Lost Girl Season 5 Episode 5 Review: It's Your Lucky Fae

at .  Updated at .

Happy Birthday, Bo! Nothing like waking up with a gift from Hades to kick off the festivities. But at least he remembered.

In true Fae fashion, Bo's big day takes a backseat to trouble on Lost Girl Season 5 Episode 5. The episode continues dealing with the missing bodies from elevator crash, but intertwines this serious business with a plot involving a wacky cat talisman that is slowly turning Bo into a thirty-something feline version of 80's Teen Wolf.

It's odd to see an oracle gouge her own eyes out in the same space as a grown woman cleaning herself by licking the back of her hand, but when it comes to Lost Girl, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Bo Online - Lost Girl

I love when characters introduced in past seasons come back. Throughout the series, the Dal functions like a Fae way station of sorts, and Trick's ledger is a reminder of that. Because Fae do live such a long time, it makes sense that they would pass through again and again. Cassie was first introduced in Lost Girl Season 1, but played a larger role in Lost Girl Season 4 Episode 7, when she helped Bo save Dyson.

But while the Fae world is old, it's also keeping up with the times – enter Fae Date. I loved that. Although they should probably work on their screening process a little better as not to let entities assuming bodies of dead elevator crash victims into the mix.

But I was very happy that "It's Your Lucky Fae" brought the action back to the elevator crash. I think this has the potential to be a fantastic story, but there are still so many unknowns at this point. I am sufficiently intrigued. Also, I would totally watch a buddy cop spin-off starring Detective Dyson and medical examiner Lauren Lewis.

Trick: By bringing good luck to its owner, it steals it from those who don't pay it reverence.
Lauren: All this because I didn't respect the stuffed corpse of a dead cat?

Where the episode falters slightly, and only slightly, is the cat talisman hoopla. I love camp more than most people, but I wasn't 100% sold on this subplot. It wasn't developed enough, and instead, was kind of just there. If you're going to make Bo slowly become a cat, then let's do this. I want to see more than just visual cues.

And it didn't think mesh all that well with the main plot of Cassie's disappearance. An oracle is bloody and blindfolded and Bo is hot on her tail... or has a tail? If Bo's cat-like reflexes had been useful, or if the main story had to do with animals, it may have made a bit more sense. The way this episode was set-up, the lucky talisman could have been anything lucky. Why a cat?

This contrast could only ever work on a fantastically campy show like Lost Girl, which knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to masquerade as anything else.

Bo: Why am in a box? I've said it before and I'll say it again: I hate cats.

While Bo had her hands paws full with Cassie's disappearance, Lauren and Tamsin got some more one-on-one time. After the hospital scene between the two in Lost Girl Season 5 Episode 3, I was really hoping they would get to do some more bantering.

I do find it surprising that Lauren forgot Bo's birthday. I know she has a lot on her plate with Evony and her new Fae pet (I imagine it like a Gremlin that she can't feed after midnight), but it seems out of character for her to let that date slip her mind.

Tamsin: I can't believe we forgot Bo's birthday. We're the worst. I understand how I forgot, because hello, it's me. But how did you forget?
Lauren: I've had a lot going on. I've been very busy.
Tamsin: Sucking up to Evony?
Lauren: I like to call it "working."

I know the Doccubus fan base is huge, and this season has been slow to work with that relationship. While there have been small moments between Bo and Lauren and a few chi-boosting sessions with Dyson (for the chi, obviously; all business there), it seems that the first part of the season has not really addressed the relationship issue.

At this point, Lost Girl Season 5 has positioned Bo to kick ass and take names. And have a little fun while she's at it.

What's the matter, Lauren? I thought you were all boom-boom-pow over Bo's crazy wheel. [Lauren coughing] You totally swallowed a bug, didn't you?

Tamsin

Finally, it's the Valkyrie's day in the sun and let's enjoy it while it lasts. I think it's pretty safe to say (with Lost Girl Season 5 being the end of the series), unfortunately for Tamsin, it's a two-horse race. While I love the Bo/Tamsin mash-up, the series has been developing the Lauren/Bo/Dyson triangle for far too many seasons to jump ship for a new angle now.

But, for now, Tamsin is wrapped up with a bow. Literally. Happy Birthday, Bo!

What did you think of 'It's Your Lucky Fae"? Were you excited to see Tamsin and Bo hook up, or are you holding out for a reunion with either Lauren or Dyson? Did the cat storyline work or did it miss the mark? What are you looking forward to from Lost Girl Season 5 Episode 6? Sound off in the comments!
