The Vampire Diaries Season 7: Who Could Be Out?

at .  Updated at .

Yes, you read this headline correctly.

While The Vampire Diaries Season 6 doesn't premiere until October 2, we can't help but speculate about The Vampire Diaries Season 7 for one very good reason:

Only two of the show's three leads have signed on for a potential renewal, according to E! News, although it's unclear whether Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley or Ian Somerhalder is the one holding out.

Despite decreasing ratings, network sources confirm that Season 7 would be a strong likelihood if all three main stars stick around, though the early numbers for Season 6 will clearly play a factor in this decision.

Kristin Dos Santos, however, also says it's possible the series will go forth with only two of the three leads returning.

This is all speculation, of course. It's very early to make any kind of prediction.

But Julie Plec has said she has "plans" for Season 7 and executives at The CW have made it clear they want the show to go on... and on... and on.

As for which star may be hesitant to sign back on?

Nina Dobrev has a burgeoning film career (she currently stars in Let's Be Cops); Paul Wesley has hinted at times that he's a bit sick of playing nice guy Stefan; and Ian Somerhalder has a number of interests, most notably his charitable foundation, that could take him away from Mystic Falls.

Which actor/actress do you think hasn't signed a new contract yet? And would you want The Vampire Diaries with only two of Stefan, Elena and Damon?

The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 1 airs on Thursday, October 2 at 8/7c.

Damon: My new girlfriend. Andie Starr. Action News.
Alaric: It's not called Action News.
Damon: I know. I like just saying it.
