think a 500 plus year old vampire is stronger than a hybrid ? for some reason I think a hybrid would be a little bit stronger. I'm talking about how easily Nadia took down Tyler btw.

@ ilk_vomit

Well tbh they have plot holes all over the place especially when it comes to "the older they are, the stronger they are" cause Damon shouldn't have been able to throw Nadia around in the previous episode either. And I do think Hybrids are infact supposed to be stronger. Or how about Enzo being in the Salvatore Mansion when he didn't an invite from Elena since she is the owner. See what I mean? Plot holes everywhere.

@ anon

What are you even talking about ? There are no plot holes in the examples you just gave that house no longer belongs to Elena she died she's a vampire.yes meaning NO vampire needs to be invited in

finally!!! someone who really thinks !!!!
Julie & Co destroyed Damon`s characther in 5 ep after they have ,,shaped,, over 4 season on the ideea that everyone cant change, became a better person when meets the true love. Damon has change, evolved over the 4 season, learn to be human but in the same time to accept the dark side of his. I really do not think (like in real life) a person after reaching to have his true love and reaching to HAVE and CARE about family and friends, after he BOND and SAVE soooooo many times OVER and OVER AGAIN EVERYONE in this journey IN THE SAME TIME TO DO AND HIDE doings like killing people !!! I dont bite that!!! It`s not REAL, not sustainable !!! and then RIGHT IN THE MOMENT when his true love reject him Damon became the characther from the beginning, even worse !
I (like a person, not like a tv shhiper) trully belive that the sweet love it`s one BUT the TRUE LOVE it`s the love who deeply, trully change a person inside. And I think Damon has changed and ONLY for the rating Julie & Co have plot Damon in this way BUT they did this badly
I understand even the plot Kat/Elena changing the body BUT I dont bite the fact that nobody realized that ... not even Caroline (the most cerebral character on the show) IN THAT MOMENT with the secret hear by Tyler because of Elena !!!
I think when you have realtionships like in this show, with all the close persons around .... like a big family .... you get to feel the person next to you not only to intreact !!! Again it not real, sustainable
For me this show is done ... beacause it became too commerciale and unreal ! sorry, really sorry!
sorry for my English but I am from Europe and it`s not my natural language

Okay, why would the idiot Matt let Nadia know he knows about how Katherine is using Elena's body? Why wouldn't he be smart about it, walk away, then tell his suspicions to the gang. Oh right, because TVD has to drag on their storylines forever because of the abysmal writing. On Breaking Bad, Walt found out that Hank knew about Heisenberg and confronted him in one episode. This? What actually happened, to be fair I'm not even done watching the episode it's so painful.

@ AmyGirl

It is really a piece of rock in my butt. It is killing me! Each time I get more and more bored of TVD. The only reason I am watching it is because Ian is there.

This episode was lower than my expectations ,I really thought that they are going to use Bonnie to find out about Katherine or why else made her an anchor if you are not going to use that ,they can just leave her a witch at least . But it's ok if Bonnie didn't find out because Matt did and I really hope that he be the one who expose Katherine ,(I feel like I want more of Matt Donovan this season ). It was really fun to watch Katherine pretending to be Elena especially when she told Nadia about Jeremy and if she just let him die,she was hilarious .
And I want to know what exactly the travelers want ,they just keep showing every where.

I liked most of the episode except the whole Katherine trying to hook up with Stephan while being in Elena's body. BTW Enzo is hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the show and don't really jump to complaining about it a whole lot, but the HUGE plot hole of Bonnie not feeling Katherine pass through her seriously bugs me. She would have known immediately! And like others have mentioned before, she talks to people on the other side. Rick, Jenna, SOMEONE would tell her that Elena isn't actually Elena... I would at least like some sort of convoluted explanation for this? Though I don't believe there's any that would make sense. With that being said, I hate Katherine taking over Elena's body. She should have just been dead already. I don't really get everyone's issues with Elena. She's the core of the show. I don't enjoy it without her. Bad Damon can be funny, but I'm over it. He would have never done that to Jeremy unless he completely turned his emotions off. But he hasn't admitted to that yet and it doesn't seem like he has. This is just way too out of character for him. So I'm hoping Elena will be back in her body ASAP and she can tell him the truth. Though I'm sure she won't forgive him just so we can drag this out even longer. But here's to hoping!

@ Amy Lynn

Katherine died as human. Humans don't go to the Other Side, only supernatural creatures do. That explains that even is Katherine died, she wouldn't have to go through Bonnie, so Bonnie wouldn't know if Kat is alive or dead.

@ Orlenok

but Katherine is still a doppelgänger which make her kinda sorta supernatural and in 5x11 when her heart stopped for a moment Bonnie saw her, so I guess if she would really die she should pass through Bonnie

@ Amy Lynn

Everything you said about Bonnie and the anchor thing is dead on right. It's ridiculous.
Also I'm a little sad how Damon turned on Jeremy like that. They we're becoming so close and Damon really cared for him but I guess it was all for Elena. It was still heartbreaking to see the change in Jeremy's face when he realized Damon was a dick again.
(Side note...Kat Graham looks amazing. I love her hair. She's beautiful). But once again Bonnie is only relevant when magic is needed. And since she can't do magic she is forced to hijack some poor classmate to do magic for her. Ugh

I happen to like my old sadistic self?

So Elena breaks up with you and your first instinct is to go on a killing spree. Could you be any more predictable?
