That escalated quickly.

The drama was at an all-time high in Charmed (2018) Season 1 Episode 16, and we’re still recovering from the whiplash we got while trying to keep up. 

“Memento Mori” was the darkest episode Charmed has done and provided its audience with plenty of answers.

It also gave Madeleine Mantock a chance to prove how spectacular of an actress she is.

The biggest mystery of the season has officially gotten solved. We didn’t just learn who killed Marisol; we learned how what and why, too.

It was a lot of information to take in, and although Charity murdering the Vera matriarch was a surprising twist, her motives seemed flimsy.

Is the audience meant to believe Charity when she claims to have acted in good conscience? 

That’s hard to accept, considering she was so quick to kill Marisol.

She didn’t stop to consider any other options; talking to the about Macy, or binding the sister's powers on her own being a few of them. 

Acting very rash on little information only forces the audience to turn on Charity completely.

After everything that has transpired, there's no empathy left for her character.

Even when she came face to face with Fiona, it felt like a well-deserved scolding. 

Fiona herself projects a villainous quality, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the Sarcana also ended up being a significant antagonist as well.

At this point, neither the Sarcana or the Elders seem like a viable or safe option for the sisters.

If we’re meant to pick a side, we’ll choose a third option: The Power of Three. 

That’s undeniably the best direction for the show; move away from the sisters binding themselves to any organized group.

Instead, let them exist on their own terms, and fight evil in their own way.

They’ve gotten good at it. Judging by their momentous showdown with Charity, it’s safe to say the Vera girls have all but mastered their powers.

That is peculiar, considering a thread of the entire first season has been about their struggle with becoming witches. 

The issue stems from their powers growing and changing at such lightning speed. The show would benefit from slowing down and explaining those advancements now and then.

Audiences loved watching the OG sisters struggle to get a hold on their powers. Bypassing that element of the new series feels akin to being robbed of something special.

Every time an OG sister gained a new power, there was a clear reason behind it -- an explanation as to how and why.

Charmed(2018) Season 1, while much more fast-paced and fun than it's predecessor, seems to add powers with barely any explanation at all.

There are plenty of things this new installment does better than the original. Taking the time to invest in the characters and their connections to the world of Wicca isn't one of them. 

“Memento Mori” had the sisters fighting with a strength we’ve never witnessed.

It was exciting to see them team up and use their powers in new and exciting ways, but the fighting scenes still tend to come off as anticlimactic when there’s heavy CGI involved.

Regardless, the Power of Three coming together against evil is still an incredible thing to witness especially when it’s against the woman who killed their mother.

While the struggle between the sisters and Charity should have been the most compelling moment of the episode, watching Macy’s downward spiral ended up trumping absolutely everything else. 

Watching Mantock's poignant portrayal of a woman unraveling was mesmerizing.

Her desperate grasp for shreds of her sanity was unbelievably convincing.

Her inner struggle was much more captivating than any outward battle the show has rendered.

Madeline Mcclintock is undoubtedly a powerhouse, and her performance gave a darker, eerier tone that’s gravely been missing in other episodes. 

The clever use of dramatic irony also aided in amping the stakes of Macy’s story.

Knowing the truth about Charity but still having to watch her manipulate Macy, even as her mental health deteriorated, was painstaking.

It was satisfying to watch Maggie and Macy figure out the truth about Charity.

Being so close to the Elder, the writers easily could have allowed Harry to discover her secrets.

Instead, the women were allowed to figure it out for themselves.

Harry was used merely as a confirmation of their suspicions. 

That's exactly as it should be. 

Because the episode was so jam-packed with reveals, the B plot of Allister orchestrating an attack on Parker felt underwhelming.

Although absent from the past few installments, Allister still renders as the seasons biggest villain, and his reappearance should have been a large focus.

Instead, it played as an afterthought.

With a full 22 episode season, it's doubtful the writers couldn’t find a more appropriate moment to refocus on Allister's return or Parker’s newfound impending death.

Maggie was forced to re-watch her mother's death. It’s offbeat for her to be by Parker's bedside.

Ending the episode with a scene focused on the heart of the series -- the sisters love for each other -- would have felt more grounded.

Even with all the answers, Charmed provided “Memento Mori,” there is still plenty of story left to wrap up before the finale.

Parker is on his deathbed, while Allister's plan has yet to unveil itself fully.

Fiona has just reemerged, and the truth regarding the Sarcana and their motives are still unknown.

What about Macy’s demonic side -- how will it affect her?

Where is Galvin and will he survive his mission?

If he does, what (or who) will he bring back?

Will Niko remember everything?

What will happen to Harry, now that Charity has gotten unmasked? 

And Marisol's story may be over, but what about their dad(s)?

Maybe that’s a storyline best saved for Charmed(2018) Season 2.
