The Vampire Diaries Review: The Beginning of the End

by at .  Updated at . Comments

I wanted to start off this review with a little "Save the Doppelgangers, Save the World."

However, the end of The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 21 has left me pretty speechless.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Dead Stefan?
Am I really gone? Stefan looks to Bonnie for help in this scene from The Vampire Diaries.

After escaping from Markos, getting drained of almost all of their blood, Stefan and Elena slowly hitchhike their way back to Mystic Falls. Now that Markos has enough of their blood, the spell has begun.

Travelers are dying left and right, including Maria the woman who saved Stefan and Elena. Maria's husband, Julian, has taken up permanent residence in Tyler Lockwood's body - but in the last few days it seems like Julian has flipped sides now that the travelers have it out for him.

That was, until Stefan broke the news to him that Maria had died at the hands of the witches. Everyone's been hearing that Caroline would witness some horrific event and the second Julian started to flip out, I felt like I saw a car accident happen in slow motion.

Stefan Salvatore's heart was literally been ripped out of his body.

Gathering myself from my state of shock, I ask...what does this all mean?

We all know that death doesn't exactly stick when it comes to The Vampire Diaries but the other side is disintegrating slowly before our eyes. Bonnie and Enzo's plan to use Maria is now kaput since Maria vanished into the darkness. Now what?

That scene when Bonnie saw Stefan show up as a ghost was painful. We can't lose Stefan. Yet the preview (below) for the finale looked almost lighthearted with the group preparing for war and Damon's usual humorous quips.

You have Elena participating in squirrel slaughter?

Damon

What I'm left with is a major state of confusion. It seems to me that Mystic Falls is kaput and whichever cast members remain will be in a new place next season. Or will they simply all be dead and on some version of the other side?

I'm assuming all magic is not eradicated because how will the world of the witches exist on TVD and The Originals? It's a pretty crucial part of both shows.

What's most interesting at this point is how the travelers' spell takes away the magic of vampirism leaving all of our resident vampires in their pre-vampire states, ie: Elena choking on water, Damon shot.

I'm leaving you all with the question on everybody's lips: Is Stefan really gone?

Here is your first look at The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 22, "Home."

I don't mind your points of view but for the love of all that is good, PLEASE USE REAL WORDS! My brain lost cells reading that.

One last thing, I'm SUPER SICK of the travelers. Seriously one of the most boring villains I've ever seen, period. But then I think all villains pale after Klaus & Mikael. LOVE to hate them both. Klaus was evil but Papa original is just horrific. Although I am completely Team Klaus/Elijah on Originals. Even when they are being the "bad guys".

Anyone else wondering exactly why Jeremy seemed to be "safe" from the anti magic spell? Bonnie used witch magic to bring him back. Major continuity error if he actually wasn't affected by it. But then they supposedly have continuity errors all over the place. I honestly don't know most of them. I guess I just haven't been that observant. I'm seriously not happy about this episode though. Or most of this season. I'm the person that usually likes crappy seasons too because I believe that if you are entertained and enjoy at least half the episode, they've done their job - to entertain you. You don't have to like the whole thing, just believe it wasn't a waste of time. I've loved every season of TVD so far but...I'm seriously thinking most of this season is wasted time. Sigh.

I was a little confused with the continuity, like for example:
The magic was gone, Tyler/Julian couldn't bite Markos anymore but he could rip stefan chest with his hand?
I didn't get it or maybe I was just not paying atention or just stupid.

The Jeremy thing crossed my mind too, but I think he's safe because although he was *brought back* by magic, he's not actually *sustained* by it. The best analogy that comes to mind is, it's like he was resuscitated with a defibrillator. Once it's done, it's done (give or take a little scar tissue). Being a vampire is more like being on a pacemaker.

Good point. He was magical at death, but still a mortal.

Stefan better not stay dead! He was ths main reason the show even started! The people who should die and not come back are the witch twins and Tyler! Tyler is already gone anyway.

I don't agree about Stefan, it's the triangle from the books that started the show. But I completely agree about who should die. I'm really sick of Tyler's character. He just doesn't seem to get much interesting plot lines. Although I did mostly enjoy his part while the travelers had him. Probably the only thing I liked about the travelers.

Hope, Stefan is not permanently gone. Stefan and Damon are the true couple that I love to watch, like Supernatural. Everyone else is just extra to me. I love the Salvatore brothers they are they heart of TVD. If they do bring him back, It better be epic and not some weak a$$ story-line.

Ugh, why didn't Elena die instead? I'm so tired of her being rescued all the time. Maybe Paul Wesley saw how much TVD sucked this season and is heading to the originals :)

We get it Julie. You have a crazy crush on Ian. Pathetic. You made Paul's scenes smaller and smaller this season. Newsflash, I will not ever watch this show again. btw, didn't buy last season's DVD because it was all about Damon and won't be buy this season either. I did buy 1, 2 and 3.

@ corina

ironically a lot of people think Julie hates Damon and loves Stefan . This whole thing is ridiculous by the way.

@ anesu

Have you watched this show? It's obvious Julie is living in the dream world of Damon/Delena. Paul has been put on the sidelines for a couple of seasons. At least 1,2 and 3 they had ALL the cast on the show. Now it's just Damon or Delena or Damon being talked about. This show is done. BIGTIME.

@ kara

As a Damon/Elena fan, even I know Stefan is essential to the story line. Stefan/Damon and Elena are the Vampire Diaries. Without one or the other, the show is done. As much as I love Damon, I couldn't watch him without Stefan. He is Damon's heart and Elena his soul. He is vital to the show. It would be beyond stupid to keep him off permanently, I just don't think the writers or producers are that stupid. Plus, who hasn't died on TVD, except Damon or Stephan. It's their turn.

Wait, so if Stefan --- a doppelganger --- is dead, doesn't that mean that the Traveler's spell is broken which ALSO means the Other Side isn't going anywhere? Or am I missing something here? Anyway, this episode was amazing and the final minutes definitely had my jaw on the floor. I actually had tears roll down my face and I stopped breathing for a second. It was as though my heart was ripped out.

Maybe then if Damon somehow finds a way to kill Markos then that can some how bring Stefan back. Super long shot but I keep running scenarios in my head of ways they can bring him back! THEY HAVE TO!

Avatar
@ Kelly

I think him dying stopped the spell. But the other side is still breaking because it had to do with Markos leaving. He doesn't just go back since Stefan is dead. It's still in massive nothingness of Never Ending Story mode. So you(the characters) either need to get pulled out or go down with it.

Avatar

No waaaay will Stefan be gone for good.

Avatar

Wow !! That was the best 2 final minutes of an episode of Vampire Diaries in a long time... I don't really want to think it, but he just might be gone for good.He basically gave Elena his blessing to go after Damon and be with him. he didn't even bother to hang around as a ghost ! it ended so great, my jaw finally dropped !! but then that horrible promo for the season finale set it up to look once again like a comedy show #thumbsdown.... I mean really do they have to keep the promos so lighthearted all the damn time ? I really hate the funny tone throughout the promos and I hope they remedy that next season....Who else here was annoyed at the finale promo ?

Avatar
@ Ilk_vomit

I totally agree! I was so dissapointed in the promo for the season finale. Seriously! Its the season finale! Its supposed to seem dramatic and action packed!

Avatar
@ ladyrose

Agree with both of you. Either they don't know about Stefan yet in ALL of the stupid scenes they aired or the finale is the worst writing we've seen yet. Stefan, Damon, and Elena are the main cast and center of the show. I doubt they can actually permanently die. Besides, as much as I enjoy delena, it will get mighty boring with Stefan around. (Relax stelena shippers, I'm not against you at all) Plus as much as I hate the never ending triangle, I will quit watching if he is dead and gone. But if I remember right, I think all 3 of them end up dead at various points in the books and are brought back. Of course they are wildly off the book storyline course but I'm thinking it's just one of those times. I'm so ready to quit watching this and just watch Originals. Unless they kill the Klayley baby. That would finish me on that show too.

Nah Stephen and Enzo both come back. Somehow if the afterlife fractures it resets things.
