Supergirl Round Table: Girl Power

Kara and her team of super-powered women embarked on a mission to learn more about Reign on Supergirl Season 3 Episode 11

Sadly, not everyone made it out of the mission alive.

Below, TV Fanatics Jay Ruymann, Andy Behbakht, Kathleen Wiedel, and Christine Orlando discuss Livewire's untimely demise, Alex the babysitter, and the reveal of two more Worldkillers.

What did you think of the SuperWomen team up? Will you miss Livewire?

Jay: No, I don’t think so. Livewire’s entire shtick in Supergirl Season 1 was how much she hated Cat Grant, and it didn’t make sense to return to the villain when her nemesis is no longer on the show. I think Livewire’s death was unnecessary—as it could have provided an ample opportunity to get Cat Grant back to National City.

As for the team up, I think the writers need to figure out whose powers are more powerful. Imra was basically useless on this mission, as was Psi (until the end), while Livewire got all of the action and her dying for Supergirl didn’t quite make sense, still, even after their heart to heart.

Andy: I hope The CW took some notes from this episode and learned that female characters teaming up is actually pretty cool! I really enjoyed that aspect of the episode for sure. I was sad about Livewire's exit, even though I am sure they can bring her back to whatever comic book ways they want, should they want to bring her back in the future.

Someone pointed out to me that Livewire dying gave the mission some serious stakes so, from that angle, I can appreciate her death which got to be a little heroic.

Kathleen: I found the reasoning for the team-up silly. Radiation that somehow only attacks Y chromosomes? What, do Y chromosomes have magic blue star radiation magnets?

The team-up itself was enjoyable enough and provided some interesting character fodder for both Supergirl and Mon-El at the end. I was surprised Livewire died, though I agree with Andy that her sudden demise did create stakes for the team, even if up until her death she was considered a villain.

Christine: I loved the women teaming up, and thought it was even more interesting because two of them were villains. We never really knew when one of them might turn on the rest and it was a nice surprise when that never happened.

This was actually the first time that I enjoyed Livewire, so I was sad to see her go, but I agree that her death added some gravitas to the mission.

Do you want to see Psi again? Do you think she and/or Imra could be hiding something?

Jay: I think Psi was genuinely confused when her powers went off, and I think it was something to do with Imra’s powers since she’s telepathic. Could she drain the mental energy of those around her to utilize her powers? I’m thinking that could be something worth investigating. As for seeing Psi again, I think we’ve seen enough of her.

Andy: I am always down for Psi showing up because, duh, Petra from Jane the Virgin on a comic book show, you can't go wrong with that.

Kathleen: I definitely think we'll see Psi again, and I would be completely unsurprised if either Psi or Imra had something else going on from the way things happened. I like Jay's idea and agree that it's worth investigating further.

Christine: I loved when Psi infiltrated Reign’s mind and got to her worst nightmare, which was really Sam’s. I hope they bring her back because her power could be used as a really intriguing tool if turned against the World Killers.

How long until someone figures out Sam is Reign? Who do you think will figure it out first, Kara by getting through to Reign, or Alex by figuring out the cause of Sam's blackouts?

Jay: Psi’s attack on Reign and Sam’s confession to Alex is definitely a big step toward revealing the truth. Who will put it together though? I don’t think Kara or Alex will; I think it’s going to be Winn, or Brainiac 5, or maybe even Imra who reveals the truth because Kara, Alex, and Lena won’t want to see it.

Andy: Like Barry figured out on his own that Savitar was, well, him, on The Flash Season 3, I want Kara to be able to piece this mystery on her own. Nothing against her team, but I do want to see the Girl of Steel getting to figure something as big as this out on her own.

Kathleen: It shouldn't be long now, I hope, especially if Team Supergirl actually talks to each other enough to put the pieces together. I do hope Kara figures it out first. This is her show, after all. Furthermore, she is probably the one who cares the most about Sam as a person.

Christine: I’d love it if Kara and Alex figured it out together, maybe even throw Lena into the mix. They all care about Sam and I’m looking forward to the shock and awe they’ll experience when they finally realize that she’s Reign.

Supergirl Takes on Reign Again - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 11

Will Kara find out the other two WorldKillers before Reign does?

Jay: Doubtful. Now that Julia has arisen, it’s a matter of time before Reign is drawn to their similar powers. Maybe the last one, it’s possible, especially if Kara somehow finds a way to find them before their powers are activated.

Andy: Jay pretty much summed up my feelings on that question.

Kathleen: Let's make that three. Maybe Kara finds number three before Reign does, but I'm going with number two (seen at the end of the episode) teaming up with Reign before Kara can locate her.

Christine: Yeah, I’m hoping that Kara can get to number three, but as she hasn’t figured out that Reign is Sam yet, I’m also guessing she won’t make it to number two before Reign finds her counterpart.

Livewire is Down - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 11

What did you think of Alex's babysitting storyline?

Jay: Further foreshadowing Alex will take in Ruby if something goes awry and Sam dies in the end?

Andy: I can't stress this enough - I'm not a fan of Ruby at all. I almost feel this episode was a bit of an punishment towards Alex because while this epic female team-up is happening in space, Alex is stuck with babysitting a teenager. First of all, what teenager needs a babysitter?

I know that because Alex hurt her leg, she couldn't really take part of the action. But for her to be stuck with Ruby, was whatever to me. I will admit that Alex being the badass she is by scaring Ruby's bully was all sorts of awesome. But whatever happens to Sam, in the end, I do not want to see Alex become Ruby's adoptive mother.

Kathleen: Alex's desire for children was the wedge that drove her and Maggie apart. Here, Alex actually got to spend time with a child (teen though she was). I do wonder, though, if threatening a teenage bully with the FBI (which Alex doesn't even work for!) is a good idea.

Doesn't that just make Alex a bully towards the bully? What does her "solution" say to real-world victims of bullying? It may have been more productive to teach Ruby how to deal with the problem on her own.

Christine: I really liked Alex and Ruby, and I disagree with Andy about leaving a teen home alone for several days. In this day and age, you can’t be too careful. I thought this was a nice reminder of what drove Alex and Maggie apart. My only complaint is that I wish they’d dealt the bullying issue more realistically. That was a disappointment.

What was your favorite quote or scene?

Jay: As much as I appreciated Alex visiting the teenage girl to defend Ruby, I really enjoy Reign’s scenes in her fortress. It’s interesting, unique, and I’d love to learn more about the mythos of the WorldKillers as the season progresses.

Andy: Every comedic scene with Supergirl, Psi, Livewire, and Saturn Girl.

Kathleen: Like Andy, I really enjoyed the sniping between the SuperWomen, particularly this:

Livewire: Nice tiara.
Psi: Why don't you zap it off me and I'll show you what I can do. It would be such a delicious pleasure to bring you to your knees and watch you writhe in pain.
Livewire: Do you always talk like that?
Psi: At least I don't sound like an illiterate mean girl.
Livewire: Okay, Regina George.

Christine: I loved the interaction between the women in space. They were able to be snarky and yet still work together, plus it was just a whole lot of fun.
