The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Episode 2 Review: The Separation Oscillation

at .  Updated at .

Something has to change.

It feels as though we're in a transitional period with The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Episode 2 as Penny and Leonard figure out life as newlyweds, and Sheldon and Amy deal with their recent break-up.

The good news is that Penny and Leonard actively seek to save their relationship, and they do it successfully. Leonard shows he's willing to do whatever it takes, whether it's trying to sign up for marriage counseling (okay, it's too expensive) or asking the girl he kissed years ago if she'd ease his new wife's mind.

It even seems as though there's a greater purpose to this storyline, which is to remind us of the fundamental differences between Penny and Leonard, and the ways that might sometimes be difficult for each of them.

Leonard: Penny, after all these years, I still feel like maybe I don't deserve you.
Penny: Okay, that is the lamest excuse you could have possibly come up with. But I get it.
Leonard: You do?
Penny: Yeah. Sometimes I worry I'm gonna wake up, and you're going to leave me for someone like you.

It's important not to lose sight of those differences now that Penny and Leonard are married. The original premise of the show, after all, was the contrast between Penny and the nerds across the hall. It isn't just Leonard who can feel like he's out of his league, here. It's come up in the past but Penny can feel that way just as much.

Hopefully, now that they've moved past it, and we've all learned that Leonard can sometimes manage to say exactly the right thing at the right time, we'll get to see the couple enjoy married life.

What I think we're all a little sick of is the whole thing with Sheldon and Amy. Sheldon does want Amy back, but he's going about it in the worst possible way – by saying terrible things to get her attention. Somehow, this break up has also made Sheldon the perfect vehicle for dirty jokes that don't really have a place.

What I'd like to see come of this break up is for Amy to shine, but to be this angry person who comes to the apartment just to yell. There's an opportunity here for some character development, and I hope it's used well in future episodes.

Another opportunity will be, of course, for Sheldon to grow, and to learn a little something more about relationships. Ultimately, his heart is in the right place, he just has no idea how to deal with it.

The show must go on, and thankfully all the things my girlfriend used to do can be taken care of with my right hand.
