The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 3 Review: The Woman Behind the Clothes

On The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 3, some new topics were tackled that felt a little familiar, maybe because they were based on events that we've seen online and may have even fallen victim to ourselves.
Kat's struggle with online trolling and stalking hit very close to home. Combine that with Jane's subtle Thigh High politics, and you've got a day in the life of a woman online.
Sutton's committed attempts to go after her dream job was the perfect continuation in her path to happiness.
Kat's cold introduction to online trolling was every bit as realistic as it would be just heading over to Twitter and checking the mentions of the Doctor Who reveal.
It's sexist and very terrifying when you consider how threatened some people are by strong women trying to call out this behavior.
But Kat took it it all in without breaking a sweat, not even looking concerned because we really do live at a time when it is all a bit too common. And as frustrating as it was to see Kat not worried about her own safety, it is easy to forget that the internet could be a real threat.
As someone who experienced online trolling and borderline stalking at one point, the situation is every bit as scary as Kat came to realize. There is no way to stop it and engaging makes it worse, a mistake that I made as well.
Seeing Kat kind of go through all those motions and come out more accomplished in her initial VR project for Scarlet was every bit as inspiring as I thought it would be.
And I loved that Kat sharing a topless picture of herself was never a shameful thing.
The fact that someone took it and published it to make fun of her was disgusting, but that was it. The person at fault was the troll online and there was no victim shaming because Kat didn't do anything wrong and didn't deserve any of the abuse that she ended up receiving.
The show that spreads this type of message is the one that I want to support and continue to experience.
Now, I actually wasn't sure if this VR causing motion sickness based on hormones idea was real but it actually seems to be. Not being a big tech person this might have gone over my head, yet how was this not a bigger deal?
Kat shining a light on this was every bit as important as us actually discussing this afterward. Was this weird side effect ever worked out?
As for Adena and Kat, not seeing them wasn't great, but I don't think there was time for that regardless. This was something Kat had to work through, and her feelings for Adena should have another whole episode dedicated to them.
But that cliffhanger of a text message definitely has me both nervous and excited for their reunion. Adena obviously broke up with her girlfriend because she can't stop thinking about Kat; I won't accept any other explanation.
It's a good start. You need to get laid.

Jane figuring out how to get the article she wanted, or an even better version of that was pretty epic. It was calculated and logical, something I don't think I would have connected the dots on as quickly as she did.
I also couldn't help noticing the thigh high boots that she was wearing when she first tried to get that interview. Is anyone getting some Teen Vogue and Lauren Duca vibes?
Even her going to meet this congresswoman about fashion benefited her because of the quote she managed to get.
Watching the progression of Jane's writing is a highlight, but I am hoping that she doesn't stress out so much about the kind of writer she thinks she should be.
Much like with Ryan, Jane seems to see writing as either romance/sex or serious writing like with political features. There should be room for both, and leaning into topics like fashion scored her a feature that is groundbreaking and unexpected.
As soon as Jane realizes that her writing is successful and meaningful because of the honesty that she applies to it, the better off she will be going forward.
This isn't to say that Jane isn't conquering the magazine as a writer now, but it seems like she worries so much about every piece she writes beforehand. And this worry is for nothing because her natural thought process always drives her to a place that she is proud of, she has to just have faith in her talent.
Now Ryan and Jane are a whole other story, mostly because I still don't know where I stand with them.
I'm thrilled that Ryan isn't the fuckboy we all thought he was set up to be, but where do we go from here?
I can't find it in me to really root for Jane/Ryan as a potential couple. Maybe it is their interactions with one another, but those two aren't working for me.
Is it too late to see some Jane and Alex happening?
Kamala Harris is the next Elizabeth Warren.
Jacqueline
Sutton working as an assistant for two people at once just so she could maybe be in the running for a position in the fashion department was such a wonderful form of inspiration.
Sutton in general is always reminding me things about my own career plans and the work that has to be put in to accomplish progress. Her path is nothing short of empowering because there are those moments of being lost or unsure, but Sutton pushes through it.
I wasn't sure why Lauren wasn't in her corner at first, as much as she seemed to be a fan of Sutton's work she didn't want to understand how important this job could be for Sutton.
It pushed Sutton out of her shell though, making her vocal about what she wants and how much she wants to get there. Ambition is in every woman on The Bold Type, reminding the girls that are watching not to give in.
Succeeding should be the end goal for all ladies that are fighting for their dream job, backing down isn't an option. But Sutton also puts so much evident hard work into her assistant job that you know how much she deserves it without anyone having to voice it.
As for Richard and Sutton, wow those two are really surprising me. Here I was, waiting for these two to pull Sutton down, but their relationship is so far from that.
Richard is supportive of Sutton's plans to climb up the ladder at Scarlet, yet he doesn't interfere or take away from it.
I'm really hoping these two can continue to make this healthy and sweet relationship work, with plenty of breadstick dates in the future!
I'm going full Hamilton on this. Because I'm the definition of young, scrappy, and hungry.

Jacqueline has been there for Jane, providing advice and supporting her as a writer at Scarlet.
Getting to see Jacqueline reaching out and encouraging Kat with her VR presentation and after the trolls found her was lovely. There is no doubt in my mind that the relationships between women on the show will continue to be realistic and promising.
You can feel how much Jacqueline cares about these ladies that work for her, she isn't just hoping they succeed at their jobs, she cares about their well-being.
It would be great to see Jacqueline reaching out to Sutton too, but something tells me that Oliver could have a big part to play instead. We don't know much about him outside of what he represents to Sutton, but there is some promise there.
He listened to her advice about adding something to an outfit, not looking down at her ideas because she isn't an actual designer. There is room to pitch ideas and to contribute, a nice reminder that Sutton, Jane, and Kat are going places with the help of the mentors around them.
I really hope he hires Sutton, obviously because I want her to follow her dreams but also to witness more interactions between the people that work at Scarlet.

The Bold Type continues to shine through, continuously bringing important topics of conversation to the table.
There is nothing that goes on that one of us hasn't experienced or will experience in the future, whether bad or good. It speaks to all different kinds of journeys and it encourages us to keep pushing forward if we want something.
Kat's voice and confidence, Sutton's ambition and determination, and Jane's courage and nerve are all traits that we can connect with.
Aspiring to be any of the wonderful ladies on The Bold Type sends the message that girls get things done, and we can't let anyone get in our way.
I can't wait to see where else this journey will go because I trust the topics to be even more important and necessary to discuss right now.
