Queen of the South: Renewed for Season 2 with New Showrunner

at .

Queen of the South has been renewed.

The series, which will air its first season finale on September 8, has been garnering a steady audience of a little over 2 million viewers in live+7, half of which are in the coveted demo.

It's been cable's number one program throughout its run.

A Test of Loyalty - Queen of the South

Queen of the South stars Alice Brage as Teresa Mendoza, Verónica Falcón as Camila Vargas, Justina Machado as Brenda Parra, Peter Gadiot as James Valdez, Hemky Madera as Pote Galvez and Gerardo Taracena as Cesar “Batman” Guemes.

Telemundo first adapted the book upon with the show is based, La Reina Del Sur, and it was a massive success.

The actress who plays Teresa Mendoza in the Telemundo version, Kate Del Castillo, found herself implicated in the El Chapo saga this past January, bringing some attention to the title before USA had a chance to bring its series to air.

The series follows the story of Teresa, who after becoming involved in drug-running with her boyfriend, is forced to go on the run to America after he is murdered.

A Dangerous Mission - Queen of the South

Teresa becomes allies with an unlikely person from her past, and together they fight to bring down the very drug ring she is trying to escape.

Queen of the South Season 2 will come with some changes.

Scott Rosenbaum  is out as showrunner, and taking his place is veteran writer-producer Natalie Chaidez, who is known for her work on 12 Monkeys.

She also created and executive produced Hunters, which aired last season on Syfy, but was not renewed after the first season.

Chaidez is not a stranger to the folks at USA Network, having previously worked on both Necessary Roughness and In Plain Sight.

Queen of the South is part of USA Network's recent rebranding.

Beating Mr. Robot

They have moved away from their "blue skies" programming and onto darker, edgier programming.

Their last holdout from the blue skies era, Royal Pains, aired its series finale earlier this summer.

Other series making a mark with the edgier programming include Mr. Robot (recently renewed for Season 2), Colony, and upcoming series Falling Water and Eyewitness.

Other USA series include Suits and Shooter, the latter of which has been delayed coming to air twice so far, but is based on the movie of the same name.

Queen of the South Quotes

You could say that I am living proof that the American dream is alive and well.

Teresa

My name is Teresa Mendoza. I am from Mexico. I was born poor, not that that's bad but take it from me, I've been poor and I've been rich. Rich is better.
