iZombie Season 1 Episode 13 Review: Blaine's World

at .

The qualifications for a good finale include one explosion, one beloved character sitting on the brink of life and death, and one terrifying cliffhanger to leave the audience guessing.

iZombie Season 1 Episode 13 delivered all three, and we're more stoked for iZombie Season 2 than ever!

To be completely honest, while this finale was definitely a game changer, it was also a bit of a wash on some parts. I'd say it split about 50/50 on amazing and awful.

AMAZING: Major

All season, we've been building up to Major's realization that zombies exist, Liv is one of them, and they're taking over Seattle. The finale delivered on that plot in a big way, not just with Major's interactions with Blaine (priceless!) but also his take down of the Meat Cute diner, The Walking Dead style.

Major: Why are you doing this?
Blaine: Daddy issues. Megalomania. Greed. Wow, that felt really good to get off my chest.

Grenades and headshots and explosions lit up the night sky, and that action sequence will go down as some of Major's best work on the show to date. It was the perfect way to pay off what had been building all season.

AWFUL: Max Rager

They mystery of Max Rager might not be totally done with, so this is a tentative awful. But if tonight's episode was truly the end of the line for the nefarious energy drink company, then.... lame! So much time and so many characters were sacrificed on the Max Rager altar, and it would be a shame to see it resolved so easily.

Not to mention, the teenagers who were so interesting last week became a total drag.

Who cares about Cam and his diabolical plan to fake his death and claim some blackmail money, when Major is in so much danger and Liv is oblivious? If ever there was a time to abandon the procedural element and focus on the main characters, it was this finale.

AMAZING: The Cure

Curing Blaine seemed like a logical end for such a dastardly villain, though I'm not sure it will keep him off the zombie radar forever. Blaine will be back with a new vendetta next year, mark my words!

Turning you back to your old self is the primary objective, but it is vital that we're able to do the same with all the other zombies we believe are out there.

Liv turning Major to save him was epic, but not as epic as her decision to cure him immediately after. She sacrificed the last dose of the cure (for herself and the rest of the city's innocent zombie victims) to give Major his life back. In the grand scheme of things, it might come back to bite her – no pun intended – but it was a huge gesture nonetheless.

AWFUL: Peyton

After all that worrying over Peyton's discovery that Liv was a zombie, she wasn't even in the damn finale!

I'm not sure what the plan here might be, but to me, Peyton has been one of the biggest let downs of the season. Constantly off screen with nothing to do, she's been a pretty pointless addition to the story. Finding out how Peyton would react to Liv's secret seemed like a hammer that would absolutely drop in the finale.

Leaving it hanging for next year seems like a promise left unfulfilled more than anything.

AMAZING: Evan at death's door!

Evan has been another side character kept mainly in the background, but unlike Peyton, he's showing more and more promise.

With Evan in surgery – and not likely to make it – it looks like Liv might be forced to finally come clean to her family about why she can't donate blood to save him. After Major's anger over her lies and secrets, something tells me she's feeling more prone to honesty these days. But will she start Season 2 with a totally clean conscience? Or more lies?

Overall, iZombie paid off it's hanging plot lines, and for that I can't blame them. I just wish they'd done it in a less rushed and distracting way. I could have done without the Max Rager/teenager blackmail side story in exchange for some follow through on Peyton, plus more time with Major and Liv and Blaine. But ultimately, iZombie finished out their first season strong and set up next year with some big questions.
