Supergirl Season 3 Episode 22 Review: Make It Reign

The DEO may be going non-lethal, but their enemies sure aren't.

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 22 saw its first casualty of this new era when Winn's fancy new shield failed to protect an agent against the Dark Kryptonians.

Now Winn is struggling with the weight of that failure.

Supergirl's Big Fight

Of course, it's not his fault the agent died. He knew the risks when he signed up for this gig, and that shield was pretty powerful. It couldn't stand up to three Kryptonians at once, but it did protect Winn from just one.

What I don't understand is why the DEO agent didn't just destroy the blood in the lab. Couldn't he have just thrown it on the floor and smashed it? Or poured it down a drain? It didn't need to be so dramatic with the agent hurling it at Kara and losing his life in the process.

Still, his death will weigh heavily on Winn, and now is not the time for his head to not be in the game.

Everyone needs to be focused on the impending doom that threatens to end the world. It was kind of James to stop by and check on Winn, but alerting the city probably should have taken precedence. I guess that was the only way they could think of to give James a minute of screen time.

Lethal or not, Alex still has the coolest guns.

Non-Lethal Gun? - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 22

Her Matrix moves might be a little ridiculous, but her fight scenes are so much fun to watch. Why did it take it so long for her to get her own suit? That magnetic glove is genius. Winn should be proud that he's kept her and James alive, even if his shield wasn't as powerful as he thought.

We all had doubts that switching to non-lethal weapons was a realistic move, so it feels more realistic that Winn's first attempt didn't work perfectly. It probably should have gone through more extensive tests before being deemed field ready.

Granted, wearing an untested shield is better than no shield at all.

Sam: Then it's settled. I'm going back to the Dark Valley.
Alex: Sam, you're took weak.
Mon-El: We don't have Brainy to get you there.
Sam: Lena was able to do it.
Lena: That was using electric shock, and in your current condition, Alex is right. I don't know if you'd survive.
Sam: That's a risk I'm willing to take if it means ending Reign and saving the world. And I have to do it for my daughter. I promise you, I am not dying today.

The question on the table has been for quite some time, "will Sam survive?"

Well, at least Sam herself is confident she'll make it. I admit I'm wavering on my initial thought that this would all end in tragedy. The notion that "the stronger Sam gets, the weaker Reign becomes" allows hope for a happy ending.

I don't know if Odette Annable is supposed to return or not, but that doesn't necessarily mean she has to die. Maybe she and Ruby will opt for a new start somewhere else after this craziness subsides.

I like having Sam around, but without Reign, I wonder what role there would be for her.

She would need to do more than work for Lena and participate in girls' night out. As enjoyable as those scenes are, it's not enough. They're barely able to give James meaningful storylines as it is.

Of course, her Kryptonian cells could indicate that she could still have powers.

J'onn was mostly out of the loop while the Dark Kryptonians were wreaking havoc, but he was experiencing inner turmoil at having to relive all of M'rynn's memories.

The Reach sounds wonderful in theory, but devastating to have to endure it.

When we lose someone, we cling to our memories with all we have. They give us comfort and help us through the hard times, so in a way, it's nice that J'onn will have all of these memories to lean on when he's missing his father.

But it also has to be so incredibly painful to relive them when he's still alive, and knowing how this process will eventually end.

We're not supposed to have to rely on those memories until after the person is already gone. It's unfortunate the Martians didn't come up with a way to transfer their memories into some sort of technology that could then be transferred into another Martian after they pass.

M'yrnn: By the end of this, you will not feel loss, J'onn. You will feel complete. I promise.
J'onn: How do you know?
M'yrnn: Because I know the hole that comes with not doing this, the way I felt when your mother was taken from me, when you were taken from me. Be patient, my son. Let the memories fill you up, as they have filled me up.

If M'yrnn dies in battle before finishing the Reach, it'll be even more heartbreaking for J'onn. At least he'll have gone out protecting his son's new home.

The other question on the table has been, "Will Mon-El and Kara get back together?"

That's a tough one too, and the Supergirl Round Table believes it's one that may not get answered until Supergirl Season 4.

Looking Concerned - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 22

That's possible, but we also saw Brainy in the promo, so there's a decent chance Imra returns with him. Will this all be settled by the end of Supergirl Season 3 Episode 23, or will we be forced to wait all summer for a resolution?

Mon-El's feelings appear to be all in on Kara, but there has to be a resolution for him and Imra first. They are still married, and that needs to be respected.

Mon-El: I lost her once, Winn. I'm not sure I can do it again.
Winn: Wow, really? Dude. Dude, forget Reign, you need to get back here fast so we can get a drink.

Whatever happens, here's hoping we get to see Mon-El and Winn have that drink!

Over to you! How do you think Reign will be stopped once and for all? Will Sam survive? Will we get a resolution to Kara and Mon-El's relationship status?
