Pretty Little Liars Update: What Happened to Alex and Mary Drake?

When Pretty Little Liars concluded in 2017, it left a string of unanswered questions.
New spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists has been shedding light on some answers to some of the drama's most burning questions.
Tuesday's episode of the spinoff finally addressed Mona's time in Paris in which she had Alex and Mary Drake locked up and living life as dolls in the basement of Mona's doll shop.
This was all thanks to a scene involving Mona and Dana Booker, with the latter bringing up Mona's antics in Paris.
Mona: Ali’s a very complex person. It’s part of her charm.
Dana: Part of yours, too. I noticed in your file you never told the university what happened in Rue des Siffleurs. Am I saying that right? My French isn’t very good.
Mona: No, it’s not. And no, I didn’t tell them. It’s not relevant.
Dana: I see. So, tell me — do you worry that Alex and Mary Drake may try to find you?
Mona: I have no idea what you’re talking about. Oh, but isn’t that what got you in trouble with the FBI in the first place? Making connections that aren’t there? … It’s a funny thing about research, it goes both ways.

Mona has always proven to one of the most resourceful liars, so it was perfectly Mona to have done her research into Dana.
While there was no definite answer about what happened to the mother and daughter duo who caused many problems for the original liars, Dana's wording seems to suggest that they somehow escaped.
Either that or Mona killed them. Would Mona turn to murder? Probably, but that seems a little too dark for her character.
At the beginning of PLL: The Perfectionists, Alison wondered why Mona would leave her life in Paris behind to become embroiled in another mystery.
“That was great for a while,” Mona replied, “But eventually, the reasons I was there… escaped me.”

Could those "reasons" be Alex and Mary? If they did escape, it's hard to imagine them not popping back up to cause some more problems.
