BH90210 Season 1 Episode 1 Review: The Reunion

at .  Updated at .

Welcome back to the glitzy, palm tree-laden world of Beverly Hills, California.

It’s been a while since we saw Brandon Walsh, Kelly Taylor, and company, but in so many ways, it feels like barely any time has passed at all.

In the year 2019, we’re not getting the will they/won’t they push and pull of Kelly and Brandon on BH90210 Season 1 Episode 1, we’re getting the push and pull of Jason Priestley and Jennie Garth.

And trust me, it is just as satisfying.

The 30th Anniverary - BH90210

Starting with the iconic opening credits and the quick trip to the Peach Pit, it’s clear this reimagining will be bringing back all the feelings.

Even though we’re not seeing what married life is like for Donna and David, that doesn’t mean we’re not going to get some serious flashbacks to the original series.

Sprinkled throughout the premiere are several callbacks to the original series, and they fit perfectly with the tone of the show.

This isn’t pure comedy or pure drama, but a true mixture of the two. There are serious moments followed up by little jabs and self-deprecating humor.

Forever Friends - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 1

The premiere does a decent job of introducing us to the new versions of the actors we’ve known for the past thirty-plus years.

Tori Spelling leans into in her actual self the most, as a mother of six with monetary troubles and her own reality tv show showcasing her family.

Struggling to make ends meet, it's Tori who really relishes the reunion the most and is the one person who holds a true fondness for the show and the impact it's had on her life.

She’s also still close with Jennie Garth in this world, which mirrors their real lives as well.

Tori: Excuse me. Why is there no room on this plane?
Jennie: It's called coach.
Tori: What is it called?
Jennie: Coach.

By my count, Jennie gets the most laugh out loud material, as she struggles with the end of yet another marriage and an identity crisis.

Out of everyone in the cast, it seems hardest for her to shake her image as Kelly Taylor.

Her loathing of Jason Priestley is comical at first until she reveals the real reasoning behind her disdain.

While Jennie’s life was dissected and crucified for years upon years; Jason’s life remained relatively unscathed.

He was able to do what he wanted in the spotlight without receiving the same scrutiny and vitriol that Jennie received.

And while he seems to understand that, he also accepts it which angers Jennie even more.

Poolside Hang Out - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 1

I hope this double standard gets explored in more detail. It's existed for years and still does, but it should be talked about more often. This is as good as any platform to do it.

Even though this isn’t Brandon and Kelly, the shippers of that couple were probably excited to see Jason and Jennie give into their chemistry and fall into bed with one another.

We all have our favorite pairings over the course of the show, with Brandon and Kelly and David and Donna being among many fans favorites.

Pairing their real-life counterparts in this new world makes all the sense in the world. And I think fans will enjoy seeing Priestley and Garth, as well as Green and Spelling, play off of those dynamics.

Grand Entrance - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 1

But seeing as how everyone is married, sans Jennie, it doesn't seem like happy endings are in order for everyone.

Speaking of married, of all the cast, it seems like Brian’s marriage is currently the strongest.

Taking a backseat to his successful wife has taken a toll on him, but reuniting with the gang seems to have given him a kick in the pants.

Of all the spouses that were introduced this hour, Shay makes the biggest impression. Unlike Jason and Ian’s wives, Shay seems genuinely supportive of Brian finding himself again.

Checking In - BH90210 Season 1 Episode 1

Jason’s wife appears to be in work mode at all times. And Ian’s wife, well, it’s unclear what her motive is, though I think we all can guess.

Gabrielle Carteris doesn’t get quite as much screen-time as everyone else, but the set-up for her story is a very intriguing one.

There were fireworks between her and the hotel waitress, and it seems like it will be something she struggles with moving forward.

Rounding out the cast is Shannen Doherty, who is apparently not on good terms with the rest of the cast. Away from Hollywood completely, it’ll be interesting to see how she gets incorporated into the major plot of the series.

BH90210 2019 Cast

With the series seemingly moving forward with the cast working together to get a reboot greenlit, it opens the door for many former faces to make an appearance or two.

While the core group is here, there were so many other actors who helped contribute to the lasting memory that is Beverly Hills, 90210.

Jason: Well, this is weird. Oh, come on, we're all thinking it.
Gabrielle: I like that the anniversary brought us together. I can't believe that we are all here.
Jason: I wish that were true.

One of those people was Luke Perry. And the show tackles his death with grace. Having Luke’s face be the last frame of the episode is a beautiful touch.

This series is majorly ambitious, and it may even be confusing for some, but if the first hour is any indication of what’s to come, we are in for six very fun weeks.

Extra, Extra

  • A few of the nostalgic moments that stood out for me: David playing Color Me Badd on the jukebox, the "Donna Martin Graduates" reference on the t-shirt and Donna's gigantic red spring dance dress from the first season.

Tori's subsequent breakdown over retrieving the dress was an episode highlight.
  • Brian's lost wallet and the guy lurking outside his gate will be adressed in future episodes I'm sure, but it felt a bit out of place here.
  • The original series was known for its bold fashion choices, and I'm glad to see we're getting some dramatic choices on this series as well.
  • The casting of the spouses was spot on. Ivan Sergei! Vanessa Lachey! Lala Anthony! I almost wish they had played heightened versions of themselves as well, but that could have gotten very tricky.

People have been clamoring for a 90210 reboot, and while this may not have been what everyone envisioned, it's worth checking out.

I'm excited to hear what you guys thought about the pilot and what you hope to see moving forward.

Covering a show I grew up obsessing over is a dream come true, and I'm excited to talk about it with you!

Which cast members are you looking forward to seeing this season?

Whose storyline has you most intrigued?
