How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 Episode 8 Review: I Want to Love You Until The Day I Die

at .

Wow. Where the heck are we going to go from here?

How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 Episode 8 was an entertaining midseason finale giving us a body and a culprit. And we even got an answer to the biggest mystery of all, the identity of Gabriel Maddox.

Yet, when ranked amongst past big reveal episodes, I'm not so sure how this one ranks. We got nearly everything we wanted, so what mysteries do we have left to solve?

Well, not many it would seem. As much as I was clamoring for answers, and make no mistake I was clamoring, having all the answers now feels a bit lackluster. I would have been okay finding out the identity of the person in the snow and saving the killer reveal for later in the season.

But that's not what we got. Instead, we got the whole shebang!

That's not to say this was a boring hour because it was far from it. The best part of these episodes is finding out how all the scenes you've already seen fit together to tell the story of one deadly evening.

Here we walked through the night from many points of view, with Bonnie's being most prominent.

You keep digging, you're going to get us all killed.

Bonnie [to Nate]

Bon-Bon has been on an emotional rollercoaster all season, but the two constant things in her life have been Annalise and Miller. They've been in a tug of war for her attention and affection, whether they even realized it and it was all bound to come to a head at some point.

Miller was making some valid points about the toxic relationship between the two women, but what he won't ever be able to understand is that their bond can't be broken.

Annalise has a pull on every single person in her orbit and for Miller proved he didn't know Bonnie at all if he thought painting Annalise as the big bad wolf was going to bring her closer to him.

Even though we saw Miller in his car, ring in hand, I never counted him out as a suspect. And for good reason. No offense to his character or portrayer, but he was expendable.

As soon as Michaela brought forth the information that the warden received a mysterious phone call on the day of Nate Senior's death, it was apparent that person was going to be exposed and possibly be the one dying in the snow.

And drumroll, please! That person is ... Ronald Miller.

Frank Considers - How To Get Away With Murder Season 5 Episode 8

Is his death shocking? Perhaps. But more shocking than that is who commits the initial crime.

On a show full of morally questionable characters, Nate has always straddled that line, but deep down he has always been characterized by good.

To say he snapped would be the understatement of the year.

Full of rage and guilt, he takes it all out on Miller, whom he now believes helped orchestrate his father's death. It's a brutal scene, as each punch lands and more and more blood splatters on the snow and Nate's suit.

The parallels between the son becoming the father weren't lost on me and moving forward it will be interesting to see how Nate reconciles those feelings. And how he and Bonnie try to get away with this crime.

Bonnie: I know what you did.
Miller: What are you talking about?
Bonnie: You had Nate's dad killed.

For Bonnie, she had a choice to make when she came upon Miller in the snow. And her initial reaction was not to yell for help. Bonnie's decions don't always make the most sense, but she usually makes them to protect other people.

Dancing Away - How To Get Away With Murder Season 5 Episode 8

What's most interesting is how defensive Miller was even when literally backed into a corner knowing that things were looking bleak. He could have thrown someone else under the bus or begged for forgiveness, but he held pat to his story and proclaimed innocence.

That leads me to ponder: what if he was telling the truth?

Someone who wasn't telling the truth this season? Mr. Gabriel Maddox.

We knew he was shady. We knew he didn't believe in smartphones. But what we didn't know was that he was Sam Keating's son.

Ta-da! The reveal begins to make sense the more you think about it, from the standpoint that he was clearly not to be trusted. And who would you trust less than someone who shares DNA with Sam Keating?

Now we're left with all the why follow-ups. Why did he infiltrate the Keating gang? Why did he want to get close to Annalise?

Perhaps I was wrong about all the mysteries being solved and put to bed. We could fill a whole season with the fallout from this revelation alone.

Everything Else You Need To Know

  • The Coliver wedding was overshadowed by all the extracurriculars, but it was beautiful. The vows were endearing, as was how nervous and fidgety they both were exchanging rings. This show is so dark, and we need to better appreciate the lighter moments.
  • And yes, Ollie was safe the whole time, warming up for his big solo!
  • Why Bonnie decided to take Christopher with her knowing she might be breaking up at the very least an argument, was not smart. And how she got that baby to sit in the snow like that all bundled up was a magic act.
  • There was slightly more context to the Pam and Asher parking lot hookup, but it's still weird, and I have a hard time thinking Connor will ever let it go.
  • So now we know why Frank was suspicious of Gabriel from the jump, but how did he make the connection to Sam by only looking at the kid? As usual, Frank holds the key to so much information.
  • Remember when we thought Gabriel was Bonnie's son? Ah, such simpler times.

And just like that, we are halfway through another strong season. I'd love to hear what all you guys thought about the finale!

Were you surprised by the big twists? What does Gabriel want from Annalise? What was your favorite moment from the Coliver wedding? What are you most looking forward to when the show returns?

Bonnie: So, you don't care about the adoption coming out? Why risk it? You just got back on your feet.
Annalise: That's cuz I fought for my life. And you better damn well know I'm gonna keep going.

Just so you know, I will have your back at the wedding. Us single girls, we gotta stick together.
