The Last Man on Earth Season 4 Episode 16 Review: The Blob

at .

The Last Man on Earth delivers another solid episode of the series, with a fun, new pairing and fantastic dramatic acting from Jason Sudeikis.

On The Last Man on Earth Season 4 Episode 16, Mike wants to leave to search for the heat signature he found on his thermal reader. Meanwhile, Gail and Melissa avoid their supply shopping duties, and Erica and Todd argue over the color of the baby's nursery.

There was a lot to love about this episode, but my favorite part was the pairing of Melissa and Gail.

The two of them are rarely together, and I loved watching them team up to skirt their responsibilities to the house.

Mary Steenburgen and January Jones were great together, and I love when we get unique pairings like this.

It refreshes the show and always makes for an exciting episode.

Gail: Think that we should go to at least one store so we can honestly say we tried to look for supplies?
Melissa: No. Pull!

I would watch a whole episode of them sitting in the wilderness while Gail drinks wine out of the bottle and Melissa shoots a gun.

I especially loved seeing Jones with the shotgun because it gave me major flashbacks to Betty Draper from Mad Men Season 1 Episode 9.

All Melissa needed was the cigarette hanging out of her mouth.

Jones even posted about the Betty vibes on Instagram, which made my heart happy.

I hope it was an intentional reference by the writers since that scene from Mad Men is so iconic for Jones.

Erica and Todd arguing again - The Last Man on Earth Season 4 Episode 16

I also loved Todd's fake crying routine to guilt Melissa and Gail into searching for food, as they should have done in the first place.

While I enjoyed the scenes with Melissa and Gail, I would be pretty frustrated if they complained about what little food we had in the house and then refused to go looking for any supplies.

I just feel like I'm being lied to, you know? And it's really hurting my heart because we're all in this together, guys!

Todd

His guilt trip was hilarious and perfectly acted, and I enjoyed seeing Erica's reaction to it as well.

I figured out what he was doing as soon as he started crying.

I, too, would have definitely succumbed to the guilt if I was Melissa or Gail.

I also could not stop laughing at Carol's "attempt" to sing with Tandy.

As a kid, I always loved seeing the words turn into pretty colors on my karaoke machine.

When I saw her have the same reaction, I connected with her in a way I never have before because of her strange personality.

Carol is an oddball, and this is probably something that most people would find weird about her as well.

I, however, could not stop giggling because I have been in her shoes.

It was such a genuine moment for Carol, and I adored it.

Signs of Life - The Last Man on Earth

I am thrilled that Mike is not leaving without Tandy.

You may recall from my review of The Last Man on Earth Season 4 Episode 15 that I was devastated that he might be leaving the gang so soon.

When I saw Tandy with his luggage outside of Mike's truck, I nearly cried tears of joy.

Then, when they brought my favorite song, "Falling Slowly," back once again for the cutting of the hair montage, my heart was so happy I could hardly stand it.

I was most impressed, though, with Jason Sudeikis' dramatic acting. He is obviously a great comedic actor, but it is rare to see this side of him.

When he shared how jealous of Tandy he was, my heart broke for him.

I'm jealous of you, Phil! I'm jealous! I want what you have. You've got a wife, you know? And kids. You have a family. You have a real family. It's all I've ever wanted.

Mike

Sudeikis did an incredible job in the scene, and Will Forte's reaction was equally as painful.

Tandy has spent so much of his life being jealous of Mike's accomplishments that it never occurred to him that Mike would be envious of him.

I think this will be a major growth moment for both characters, and I am excited to see them take a road trip together in the next episode.

Overall, I have no complaints about "The Blob." This episode was incredibly fun to watch, and the 22 minutes went by so quickly.

I think the writers are propelling us towards a crazy season finale, and I am loving the journey. I look forward to seeing what else Todd discovers in that wall.
