Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Episode 10 Review: Magnum Opus

at .  Updated at .

After being sidelined with the flu last week, Ichabod was back in a big way on Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Episode 10.

This installment had all the elements I love about this series. The writers gave us yet another episode that proves they're back on track. I have no doubt next week's Midseason Finale Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Episode 11 is going to blow our minds.

I loved that Katrina used a mirror to communicate again. We haven't seen much of that this season and it was easily the quickest way for Kat to inform the witnesses that Moloch's growing up too fast. It also meant we would probably not see her too much this week. Remember the formula, Katrina in small doses is good for the soul.

Naturally, nasty sin eater Henry touches the mirror and learns our heroes' plan. By the way, the writers wasted no time putting Grace Dixon's journal to good use. The Sword of Methuselah, yeah that's the ticket!

Ichabod: In the book of Enoch there is the legend of Methuselah. He was given a sword with the power to kill any being on Earth. He used it to take down a thousand demons.
Abbie: So Mama was right the sword can kill Moloch.

Ben Franklin's clues form a sort of treasure map leading to the sword. Sounds easy enough right? Unfortunately, the person that reclaims the sword must know themselves completely or die. So there's that little setback.

Aside from checking in with Kat, Jenny and Irving a few times this week's installment felt very much like the Sleepy Hollow we fell in love with last season. Abbie and Ichabod on a quest to stop evil. They've strayed so far from that simple formula, it's nice to get back to it.

Who made Henry boss? I was surprised Abraham took orders from him so easily. Has power shifted between them? Headless was once our big bad, now he's Henry's errand boy. What's up with that?

The flashbacks between Ichabod and Abraham were fun. I hadn't realized how much I missed their past interactions. Isn't it something that past-Katrina was so influential and desired by the two pals. I definitely like her best in flashbacks or tiny doses in the present.

Ichabod: Whatever man I may be, Abraham, I'm still your better.
Abraham: Toy swords and pretend fighting, but come test yourself in the real world and decide; were you meant to teach history or to make it.

Part of what hooked me originally was that Ichabod and the Horseman's fates were intwined. Again, it was nice to revist that theme this week.

Wasn't it brilliant that a Gorgon was the guardian of Methuselah's sword? The fact Ichabod and Abbie put Headless to good use defeating the thing was perfection. The special effects were pretty impressive too, the Gorgon wasn't cheesy in the least.

I'm not sure I've enjoyed another scene more this season than the search for the sword.

Locking eyes with the Gorgon turns a person to stone. We can't even get near enough to kill it. Maybe someone with no eyes can.

Abbie

It was slightly stressful watching as Abbie and Ichabod waited to lure Headless into that underground cavern. The plan worked like a charm, but the witnesses were faced with several swords. Can't make it too easy now can we.

I was surprised Ichabod and Abbie could see Abraham's head, the cavern was enchanted. It was the only way Headless and Ichabod could have actual dialogue. Excellent fight sequence as well.

Abraham: I was supposed to be the hero of this story. Not the villain.
Ichabod: Do not dare put this on me. You chose the mantle of Death. You chose Moloch.

In the end, Abraham heard Moloch's horn and conveniently rushed back to his master. I thought it was a powerful choice Abraham made to spare Ichabod so he could suffer in Hell rather than kill him. An eternity of Katrina with Abraham is worse than a thousand deaths.

Working together Ichabod and Abbie managed to acquire the sword of Methuselah. Though Moloch is now fully grown, at least the witnesses have the sword to defeat him. I can't believe they left us hanging like that. It's going to be a long week until the Midseason finale.

What did you think of "Magnum Opus?" Did it feel like old school Sleepy Hollow to you too? Was Headless vs Gorgon the best battle we've seen on this show or what? You're up Sleepyheads, hit the comments below and share your thoughts with me. Look for our Sleepy Hollow round table later this week.
