The Originals Season 3 Episode 1 Review: For The Next Millennium

at .  Updated at .

Are we in for another season of family drama?

If The Originals Season 3 Episode 1 is to be believed, then yes. Now, that's not to say there weren't some new villains thrown into the mix. There were and it looks like Jason Dohring is going to be the pain in every Mikaelson's ass this year.

He plays a snarky new cop who enlists Cami to help him out with some brutal murders. What is it about men in power going after her? She's Klaus' confidante, and it looks like she's going to play the same to Will. It is nice to see Jason back on TV.

His character is a far cry from what he's played in the past, so it should be good to see him grow even more as an actor. He's got this!

Freya is playing quite the doting aunt, right? For a woman that had a horrible start to life, she's sure pulling out all the stops to be with her family. She's also rocking a brand new hair style. Freya was getting a bit tedious towards the end of The Originals Season 2, so I'm glad that she's been rendered more likeable this time round.

Things have changed in the Quarter. The truce that Marcel and Klaus formed still stands. It's not very often that truces stay in place in this town, so that was good to see for a change. We also got to see Marcel and Elijah sparring. I'm sure in that moment a lot of fans were screaming at their TV sets.

It wouldn't be The Originals without some family flashbacks, and they delivered. They introduced another new character to us before we met him in the present day. That new character just happens to be the first person the Mikaelson clan sired many, many moons ago.

That man is Lucien. Yes, he's easy on the eyes. Rebekah took pity on him. I just wish that we'd have gotten to see Claire Holt be a more permanent fixture in the Quarter. I get that she wants to do other stuff, but a fan can still dream, right? He brought with him that shocking revelation about the sire lines. Is this the season of the sire lines?

Davina was finding it difficult to come to terms with her status in the Quarter, and it was clear that some of the witches weren't ready to let her lead them. I was a little shocked that no leads were killed off in the premiere. Wouldn't it have been a good idea to off someone in a shocking manner to set the stage for the twisty season ahead? If yes, Davina's number should have been up.

The ninth ward coven thinks I'm a vampire sympathiser. I won't prove them right.

Davina

Like the season finale, Hayley didn't have much time on screen, but that can be attributed to her current predicament. You can thank good old Klaus for that one. Elijah will stop at nothing to get her back to being the mother of Hope, but the family drama will probably kick back into high gear if she returns for her child.

"For the Next Millenium" was a very transitional opener. It was busy showing us how everyone has changed since they faced a certain death at the conclusion of the sophomore run. They tried to put as much as they could in the hour, and it showed. They need to dial it back a little over the next few episodes and give these new characters time to shine.

Other notes of interest:

  • Vincent really grew on me. I was very against him because the role he was playing when he was initially introduced, but with some added wit, he became rather intriguing
  • Thirstdays on The CW was an excellent idea. I've longed for The Vampire Diaries and The Originals combo since the spin-off was picked up. Now can we get some crossover events?
  • It must be freaking horrible for Hayley. Imagine only being able to see your kid for one day a month? Klaus Mikaelson, you are a bad, bad guy!
  • Is anyone else getting sick of hearing the phrase, "Always and forever"? It's been said way too much on the show!
  • Did anyone else's heart sink when Klaus gave Cami a sneak peek at his art? It's so easy for Klaus to open up to this chick!

Over to you, fanatics? What did you think of the new direction the show is heading? Will we see the original Rebekah in this timeline soon?
