The Originals Season 5 Episode 5 Review: Don't It Just Break Your Heart

at .  Updated at .

Just when it seemed like The Originals Season 5 was slowing down, The Originals Season 5 Episode 5 came along blew the lid off the whole thing.

While I'm still not impressed at the way Phoebe Tonkin has been sidelined, I can't deny that it's bringing some downright shocking plot twists our way.

Danielle Rose Russell has been a thrilling addition to the cast as this new, teenage version of Hope, and my heart broke for her when she was having to choose between binding herself or having her mother die.

The Moral Compass - The Originals Season 5 Episode 5

This girl is still young and does not know the full extent of her abilities, so it would have been a shame to have here werewolf part taken away.

That said, there was no way the binding was going to come to fruition. She's this powerful being and given that she's going off to lead Legacies, it would have been bizarre of her to lose a part of her being.

There's a certain naivety to Hope, and that's likely down to her age, and the fact that she feels responsible for her mother's absence.

Going off with Roman was not the best decision, but she's blinded by the thought that the vampire likes her as more than friends. While that may be the case, his family is not going to add the Mikaelsons to their Christmas cards list any time soon.

Smile Time - The Originals Season 5 Episode 5

Roman is working more than one angle, and I won't be surprised if he turns on his mother at the final hurdle.

I knew there was something off about Antoinette. On The Originals Season 5 Episode 3, her dynamic with Elijah was a breath of fresh air, but it cheapens their whole relationship knowing that they met in the 1930s.

How was Elijah expected to skip town with her when she was lying to him for seven years? Elijah was conflicted and confused when they met after his memories were wiped by Marcel, but it's bizarre that his fiancé never felt the need to confide in him.

Getting Close - The Originals Season 5 Episode 5

I'd like to believe that the photographer sniffing around confirms that Antoinette is not working with her mother or agreeing with her father's wicked way of dealing with werewolves.

If you watch The Originals online, you will already know that Greta has voiced her concern at the way things have been playing out in the French Quarter, but I was legit shocked when Roman walked out that door after Klaus killed August.

There's a lot of bad blood between the two families, but something tells me both Antoinette and Roman don't have the same horrifying views as their mother and father.

I do feel bad for Klaus that this incident from almost 100 years ago is coming back to haunt him. But taking innocent lives has been something Klaus has done since the beginning of his troubled existence.

To The Past - The Originals Season 5 Episode 5

It's about time that the tables were turned on him, but it's highly likely it's going to come at the expense of someone close to him. It's only a matter of time before everyone in New Orleans rises against the Mikaelsons again, and it could be for the last time.

Marcel is already starting to become Klaus' lost puppy again, and everyone around him is starting to notice. Klaus admitting that Marcel only ever wanted love was a bit rich when you consider that Klaus is in the same boat.

It was foolish of Marcel to think that Klaus would not somehow find out about the plan to get Freya to bind Hope. I mean, this is Klaus. He's so smart he can probably predict the future.

Add in the fact that he's one of the most calculating individuals on all of TV and has an excellent eye for body language.

The flashbacks to the 1930s were interesting because they picked up not long after the flashbacks from The Vampire Diaries Season 3, and we even had Klaus namedropping hero hair aka Stefan Salvatore.

There was a raw emotion between the brothers in the 1930s. Klaus felt like Elijah watched along as Mikael inflicted seven hells worth of pain on him, but Elijah kept a brave face and was hurting inside.

Is He Too Good to Be True? - The Originals Season 5 Episode 5

That is probably what bonded these brothers more than anything. They have both done some questionable things, but it always comes back to the family, and that could be one of few moments (at that time!) that Klaus felt like he was part of something.

My only major gripe is that Klaus never forgets a face, and I'm sure he would have noticed who, exactly, Antoinette was on The Originals Season 5 Episode 3. There's also Greta, but Klaus was not really in the same proximity as her before the big reveal.

"Don't It Just Break Your Heart" was an excellent episode of this CW drama series. This season has a different feel to it, and the new locations are helping set it apart from the other seasons.

Now, they need to find a way to get rid of the damn Hollow and then they can get back to being the most dysfunctional family on all of TV.

What did you think of the episode, The Originals Fanatics?

Were you surprised that Antoinette and Roman were Greta's children? Are the children villains, or are they working against their mother?

The Originals Season 5 Episode 5 Quotes

Elijah: You were right.
Antoinette: About?
Elijah: The feeling after sundown without the ring. It's just, the most transcendent joy.
Antoinette: I'll take credit for most of that joy.

Behind you, on the corner. Don't look. He was in the bar earlier.
