The Big Bang Theory Season 8 Episode 9 Review: The Septum Deviation

Only a character like Sheldon Cooper could get away with freaking out like he did over Leonard's surgery on The Big Bang Theory Season 8 Episode 9.

If you woke up with your roommate watching you sleep, you'd call the police or move out, right? For Sheldon and Leonard, it's simply another weird Sheldon idiosyncrasy. I'm surprised Sheldon didn't set up a studio quality recording system to record Leonard's snore in case the surgery worked or ... Leonard died.

Leonard's Surgery - The Big Bang Theory

While I found the set up to be a little too long, especially with the white board and the various ways that Leonard's death risk increased, I enjoyed the episode and laughed. I don't know why I liked it so much, but I really enjoyed the Tesla "Head's Up" game question. Sheldon's Mini-Cooper answer cracked me up.

Amy: It's not you. Now think, there's a car named after him.
Sheldon: Of course there is. The Mini Cooper, 'cause it's me.
Amy: How about this: he's a poor man's Sheldon Cooper.
Sheldon: Oh, Tesla.

That joke provided some light-hearted humor to start off the episode which was bogged down in some less than light jokes. I didn't enjoy the Raj-Howard-Bernadette stuff as much. The muffin jokes were perfect for Bernadette and showcased her sometimes quirky humor. The part I didn't enjoy at all was the relationship stuff at the end.

The writers need to come up with something new for Howard and Bernadette. Their relationship woes have gotten very stale. Could it be time for them to have a baby? Or start thinking about having a baby? They need some new conflict or challenges coming their way to freshen up their marriage and open up more avenues for jokes.

Sheldon and Leonard had a few great zingers for each other. Sheldon called Leonard a mucus-powered white noise machine. And, Leonard called Sheldon an albino bogeyman. It's these moments that leave me wondering if the show could survive if Leonard did move out and leave Sheldon. If they live across the hall from each other it could work, but Sheldon living alone would be sad. Would he have a roommate agreement with himself?

We don't have to worry about that for now. Instead, we get to see how Leonard's comments cause Sheldon some reflection. Okay, probably not really reflection, but a tiny tiny bit of care for his roommate.

Leonard: Okay, first of all, the surgery was a success, and secondly, I didn't even want you there.
Sheldon: Wow. I don't know which hurts worse-- my nose or my heart.

In another sign of love and caring, Sheldon had two urns made. Which was your favorite?  Leonard's urn: "Here lie the ashes of Leonard Hofstadter. He thought he was right, but his roommate knew better"? or Sheldon's urn: "I'm with stupid"? Together they were hilarious. I hope they keep them around the apartment.

The moment that had me laughing out loud was when Sheldon ran in to the glass. That was hilarious! It was a fitting end to the situation for both Sheldon and Leonard to have bandaged noses. At least they both survived so the show can live on for another day!

The Big Bang Theory Season 8 Episode 9 Quotes

Sheldon: But you don't have a life-threatening condition. Why would you take the risk of surgery?
Leonard: Sheldon, it's a routine procedure.
Penny: I've heard you complain about his snoring.
Sheldon: We... Yes, for the first five or six years, but I've gotten used to it. It helps me sleep. He's like my mucus-powered white noise machine.

Amy: It's not you. Now think, there's a car named after him.
Sheldon: Of course there is. The Mini Cooper, 'cause it's me.
Amy: How about this: he's a poor man's Sheldon Cooper.
Sheldon: Oh, Tesla.
