The Vampire Diaries Review: Oh, Hell

at .  Updated at . Comments

Let's get this out of the way up front:

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 has run out of new stories to tell.

There was very little plot to the latest installment, with the entire hour dedicated to luring Katherine to the Salvatore mansion in order to kill her. Once and for all. Seriously. For good this time. They mean it.

And while the ending was unexpected and beautifully executed (more on that in, like, half a minute), where did it leave us?

With Katherine dead (a storyline point that's been teased to, well, death for years now) and with Elena injected with the Ripper Virus, meaning we now get to see her act like Damon has been acting (times werewolf) and now will witness yet another character deal with some sort of odd transformation.

There was Matt with Gregor inside him... Stefan struggling with PTSD... Damon going all Ripper... Katherine being Elena... this season has been a constant loop of characters acting out of character for one reason or another.

We're in desperate need of a new twist here, of raised stakes, of a new villain. You can't come quickly enough, Markos!

(Quick nit to pick: Wouldn't Bonnie have known Katherine was never really dead because she never passed through her? This is clearly why the writers kept Bonnie away for so many weeks... but wouldn't her friends have expected her to go running to them with a high-five or something once Kat went to The Other Side? Wouldn't they have checked with her to make sure Kat was a goner?)

Okay. Sorry. The general complaining portion of this review is now over and we can focus on this episode purely for what it was... because it was extremely well done.

We got to hang out with our favorite heroes and heroines and listen to them playfully banter with each other (don't worry, Katherine used a calculator) and not-so-playfully taunt each other (You're a joke, Damon/Says the guy pining for the girl who slept with Klaus.)

The Katherine-Nadia farewell was touching, perfectly acted and expertly made viewers feel sympathy for the vampire who was about to finally die.

And Katherine's goodbye to everyone? What is there to even say?!?

  • Matty Blue Eyes is the "best night she never had."
  • Bonnie, she'll see on the "flip side."
  • She really did make Caroline better by turning her.
  • Damon will see her in Hell.

And apparently he really will.

It was a bit strange and a bit forced to have her talk to Bonnie before departing (is this what happens to all supernaturals? We know they pass through Bonnie, but they can just dilly and dally and chatter away until then?), but then it was a bit AWESOME to see her sucked away.

Producer Caroline Dries has confirmed that Katherine was taken to a "dark" place and that she isn't coming back.

It's a bold move, considering how TVD focused so much on Katherine over the past several episode, seemingly trying to redeem her.

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 15 made it clear: not even all the snark in the world can save a lying, manipulating murderer who will do anything to survive. It can't save her from an eventual death - or from a very dark, permanent fate.

Heed that lesson, readers, and, in closing, heed this one, Caroline: You made some decent points in your speech and all. But saying you made a mistake merely "weeks" ago - especially when that mistake entails scorching hot forest sex with the hybrid who killed your ex's mother - isn't exactly a strong defense.

So... what did everyone else think of this outing? Are you shocked Katherine is actually gone? Happy? Relieved? In stunned silence over how it went down?

Are you glad Katherine is dead?

We have two weeks now to let it sit in and, in the meantime, check out this promo for The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 16:

I really hate the way katherine died I'm a big stefan /katherine fan there was so much potential , with her helping him and they were getting closer, also she didn't deserve to go to the dark side or whatever she could of been at peace with nadia at least. I still hope she will return I know that is highy impossible but can't blame a girl for trying and please no stefan/elena both people deserve better than that, I'm not sure if I should watch anymore tvd with kat gone

I am so mad at the writers. One, they killed off the one person who is making me still watch this show. Two, I didn't even know what happened to her until I came here. And three, you just can't kill Katherine freaking Pierce. The Nadia Katherine scene broke my heart. I was so looking forward to them reunited on the other side. But like my Klaroline heart, it was broken again by the stupid dark side thing. (Seriously, is this star wars???) I really hope Enzo returns because right now, he's my anchor for staying to watch this. (Pun intended)

Drea xoxo

without katerina i see no point in watching!!! in my version of TVD, katerina and elijah are finally together and elena the one that died

maybe ketsia does not want amaras doppleganger on the otherside wih silas?

Terrible episode, sadly Im losing interest each time I watch this show. The story lines are boring and predictive.

Katherine was human when they thought she'd died so she wouldn't have passed through bonnie.

@ Leanne

She was a doppelgänger and a traveler which still makes her a supernatural. So she should of passed throughy Bonnie.

@ Vampbarbie

Doppelgangers don't really have any demonstrable powers, though, and we've never had enough of 'em for case studies... jury's still out on whether or not they count as supernatural for the purposes of The Other Side(tm). (It really needs a better name... how 'bout Limbo?)

@ JK

Actually they've said on the show that dopplegangers are supernatural. Actually if you google dopplegangers vampire diaries it explains why they are.

I hope we don´t get to see the gang helping Elena coming over this urge to feed on vampires more than we have gotten to see Stefan helping Damon. That would really upset me. It´s enough that Elena got the vrius also. I was kind of looking forward to a Damon - and only Damon - storyline where he was affected by the virus, but no. Elena must of course have the more dangerous stuff and everyone are felling sorry for her (no, I don´t like Elena after she became a vampire or togheter with Damon, in my eyes Damon is tipping on toes around her - it makes his charchter not him- so i really hope Elena gets cured (if there is a cure Damon will force Stefan or someone else to give it to Elena...) so we can get a more awesome storyline with Damon!

The way they ended the Katherine story line made no sense. First of all, I know Katherine did some very bad things, and probably deserved to go to a 'dark side' or whatever it is being called, but so did a LOT of other vampires and characters on the show. Every single vampire that passed through the anchor to the other side probably killed at least one person, Ketsia manipulated people and spent her whole life out for vengeance against Silas and she still passed through, so why didn't Katherine? It makes no sense. Furthermore the writers claimed that they wanted to make sure that Katherine's death was final, as in she couldn't come back from the other side, but all they did was raise more suspicion about it. They have had characters be gone for good before, for example Anna and her mother found each other in the episode 'Ghost World' (season three) and then it showed them finding peace together, making it very clear they were gone. Neither Anna or her mother appeared in the show after that episode because it was obvious they had gone to another place. If they wanted Katherine gone for good they should have done a similar story with her finding Nadia on the other side, then she would be gone for good just like Anna. By having her dragged off to a dark place that nobody knows about they have left her character open rather then shut her off. They are clearly just trying to keep her character somewhere they could get it back from incase they run out of stories, because they had never mentioned a dark side before they can turn it in to whatever they want in the long run and make a new storyline out of it.

@ Guest

I totally agree! When I saw her getting taken away to the dark side and Bonnie said she didn't know what was going on. I was like not one supernatural went to the dark place other then Katherine!

I don't understand why they didn't realize katherine wasn't dead if the last time she "died" she didn't got passed thought bonnie.

@ foso

Because she was a human when they thought she had died. Humans don't pass over to the other side.

@ Leanne

She was a doppelgänger and a traveler which still makes her a supernatural. So she should of passed throughy Bonnie.

Katherines part of the show but she did cause alot of problems for Delena .I will miss her but im glad Elena is back .

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 15 Quotes

Katherine is a passenger in Elena, except it's worst… because none of us seemed to notice!

If I had known I just had to die to drag your attention from Stefan, I'd have tried it a long time ago.
