Killjoys Season 1 Episode 9 Review: Enemy Khlyen

at .  Updated at .

Okay guys, did I call it or what? That's right... Level 6 is totally a thing!

However, it never occurred to me Khlyen was Level 6, nor that the team would track him down to the RAC. Exactly what takes place on the moon of Arkyn and Red 17 both remain interesting little mysteries for the finale.

Can you believe we've hit the penultimate episode of the season? Killjoys Season 1 Episode 9 sure gave us plenty to talk about, so let's dive right in shall we?

I felt kind of bad for D'av, getting his ass kicked over a measly disorderly warrant. That dude was huge too! Sure, you can argue he deserved that and more, but I've never thought of him as the sharpest knife in the drawer. He's just this big lug of a guy who jumps into situations head first.

Unlike sensitive and brainy Johnny, D'avin doesn't think before he acts. He just deals with the consequences later on. We've all known someone like that, right? It doesn't make them bad people, you just have to take the good with the bad sometimes.

Anyway I digress, the whole point of the opening scene was for D'avin to discover Alvis' hidden weapons. The "little colonel" caused some serious damage at the RAC, didn't it? I enjoyed their interaction and love how the supporting players have become much more important than we initially anticipated.

When Dutch dropped by to return D'av's stuff, the awkwardness was unbearable. Luke Macfarlane does such a great job of making D'avin likable, despite everything that's gone down. I'm hoping his sacrifice at the RAC doesn't go unnoticed. That was a massively selfless act for him, and it made me like the guy infinitely more.

Wasn't Dutch's reaction to Johnny's "present" priceless? "Ah you got us a pet," she said. I lost it laughing. It was so cool to see Carleen from Utopia pop up here. The tech-wiz not only fixed Khlyen's neural link, but she jacked Dutch into his psyche. As Carleen prattled on about cerebral projection, Johnny took a moment to translate. "We're gonna put you in this thing," he told Dutch. Yeah, Aaron Ashmore gets some of the best lines, and his delivery is always excellent. Johnny's the man!

In retrospect, it made perfect sense Khlyen worked for (or created) the RAC.

Dutch: Khlyen is part of the RAC, John. What if he was part of it this whole time? What if I never really escaped?
John: Well then, let's finally set you free.
Dutch: No matter what it takes.
John: I'll clear my schedule.
Dutch: The bad news is the RAC is in the most heavily fortified station in the Quad.
John: Yeah but the good news is, our badges get us in the front door.

Khlyen is definitely a big deal. Dutch described him as an officer who works "interstellar," introducing the RAC to places that need order. The fact her latest memory of Khlyen was a pleasant one was important. He trained her to kill, sure, but it was all part of her self-preservation.

Is Yalena's father a king or an important figure outside the Quad? Is he on Arkyn? Will we meet him in the finale? Wasn't it odd to hear Johnny call her Yalena? Their relationship is, without a doubt, my favorite of the series because it's purely platonic. It's just goes so much deeper than scratching that sex itch, you know?

Though Dutch told D'avin The Company's attempt at terraforming Arkyn was a failure, it seems that's just the "official" story. I'm seriously hoping we visit Arkyn in the final hour of the season.

I realize D'avin said it was just a formality (plus Khlyen fixed their status later), but hearing Dutch say they were dissolving the team hurt. Didn't the little "So say you all" moment give you a Battlestar Galactica flashback?

Turin has always been very suspicious of Dutch, so it made sense he'd question the trio's breakup.

D'avin: If you had anything incriminating on these agents, you would have arrested them the second they stepped onto the station. Sir.
Turin: He's bossy, I like him. So why don't you?
Dutch: It didn't work out.
Turin: You sleep with him?
John: Hey.
Dutch: Yes.
Turin: Haha and made the jilted Jaqobis mad. You're such a piece of work.
D'avin: I'm the one who screwed up. I'm the one they're here to report on.
Turin: You shut up, bossy.
D'avin: Because I beat her, then stabbed him.
Turin: You attacked your own team? The RAC takes assault on its own very seriously.
D'avin: Then I wanna speak to a rep, but first I want to know that this break up is official.

D'avin did a pretty convincing job selling the whole story. Hell, I know how things actually went down, and I found myself believing the guy. D'av took the lead and planned things well. He was pretty damn impressive, wasn't he? Again, I hope Johnny recognizes this and it helps bring them closer.

While John went for the plasma processor, Dutch made her way to Khlyen on Level 71. John just had to collect some of the plasma, didn't he?

Turin caught up with D'avin and shocked him a bit. His suspicions are warranted since Dutch started at Level 5 and all complaints about her disappear. It was the mention of Red 17 that caught D'av's attention, though. Apparently, there is a connection between that abandoned torture cruiser and either Level 6 Killjoys or Arkyn. Don't you just love how the little puzzle pieces fall neatly into place? The writers have done a phenomenal job of keeping us engaged.

Dutch's confrontation with Khlyen went as badly as you'd expect. It was interesting that his one weakness was Dutch herself. Is she royalty?

Dutch: I have been wracking my brain every day since I left you trying to figure out your weakness until I realized... it's me. Isn't it?
Khlyen: Put down the needle.
Dutch: Shut up. This is what it feels like. I want you to know what it feels like to not be in control.
Khlyen: Was it wrong of me to protect you all these years?
Dutch: You changed me.
Khlyen: Exactly, they were making you a victim. I made you a weapon. Now you tell me I was wrong Yala.

Once John triggered the alarms, he and D'av made it back to Lucy fairly quickly. I knew Dutch would be staying behind, thanks to Syfy's spoilery teaser. Khlyen told her he was sending her home, but she resurfaced on Westerly. Where was she for those four missing hours? Khlyen confessed he was training her to be a RAC agent all along, but what is the RAC? I liked that it was the Level 5 warrant (D'av's kill job) that told Khlyen she was ready. Everything just ties together so nicely.

It was tough watching Lucy initiate "freebird" and depart the station. That's what makes these guys a great team. They put their lives on the line for one another. "I only want to killjoy with you," John told Dutch. That moment was heart-wrenching. It's amazing how much we've come to care for these characters in just nine episodes.

Khlyen is Level 6! Were you expecting that twist? He did say the team would suffer no repercussions, but what exactly is coming? Clearly it's more than just the civil war brewing, right? What are your theories? Hit me up in the comments below.

Speaking of the civil war, Alvis turned himself in to Hills. Though The Company was clearly framing him for the Leith massacre, the Killjoys will come to his rescue.

This was another really solid episode. What did you think of "Enemy Khlyen"? Do you feel like you understand Khlyen better now? What is the RAC? Is Dutch royalty? Is Turin dead? Your turn Killjoys fanatics, go ahead and sound off in the comments below.

You know you want to sit down and check this one out again. Remember you can watch Killjoys online via TV Fanatic. Make sure you're all caught up before the big season finale.

NOTE: Killjoys Season 1 Episode 10 is titled “Escape Velocity” and airs on Friday, August 21.
