You, Me and the Apocalypse Season 1 Episode 10 Review: End of Days

Well. That was dark. For a second there, I thought You, Me and the Apocalypse Season 1 Episode 10 was going to deliver a benign and predictable season finale.
We saw everyone we cared about end up in the bunker, just like it was shown from the very beginning. It seemed like this whole season was simply tracing everyone's steps in a dramatic retelling of the end of the world.
In fact, as the ending seemed nigh, I was slightly disappointed that there was really nothing new that we learned as the season came to a close. We were simply back at the beginning.
Boy, was I wrong. The moment when we saw Jamie, naked and bruised, crawling towards the bunker, was truly a gut-wrenching scene. Ariel tricked everyone once again. The idea that Jamie is going to die in such a manner is absolutely horrifying.
It was a terrific one-two punch on the writers' part, although I'm not sure what exactly the endgame was in a storytelling sense.
From the very beginning, the show had difficulty finding its tone. It presents itself as part comedy, part drama. However, the two never really meshed well together. It was never quite funny enough to be earn its whimsical moments. However, the show also never really committed to its dramatic scenes either.
Instead, more often than not, the viewers are left feeling only slightly entertained. Because we were given the end scene at the bunker at the very beginning, most of the dramatic tension was taken out of the show.
Woah, have I become the voice of reason now? Marriage has changed me.

Each episode was a deeper insight into the characters, but since we already knew their fate, it didn't really make sense to invest in the characters or their motivations.
But with this shocker of an ending, the writers have proved that the slow, somewhat tedious trudge through each life of the characters was fodder for this one, emotional moment.
But to what end? What was You, Me and the Apocalypse really about? It had seemed at times that it was going to be a fun romp through the end times, while superficially examining how different people around the world would behave if their lives were ending.
But now it seems that the entire season was one long build-up to a dark punchline. We are led now to believe that the good guys ultimately lose to the bad.
Jude was betrayed, Rashesh sacrificed himself, Rhonda went over to the dark side, and finally Ariel beat Jamie once and for all.
There were also a lot of subplots that were introduced, but never really went anywhere. Jamie fulfilling his role as son of God appeared randomly, and was gone just as quickly.
And you'd think if he really was the messiah, he'd be able to defeat Ariel in some way at the end. He was desperate enough, wasn't he?
Celine and Jude were hardly given any resolution either. Her vision from God was simply forgotten by the end, replaced by the new revelation that she was pregnant.
Oh, we had a chicken like you once. We cut off its head and ate it.
Frankie
Frankie's divinity was also ignored. It was clear that she heard a voice that sounded a lot like Jamie's. So, was it Jamie? Was it God? Was Celine's vision of God real? Who was the woman in the crate? There are so many questions left unanswered.
The show gave us a truly bleak outcome, and I'm not sure they earned this downer ending. With no plans of a second season, we are simply left with the triumph of evil, and a bad taste in our mouths.
