Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 16 Review: I Have a Date Tonight

at .

The answer is here, even if it isn't super clear.

Love isn't a game when it comes to choosing who you want to be with, and Rebecca learns that the hard way when she has three dates to help her figure out her future.

With the end in sight, having a refreshing conclusion to a long-awaited question was the perfect representation of what the show is.

It was simple and it was promising without it coming off like an actual competition with no real stakes a hand.

Rating the Dates - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

During Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 16, Rebecca has her three dates and it feels like everyone and their mother wants to get involved in who they think will win all of this.

Rebecca's date with Josh becomes perfect and her date with Nathaniel feels like heaven to her. All of that ends up confusing Rebecca more, making her realize that she needs to cancel on Greg because it is too much.

But faith brings them together, and they end up at a car repair place just being themselves. That is when Greg randomly lets her know that she is the love of his life, the perfect end to an episode and a lead-in of sorts to a finale.

Greg and Rebecca - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 11

The love square in its entirety reaches a satisfying conclusion in that the lesson of love being a game backtracks in favor of what the show protagonist actually needs from all this, which is just someone that she can spend her time with and it doesn't need to be an over the top date.

"I Have a Date Tonight," written by Erin Ehrlich introduces the perfect ending to a question that has been in the making since Crazy Ex-Girlfriend started to air. Rebecca's choice was always present in the show, whether it was a healthy or subconscious choice or even one based in a coincidence.

The episode did a spectacular job in finally giving an answer without actually making it about the winner because at the end of the day it isn't a game, it is Rebecca's heart that is involved here.

The Dates and The Pressure

For an episode with such a big payout, having all the other characters mostly revolve around Rebecca, Greg, Nathaniel, and Josh was a smart way to not have too much going on.

There was an obvious investment in who Rebecca would choose, very similar to general ship wars that happen amongst the fans. There are sparse opinions on personal connections to the characters, without Rebecca's feelings playing a big role in all this.

Nathaniel: God, I hope I win though.
Josh: I really hope you lose.
Nathaniel: I also hope Greg dies.

Which then explains why she is getting lost in Josh and Nathaniel and Greg when some choices seem like they are outdated at this point.

It also builds up the pressure about who she will eventually choose.

But as much as it has felt like Rebecca's love life was a huge storyline until it was time for that decision to be made, and then it was a private matter that was only for her.

Rebecca in Vegas - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 15

She didn't share with any other characters or the audience what she decided, because this was almost a stand about her future and her decision to keep this to herself.

Looking forward to the series finale, this was a fitting way to still intrigue the audience about what is to come while resolving the biggest question in a realistic way.

There was no other way to handle this that felt perfect for Rebecca and for the relationships that she shares with all of these guys, no matter who she is or isn't with at the end.

The Greg and Rebecca of It All

It was that simple.

There may be some definite bias here, but the "date" between Greg and Rebecca made it all crystal clear.

It wasn't about how romantic or how perfect the date was, in fact, it could be something far from it. Greg was right when he referenced the way he feels for Rebecca, that is at the heart what matters most.

Greg: You're the love of my life. You know that, right?
Rebecca: Well, I do now.

Because pulling out all the stops during the date is almost taking part in the game portion of it, and that isn't a view into what they could be beyond that.

It was sweet of Greg to try to go all out once he started to doubt his own theory, and yet it was the ending that confirmed exactly what he was thinking.

It wasn't about where they were or what they were doing, it felt so simple for the two of them to spend time together and enjoy the other's company.

It felt so easy because it was, and nothing huge had to happen to cement that they worked on every single level.

Rebecca and Josh Together - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 8

They even wanted to cancel at the same time because there is a connection where they understand each other in a way that the others don't.

It obviously isn't announced that Greg wins, which is exactly why it feels like those two will be together. It isn't about winning, it becomes who Rebecca wants to spend her time with.

There was so much focus on the actual making a choice thing where Rebecca announces it and everyone reacts, so dialing it back to Rebecca finding peace where it isn't even on her mind is when it feels like the choice has been made.

And if not, that was still a beautiful moment where Greg called Rebecca the love of his life. It was so easy because it comes off as if that is something Greg always knew and didn't need to learn from their dates.

It just makes sense and this was the perfect way to both wrap-up and move into the series finale.

What did you think of the episode this time around? Who were you rooting for to win? Do you think the answer about who Rebecca will choose is clear? Did you enjoy all the dates?

Where does this leave off everyone else? Are you prepared for the show to come to a close? What are you hoping to see before it ends? What do you think we can expect of the series finale?
