Bones Round Table: Max's Big Secret

at .

We're back for another Bones Round Table!

On Bones Season 10 Episode 14, Brennan had issues with her father, who later revealed the truth about an important part of Brennan's past.

This week, TV Fanatic writers Christine Orlando, Mary Kate Venedam, and Ashley Bissette Sumerel are joined by Bridget Liszewski from The TV Junkies for a discussion of "The Putter in the Rough."

Join them to see what they had to see about Brennan's reaction, Max's secret, and more!

Was Brennan too harsh with Max when he canceled his plans with Christine?

Bridget: I don't think so. She clearly still harbors some unresolved feelings over his abandoning her when she was young and she saw that happening again with her daughter. As a parent you want nothing more than to protect your child so she was just protecting Christine. Max was being awful shady too and as both Booth and Brennan said it's not like he has the best track record.

Christine: No. Unfortunately, Brennan still has some deep abandonment issues and Max was hiding something important from her. He’s been involved with criminals for most of his life. Brennan’s first priority is to protect Christine, even if it is from her own grandfather from time to time.

Mary Kate: Yes, because it obviously brought back painful memories of when he left her. The more in depth the story got it probably felt worse for her.

Ashley: A little, only because I think their relationship has come so far by now.

Did you have any guesses about what Max was hiding, and were you surprised by what he had been up to?

Bridget: Honestly, no. I felt like we weren't given enough of a chance to even guess. I just figured that it probably wasn't good. I'm glad it turned out the way it did in the end and I was wrong.

Christine: I had no clue but I was hoping it was something that would allow him to make amends with his daughter once again because every time Max lets Brennan down, it crushes her emotionally.

Mary Kate: I thought it would be something more simple than grave robbing, like a date or meeting a prison friend.

Ashley: I had two guesses, which were both polarizing. I figured it was either something that was going to get him into major trouble, or that it was going to be something simple like Mary Kate says. I did think the grave-robbing was strange, and I was glad it turned out to be something positive in the end.

What were thoughts on Wendell's story this week?

Bridget: I really could have cared less about the clock story. I don't know, I just wasn't into it and was mad it was taking time away from Max and Brennan, which I really wanted to see more of. I do really enjoy his relationship with Hodgins, and I'm glad we got to see some of that. But we don't see a lot of the other interns' personal lives, so I don't think we need to waste time on Wendell's. I'd rather see more Hodgins and Angela instead.

Christine: I actually enjoyed it. First, I have a thing for clocks. Second, I love seeing Hodgins and Wendall work together, they make a good team. Third, I enjoyed the ending about how the clock was now keeping time for a new couple. Overall, I thought it was a sweet B-story.

Mary Kate: I'm always a fan of whenever Wendell returns to the Jeffersonian. The story was really random, but it got Wendell and Hodgins to work together, which is always a plus.

Ashley: I do agree with Bridget that it took time away from other stories that could have been more developed, but I still enjoyed watching it. I liked the symbolism of the clock, and I also enjoy anytime we see Wendell and Hodgins work together.

Was there anything missing from "The Putter in the Rough?"

Bridget: Yes, more time to focus on the Max story. It just felt like it wasn't given the time it deserved considering how much his abandoning Brennan has affected her whole life and their relationship. To be able to finally reveal why he up and left just seems like it's something that deserved a LOT more focus during the episode.

Christine: I agree with Bridget. Max's explanation was a huge plot point concerning Brennan’s childhood. It felt as though there should have been more build up to the big reveal.

Mary Kate: I still miss Angela and Brennan's friendship. I feel like they rarely have interaction with each other anymore. Angela seems to mostly stick to the Angela-tron and we don't see her as often as we used to.

Ashley: I agree with the fact that there wasn't enough attention devoted to the Max story, especially since the ending was so significant.

What was your favorite quote or scene from this episode?

Bridget: I always have to laugh when Hodgins gets all excited by science. So when he told Booth, "I'm not going to let your cold, dark heart ruin my lucky day," I had to smile. You go, King of the Lab!

Christine: Hodgins telling Wendell to use his cancer story with his girlfriend as a Get Out of Jail free card. Leave it to Hodgins to find the upside to cancer.

Mary Kate: I liked Hodgins in the episode. He had his funny moment with Booth at the crime scene and also he had a fun story with Wendell. Their friendship is always entertaining.

Ashley: I really enjoyed the scenes at the mini-gold tournament. I thought it gave some fun moments for Booth and Brennan. This was one of my favorite quotes:

Brennan: I believe the term is "one in the hole!"
Booth: No, Bones, it's "hole in one."
