Gotham Season 4 Episode 3 Review: They Who Hide Behind Masks

Thank goodness for fangirls.

It was quite the conundrum how The Riddler was going to escape his icy prison, but on Gotham Season 4 Episode 3, fangirl Myrtle came to the rescue.

Bruce and Alfred - Gotham Season 4 Episode 3

Myrtle was a lot of fun while she lasted even if she came out of left field. I suppose it wouldn't have made any sense to have someone we knew be the one to get him out of the ice.

For some reason, I always thought it was going to be Ivy who would be the one to free Ed, but Ivy's got bigger and better plans.

It's too bad Ed saw no use for Myrtle. She was quite devoted to him, and they could have gotten into quite a bit of trouble together. She had a lot more personality than Ms. Kringle and Isabella.

Ed could have shown her some appreciation rather than knocking her out the way he did, but I guess it was better to break from the same storyline we've already seen on Gotham before.

Still, I wouldn't have minded having Myrtle around for a couple more episodes.

Asking a Favor - Gotham Season 4 Episode 3

But now that Ed is free and walking the streets, the opportunity is ripe for him to meet up with Solomon Grundy. It's going to be interesting to see how that develops.

Bruce showed his obnoxious side this hour not only pretending to be a street kid but also when he pretended to be a bratty billionaire. I'm not sure which version made me cringe more.

The boat guys saw through Bruce's fake street kid accent and once again he got himself into more trouble than he could handle. But lucky for him that, once again, Alfred was around to save the day and save the scene from completely diving into the cheese.

At Penguin's auction, Bruce fared no better pretending to be the bratty billionaire. It was amazing that no one questioned his odd behavior. Bruce has never behaved like that in public before so what makes him think it would across as normal now?

I get what they were trying to accomplish, but it was way over the top and I was a little embarrassed about it all. Gotham can be cheesy, but these scenes were some of the worst in a long time.

R'as al Ghul - Gotham Season 4 Episode 3

Bruce and Barbara got into a bidding war for Ra's al Ghul's knife with Bruce taking home the prize for a cool $2 million. Barbara was upset but it had more to do with her fear of Ra's al Ghul than anything else, but he wasn't angry with her after learning that Bruce was the one who bought the knife.

And why, oh why, does Barbara have to be involved in another romance? I'm not feeling her and Ra's. Not. One. Bit.

I wasn't too fond of Barbara's treatment of Selina, either.. How are they going to become a powerhouse if she's telling Selina to scrub the floors because she failed to steal the knife? Maybe if Tabitha was with her she would have had better luck, but Tabitha was missing and Selina was on her own.

Selina shouldn't have to try so hard to be part of the group. Barbara was the one who invited them to be part of her business. If she was going to be such a bitch about everything maybe she should have kept it solo.

Jim made it down to Florida to seek Carmine Falcone's help, but the don was not interested in helping Jim out. Apparently, he's dying and Gotham is the last thing on his mind. It's too bad. I like Carmine, and it'll be sad to see him go when the time comes.

But it opens the door for Sophia to take on Penguin with Jim even if Carmine doesn't think she's ready yet.

Meeting Sophia - Gotham Season 4 Episode 3

It seemed like it was love at first sight when he saw her after he arrived. He couldn't take his eyes off her. Maybe she reminded him of Lee. And it didn't take her long to show him she was interested.

Of course, she was going to come to Gotham. She's been itching to put her training to good use, and Jim gave her the perfect opportunity. I'm looking forward to seeing how she and Jim will work together to bring Penguin down.

And to see how long their little romance will last. Given Jim's history, all it will take is for Lee to show up and it'll be bye-bye Sophia.

Sophia isn't the only newbie in Gotham. There's also detective Harper, and the only question I have is why? Why do we need a Detective Harper?

"They Who Hide Behind Masks" was a mixed bag. A great storyline was introduced with Sophia Falcone and The Riddler is free, but we had to suffer through a cheesy Bruce Wayne not once, but twice.

Over to you. What did you think of "They Who Hide Behind Masks"? Did you cringe at Bruce's performances? Were you surprised about Myrtle?
