20 Gut-Wrenching Game of Thrones Moments

at .  Updated at .

Game of Thrones is known for killing off all our favorite characters. No one is safe.

Over the years, Thrones has given us some truly disturbing scenes. However, the Game of Thrones Season 5 Finale managed to put every other season to shame by offing at least six characters in one hour. Is that insane or what?

Of course, it's always possible Sansa and Theon survived their jump and that Melisandre (or the Night's King) bring Jon back from the dead.

We've got ten months to ponder everyone's fate. For now, go ahead and revisit a few standout Thrones moments below...

1. The Night's King Resurrection

The massacre at Hardhome was a game changer for Jon Snow and company. As they watched from the safety of their ships, the mysterious Night's King resurrected all the fallen wildlings amassing thousands of new wights for his army. That scene will undoubtedly go down in Thrones history as one of the most memorable and disturbing of all time.

2. Jon Snow's Murder

There were several shocking deaths throughout Game of Thrones Season 5. However, Jon's death at the hands of his Night's Watch brothers is at the top of our list. Has Jon Snow's watch truly ended? Both director David Nutter, and star Kit Harington confirmed that Jon is, in fact, dead. What do you think?

3. Shireen Baratheon is Sacrificed

Many characters have met horrific deaths on Game of Thrones, but none as revolting as Stannis sacrificing his daughter. Poor Princess Shireen had no idea what she was volunteering for when she offered to do what she could to help her father. Selyse collapsed watching her daughter burn and later hanged herself. However, Stannis deserved a much more agonizing death.

4. Mance Rayder Burns

The death of Mance Rayder surprised even fans of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. The King-Beyond-the-Wall meets a different fate in the books. Mance's death at the stake was a clear sign the TV series would be deviating more than ever from the source material in the fifth season.

5. Myrcella is Poisoned

For a minute there, we actually believed Jaime and Myrcella escaped Dorne unscathed. Then, blood began to drip from the young girl's nose and we realized she had been poisoned. Though Ellaria Sand swore her allegiance to Prince Doran, all it took was a poison-laced kiss to start a war. Prince Trystane doesn't stand a chance once they arrive in King's Landing.

6. Arya Finishes Off Meryn Trant

Ser Meryn Trant's death wasn't a shocker, but watching Arya do the deed like an expert assassin certainly was. Not only did she gouge his eyes out and stab the villain repeatedly, but the girl took great pleasure in slitting his throat. Arya Stark may not be "No One," but she sure as hell has come a long way. That's another name off her list!

7. Maester Aemon Dies

What was shocking about Maester Aemon's death you ask? Well, simply the fact that the kindly Targaryen died of natural causes. Now that's something you don't see every day on Game of Thrones, right? "He was the blood of the dragon, but now his fire has gone out. And now his watch is ended."

8. The Mountain Crushes The Viper

We all knew the battle between the Viper and the Mountain was going to be intense. Readers of the book series even knew the outcome. However, it's doubtful anyone imagined just how graphic and grusome the scene would turn out. This one's going to be tough to beat!

9. The Red Wedding

The moment the band started playing "The Rains of Castamere," something felt terribly off. Sure, this was the big moment the showrunners had been looking forward to since day one. Lord Frey's infamous massacre played out as cruelly as many imagined. However, producers gave even fans of George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series a surprise by having Robb's wife repeatedly stabbed in her pregnant belly. That was not Talisa's fate in the books.

10. Joffrey's Poisoning

Let's be honest, we all wanted the little bugger to bite it. However, when the moment came it was devasting. Not only did Joffrey die in his mother's helpless arms (on his wedding day), but everyone present witnessed his murder. What a way to go!

11. Viserys' Golden Crown

Viserys Targaryen was instantly unlikeable. I mean, who sells their sister off to Khal Drogo in order to buy himself the Dothraki's loyalty? He wanted the crown so badly, Drogo crowed him during one of his many outbursts. It's just a shame the crown wasn't in a more solid state. Ouch!

12. Theon's Severed Penis

As if Theon's torture at the hands of the sadistic Ramsay Snow wasn't enough, the villain had to take his manhood and tease him about it. Yes, Theon betrayed Robb Stark by taking Winterfell and killing two young boys in place of Bran and Rickon. However being flayed, mutilated and castrated was a tough price to pay. Hell, anyone would assume the identity of Reek to be left alone.

13. Jamie Loses a Hand

Jamie Lannister, the "Kingslayer," tried to do a nice thing for Brienne of Tarth only to lose his sword hand in the process. The trauma did change him though, and Jamie has become a far more interesting character since.

14. Joffrey's Target Practice

Joffrey and his damn crossbow! After learning that Ros was spying on him for Varys, Littlefinger handed Ros over to Joffrey for some live target practice. The vile little king not only enjoyed torturing her, but he shot her multiple times while tied to his bed.

15. Lysa Takes Flight

We all realized right away, that someone important was going to make their grand exit out the moon door. Of course, Sansa's story is far from over, so when Littlefinger approached the arguing women it was clear who was going bye bye.

16. Sword Through Karl's Head

Karl's death was another one of those incredibly graphic moments on the show. The guy was an a-hole and he certainly hasn't been missed; so nice work Jon Snow. You see Ygritte, he does know something after all.

17. Melisandre's Shadow-creature

As if Melisandre giving birth to that shadow-creature wasn't enough, it had to sneak up behind Renly Baratheon and take his life. It's true that Renly would not have made a great king, but he was likeable enough. His death also lead to Brienne's mission, which has given us several memorable moments as well.

18. Dracarys

Daenerys had been teaching Drogon to breathe fire and you just knew that was going to come in handy one day. Well, when her deal with slave trader, Kraznys mo Nakloz, was complete she sealed it with a... "Dracarys!" It was a beautiful moment, you could almost hear fans around the world applauding.

19. Tywin Dies on the John

Nasty old Tywin Lannister had to go, we all knew his days were numbered. The fact he died wasn't a shock. However, watching his son, Tyrion, kill him while sitting on the john was absolutely priceless.

20. The Beheading of Ned Stark

The shocker that started them all! Sean Bean (Eddard Stark) was probably the most familiar face on the show when it premiered in 2011. We not only fell in love with the character, but the entire Stark clan. Joffrey beheading Ned was a sign no one was safe on Game of Thrones, and that's proven to be painfully true over the years.
