The Big Bang Theory Season 10 Episode 8 Review: The Brain Bowl Incubation

What could have been endearing becomes incredibly awkward on The Big Bang Theory Season 10 Episode 8.

I've been dying to see something new happen for Raj. Lately, he's been a sidekick and nothing more, and not even in a good way. This episode finally gives him a chance to do something outside of being the third wheel to Bernadette and Howard, and it's almost sweet.

Except that instead, it's actually uncomfortable.

Sheldon Wants to Procreate - The Big Bang Theory

Though maybe that's the point. Raj has a crush on the janitor he meets working late one night, but on more than one occasion proves that he doesn't know how to deal with her job. There's a clear class difference, and he doesn't handle it well at all.

His intentions are good. He wants to be helpful, even though he admits he has actually never cleaned a toilet in his life. Seriously.

And when the rest of the gang realizes he's interested in someone (because, broccoli), he lets them believe she's an astronomer rather than a janitor. In that moment, he's ashamed of the truth.

His dinner gesture is endearing. He certainly puts some thought and effort into pursuing this woman, and that's worth something. He dresses up, he cooks, he sets a table, and even cleans a few rooms for her so she'll have the extra time.

You know what else? I often talk about how Sheldon has grown over the years. I even talked about the ways that Howard has matured. But we have to realize how much Raj has developed, as well.

Remember when he couldn't talk to women unless he had alcohol?

Meanwhile, Sheldon and Amy are working on an experiment in which they combine their skin cells in order to grow brain cells. It's successful, at least as far as they can tell.

In fact, it's so successful that Sheldon thinks they should take a new step forward.

Sheldon: And you realize what the next step is.
Amy: Set up a second culture and try to replicate our results.
Sheldon: Uh, no. We lock that door, lower our underpants a little, and make a baby.

Leave it Sheldon to choose the most logical reason, and most logical time (he's been tracking Amy's cycle!) to try and have a baby.

It's Amy who isn't quite on board with that idea yet, even though Sheldon is doing his best to seduce her. I'd say this was out of character, but Sheldon's inspiration for the idea is realizing that he and Amy could have incredibly intelligent offspring.

All thanks to some skin cells.

I have to admit, that's something I'd enjoy seeing down the road, but I'm more interested in the idea that, for once, it's Sheldon who wants to take a new step, and Amy is the one who isn't ready.

Other Thoughts:

  • Tootsie Rolls dipped in Nutella? That might just be crazy enough to try.
  • I really like Isabella. As much as I think Raj says and does some awkward things in this episode, I hope she's willing to stick around for a while.
