15 Characters Who Deserve More Screen Time

at .  Updated at .

As we continue our year in review, we're looking at characters who could have made good work of more juicy stories.

They were underutilized, some of them mere backgrounds when they are, in fact, leads. Try to find good photos of them in their current season and you'll see what we mean.

Others are just so good we think they should be featured a lot more often.

Take a look a the list now!

1. Alex Karev - Grey's Anatomy

Alex Karev from Grey's Anatomy. He's one of the best characters and one of the few originals remaining, yet he does not get the screen time he deserves. Grey's keeps bringing in unnecessary new characters instead of featuring the great ones they already have. Alex should be saving babies while providing advice and sarcastic comments on a regular basis. Instead, he's pushed to the sidelines more often than not.

2. Castiel - Supernatural

Castiel on Supernatural. It feels like there are obvious storylines that Cas can have, especially with God and the Darkness being such a huge focus in Season 11, and yet they've sidelined their resident heavenly being to bingeing on various Netflix shows or being absent altogether. It's really been disheartening because Castiel has so much potential as a character and has played such a vital role in the past on Supernatural. We'd almost rather they just ditch him altogether than to continue watching him fade into oblivion or get jerked around with bad side plots.

3. Angela - Bones

Angela on Bones. It seems that Angela used to be a more integral part of the story and of Brennan's life than she has been lately. She's such an interesting character, and we'd like to see her do more than analyze images on a special computer.

4. Betsy Ross

Betsy Ross on Sleepy Hollow. When we first saw Nikki Reed listed in the credits as a main character we thought Ichabod would be championing another hero from our past as she tries to survive in the 21st century. Sadly, Betsy Ross is only seen in flashbacks and many episodes seem to use the SAME flashback scene, thwarting any idea of seeing her character develop.

5. Matt Donovan - The Vampire Diaries

As always, Matt Donovan. The guy is literally the last remaining human in Mystic Falls, and he STILL can’t catch a decent storyline. He DID get a new job, however, but with no one to patrol/police, what good is being a cop? As much as we love Zach Roerig’s beautiful blue eyes, Matt should’ve headed west and joined Jeremy and Tyler on their vampire hunting expeditions.

6. Peyton - iZombie

Peyton on iZombie. The show clearly has so many ideas for what they want to do with her. They keep introducing new intriguing plot points for her. Plus she has amazing chemistry with basically everyone – and then she disappears for episodes at a time! She needs to be brought on as a series regular; this recurring status is just not cutting it.

7. Bash - Reign

Bash has really gotten the short end of the stick on Reign this year. Not only did his only good love interest bail for parts unknown (Seriously, where the hell is Kenna this season? It's getting weird), he's also been given a strange, who-done-it? subplot that keeps him separate from pretty much the entire rest of the cast at all times.

8. Laurel Lance/Black Canary - Arrow

Laurel on Arrow gets the short end because she's the Black Canary, dammit. She was forced to wait it out while a new origin story that PEOPLE HATED was created and then, even after she managed to fight her way out of the pit that was dug for her, the stories written on her behalf are awful and not worthy of such a momentous heroine. If she's ever to be accepted and acknowledged, the writing needs to sway in her favor. Her dues have been paid.

9. Tex - The Last Ship

Tex on The Last Ship. John Pyper-Ferguson plays a fan favorite character as Tex, but he didn't get nearly enough screen time in Season 2. Sure, he had some good one liners and action scenes, but it would have been nice to see more – especially since we got to meet his daughter!

10. The Mothers - The Big Bang Theory

Leonard and Sheldon's mothers on The Big Bang Theory. Both Christine Baranski who plays Leonard's mom and Laurie Metcalf who plays Sheldon's are great actresses, and aren't on enough. It's even better when they are on together since their characters are polar opposites. It probably isn't possible for them to be on much more than they are, but we can hope.

11. Rebekah Mikaelson - The Originals

Rebekah Mikaelson. Every time we get her back in any iteration at all, it’s not long before she’s daggered, stabbed, sent away, or otherwise incapacitated. It’s getting tiring to watch a character we all love dearly be so incredibly misused by the writers. Rebekah should be more than a plot device.

12. Sean Renard - Grimm

Sean Renard from Grimm. Sasha Roiz is a fantastic actor, and we've seen him do some great things with his past story lines, but so far in Season 5 he's been given very little to do besides sit behind his desk and looking concerned. This is the same Renard who went and chopped off a Reaper's ear with his own scythe just to make a point back in Season 1! Please, Grimm writers, don't let the Captain fall by the wayside!

13. Dr. Lanie Parish - Castle

Dr. Lanie Parish on Castle. We’re in Castle season 8 and yet we know so very little about Dr. Lanie Parish and there’s no excuse for it. She’s been on since the pilot episode. She’s Kate Beckett’s best friend even if their scenes together (outside of crime scenes) are few and far between. Lanie is smart and feisty and deserves her own story arc. Even having Alexis as her intern could have expanded both characters but it went no where. Granted, this entire season of Castle is a complete mess so far and now they’ve added new characters who have gotten plenty of screen time while Dr. Parish has been left by the wayside yet again. We call foul!

14. Darryl Whitefeather - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Darryl Whitefeather on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. We expected a lot more appearances and story for Darryl. He's Rebecca's wacky boss, yet we feel like we just don't see him in action nearly enough. Aside from one episode where he fought for custody of his daughter, he's really only had a one-liner here and there. Give this 1/8 Chippewa his due and get him in the spotlight!

15. Cary Agos - The Good Wife

Remember when Cary Agos was Alicia's partner, and we were all excited because that meant good stories for him, finally? Well, yeah, he's now a named partner of that same firm, but Alicia is no longer, so the action followed her. What remains is a bunch of OTHER lawyers fighting for screen time. The best news is Alicia's new pal has buddied up to Cary as an after work drinking and dancing fellow. Maybe more good times are ahead? Cary has never been fully developed and after six years, a jail sentence and named partnership, we'd really like to see that change.
