Doris Roberts, Emmy-Winning Star of Everybody Loves Raymond, Dies at 90

The television world has lost a beloved icon.

Doris Roberts, best known for having played the title character's mother on Everybody Loves Raymond throughout the duration of its popular run, died Sunday in Los Angeles.

She was 90 years old.

Roberts, a native of St. Louis, enjoyed a 20-plus year career on Broadway before making the move to television in the 1970s.

She won five Emmy Awards overall, four of them for her aforementioned role on Everybody Loves Raymond and the other for playing a homeless woman in a guest appearance on St. Elsewhere.

The veteran actress also appeared in a number of movies, including National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

Her most recent sitcom role was that of Sofia on three episodes of Melissa & Joey.

Roberts is survived by her son Michael Cannata Jr., from her first marriage, and three grandchildren.

The cause of death is not known at this time.

"Truly the end of an era. My wonderful TV mother-in-law and ELR nemesis Doris Roberts was a consummate professional from whom I learned so much," said Patrica Heaton in response to the news.

"She was funny and tough and loved life, living it to the fullest. Nothing gave her greater joy that her three wonderful grandchildren, of whom she was so proud.

"It truly was a privilege Doris. I love you and miss you."
