Supergirl Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Crossfire

WOW. Supergirl is really on fire this year, you guys!
Supergirl Season 2 Episode 5 had pretty much everything you could ask for. It had a solid case of the week that tied in very well with the overall arc of the season, humor and a whole bunch of twists that have me sitting here debating whether to start a campaign to get The CW to give us more than 22 episodes this season.
We'll start of with Lena Luthor. She's genuinely such a difficult character to read. Here I was, thinking the only reason both Kara and Supergirl got invites to the party was so that Lena could distinguish whether Kara could really be Supergirl.
It would have been a good plan if that was the case, but it's now crystal clear things are not quite adding up with Lena. She comes across as a really nice person, but they're usually the ones who emerge as the ultimate villains. I mean, her mother is the woman who has been causing a lot of drama throughout Supergirl Season 2.
For now, Brenda Strong's character seems like she does not have a name. With Lena being adopted into the Luthor family at just 4-years-old, are we to assume that her mother orchestrated the adoption to get her daughter where she is today? It would not be the worst of plans.
Her mother did give that big reveal about why she was doing what she was doing. She seemed to mutter something about her kids, so maybe. However, at the fundraiser, Lena was most certainly working against the men who her mother sent.
Why else would she find a way to stop the weapons from working in order to have them arrested? Details are super sketchy right now about what the heck is going on, but I guess we're just going to have to be patient to watch this slow burn continue.
The weapons Brenda's character had access to, had the potential to rough Supergirl up pretty good, but it remains to be seen whether Supergirl will be protected from them in the future. It seems like Supergirl and Lena are actually able to get along now that Kara/Supergirl knows Lena was only trying to catch the villains.
Catching villains is no easy task, so I have no idea why James seems to think he can cut it as a superhero. It's evident the writers struggled to find some things for his character to do on Supergirl Season 1, so this seems like the first step to proving the character deserves to stick around the show.
Winn was totally right to be against the idea of James going out on the streets with no powers. Winn understands just how scary things can get on the street, so he's looking out for his friend. In Winn's eyes, he probably felt like James was committing suicide, but upon reflecting on what James said, he kind of got on board with it.
I definitely thought the next character in line to get a costume would be Mon-El. I mean a superhero costume -- not Kara dressing him up in geek chic to impress everyone at CatCo.
It was a good idea to find him something to do that didn't involve him complaining about going out. Kara really felt a sense of obligation to help him out and he should be thankful to have someone as patient as her in his life.
Obviously, they're not meant to get along, but both characters just have so much chemistry together that I would be surprised if the series didn't try to go the romantic route with them.
Unlike Kara, Mon-El is very lazy. He didn't seem to want to do anything that didn't involve his powers unless it involved sex. Eve was immediately smitten with him, but that scene in which she asked him if he had protection was so damn funny.
Eve: Do you have protection?
Mon-El: Do you mean like a sword?
The addition of Chris Wood as Mon-El has been a welcome one. He's part of the reason why the show is flying higher creatively than ever before and I can't wait to see what becomes of his character.
Elsewhere, Alex continued to battle her feelings for Maggie. She's understandably apprehensive about her feelings and what it would mean to admit them.
Maggie is just out of a relationship, so I don't see much in the way of a long-term romance on the horizon for both of them. It would be great if there was, but they've barely known each other five minutes.
Hopefully, both women can work things out and be that amazing couple we know they can be.
"Crossfire" was another solid episode of this hit drama series. All of the plots are in full swing and I can't wait to see what's next for our favorite characters.
Stray Thoughts:
- It was a nifty trick to remotely kill the villains. It reminded me of the kill switch on Nikita.
- Winn and James getting jealous of Mon-El and Kara dancing was pretty great. How would they both react to a potential pairing?
- Alex and Winn chatting about relationships was another strong moment.
- Eve seemed completely desperate to impress Mon-El. He just did not understand the concept of what meant to work.
