From Dusk Till Dawn Season 3 Episode 9 Review: Matanzas

at .

Saddle up, ramblers, it's time for a western shootout.

On From Dusk Till Dawn Season 3 Episode 9 we enter the wild, wild, west. Well, not really, but thematically that's where we're at. We've traded in our horror/slasher movie vibes for abandoned saloons, and I like it.

From Dusk Till Dawn never shies away from genre, and it is one of the things that makes the show so great. It's always fun to change things up and spend an episode in an abandoned mental hospital or in a ghost town. These change ups create stellar episodes, and you can't help but get excited whenever you realize the show is dipping its toe into another genre.

Taking a break - From Dusk Till Dawn

This hour is very much just a lead in to the finale. Everyone is getting into position for the final showdown. It's still an hour full of insane shoot outs and character deaths, so it wasn't boring by any means.

Okay, there's one thing about the ritual that gave Amaru her body back that I do not understand. Why did Amaru need a mother and child? She was looking for one back in From Dusk Till Dawn Season 3 Episode 5, so it's not like she chose Margaret and Billie just to get to Freddie.

Unless their part comes in later, the only thing that comes to mind is that Margaret had to be the one to drop the amulet into the tub of ashes and blood. Why? No idea but that is all Margaret did. It's also unclear why Margaret's eyes are red...

Of course, Amaru is only halfway there. She's back in her own body, but she still needs to open the gates of hell part of her plan. Perhaps Margaret and Billie will be play a part in that.

But hey, Kate is finally free of Amaru! Yeah, she's currently unconscious due to the blood loss, but we got our Kate back! Hopefully, we explore if Kate can live without Amaru because when Amaru's blood crawled into Kate, Kate was dead.

Amaru could have restored Kate's body, and so aside from the blood loss, Kate could be okay. The other alternative is that Amaru's blood was the only thing keeping Kate alive. What's your theory?

Even though I haven't seen most of the movies Richie and Seth reference, I love their movie banter. I should probably make a list of every movie the two of them have referenced and watch all of them.

The A Team - From Dusk Till Dawn Season 3 Episode 9

The brothers trying to think of a movie that doesn't end in everyone dying is a great way to lighten up the mood. Quoting movies is a way for them to remove themselves from the severity of the situation and make it more lighthearted, like it's a game. That's why the two of them keep insisting that the other pick a movie that doesn't end in death.

When Richie commented that there may not be a freeze frame in it for them, my heart broke. The Geckos don't do heart to hearts. There's no sentimental chats between the two of them, so Richie goes to a movie reference to share his fear that they might die and that he might not ever see his brother again.

Guys, Zolo is totally going to be loyal to Richie now.

Brasa earned Zolo's loyalty when he beat Zolo in a fight. Well, Richie beat Zolo in a fight, and Brasa is dead, so Richie just got himself a badass warrior under his control. Team Gecko could really use all the help it can get, and it will be interesting to see Richie and Zolo on the same side. They have a fun little rapport.

Zolo - From Dusk Till Dawn Season 3 Episode 9

Okay, what was going on with Burt?

He acted off the entire hour. My only guess is that he was haunted by the last Xibalban war, but it was never made clear. It would make sense if he was flashing back to the war he barely survived. Burt often commented on how none of the team was really ready for war. Still, it would have been nice to delve into whatever was going on inside that head of his.

Instead, we just got Burt acting really strange, gazing off, and then sabotaging Scott and Sex Machine. Considering he died at the end, it would have been nice to know what was going on in his head. Burt was a great character, and it's a shame that his last episode did not do him justice. Share your favorite Burt moment in the comments below!

Richie: Draw their fire from the church just so we get shot at?
Seth: A key component of that is not getting hit.
Richie: If you were a little more durable, maybe I wouldn't have to take as many bullets for you!
Seth: Yeah, well, we all have our weaknesses, don't we?

What did you think of the episode? Is anyone else hoping that Amaru kills off Sex Machine in the finale? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

From Dusk Till Dawn Season 3 Episode 9 Quotes

Seth: If something goes wrong, if we get held up, I'm trusting you to finish her off.
Kisa: Finish off Kate?
Seth: Yeah.

When Amaru walks among us, the gateway will open. Hell will consume us.
