At the end of the previous episode Hetty explained that Hunter was gone on special assignment. That's what all the backstopping was for.
I don't blame Callen for his treatment of and reaction to Hunter. Respect should be earned, not demanded. Yes, Hunter replaced Hetty as the agent in charge BUT she came in demanding respect and began messing with the entire team. I haven't seen her show one iota of respect for the people she's in charge of. In fact, in this episode when Callen confronts her about bringing in the NSA agent, she very clearly insults Deeks by saying "he's just a cop" as if that makes him or his profession beneath her. There is common courtesy and decency and she hasn't shown any of it. I think you would be hard pressed to find any employee who would respect a boss like that. There is a huge difference between authority based on respect and authority maintained by intimidation or fear. If she didn't know anything about Callen's past or there was nothing on the Comescu laptop about him she could have alleviated alot of his frustration if she had just explained that from the beginning. According to the show timeline, it looks like he's been waiting a couple months to get any kind of information that may pertain to him and why the Comescus wanted him dead. Nell basically made that NSA agent feel like a jerk and it was well deserved. I loved the ending look Nell gave her. Deeks having gone to law school is not new. He was credited with that last season - most recently in the Imposters episode right after the Prince O Whales bar blew up. I believe Deeks is an extremely intelligent, excellent cop. His humor is showcased ALOT in order to play off Kensi's seriousness which has been very good for their "thing." Unfortunately some viewers intensely dislike him and refer to him as a joke or too childish. I don't think there is anything wrong with him being lighthearted or funny. Every serious profession does have its inside jokes, lighter moments and co workers who use humor to cope with the job. I don't think he's a horn dog, he is just a guy and they are very visual by nature. I also think he plays that up alot of the time to get a reaction out of Kensi. I am betting that he'd be a very different Deeks in a serious relationship.
Hunter's manipulation to create backstopping for herself really was no reason to change up the teams. It was just annoying and a total power play. She did it because she could. The outcome of the Ashley Thomas angle would have been the same even if she'd left Sam and Callen partners as normal. The switch did have its humorous moments, but I don't think they outweighed my irritation over it. I agree with AK about the waste of time and resources for an "office of special projects" team to run around and do Hunter's backstopping. If Nell and Eric can do it for the team whenever it's needed then there was not a believable/justifiable reason for this plot. Nell and Eric weren't even in on the backstopping identity creation. Nell got alerted to the immediate upload of Ashley Thomas info so that means someone else, somewhere else, had already created what Hunter needed. Good to see Hetty back finally.
Based on the information in the season one finale, "Callen, G" I don't believe Hunter is his sister. Callen asked Hetty at the end of the Deadline episode how he and his sister made it back into America after his mother was killed and Hetty told him that she didn't know. She eventually did find them because according to the season one finale, Nate found a notebook with the addresses of all foster homes and orphanages they both lived in. She stopped tracking 11 year old Amy after the orphanage drowning accident so she was aware that Hannah Lawson did switch beds that night and take Amy's name.
I don't remember seeing a flashback that shows Hetty being the one to rescue a young Callen from the beach after the Comescus shot his mother. I'll go back and watch it again but the final scene on the beach is Callen getting the tiny toy tin soldier handed to him by a Comescu male in a suit with the tattoo. (In the Deadline episode Callen even asks Hetty how he and his sister got back to America and she tells him that she doesn't know) I also don't think Hunter tipped off the Comescus to the Team's arrival in country. Alexa showed Hetty 4 photographs taken at the airport when the team arrived. She told Hetty that her contacts in high places notified her. There is no way Hunter would have known exactly what time the team would make their way through the airport. I don't trust Hunter and I don't like her but I don't see her being that disloyal to Hetty and she knew the team had gone to rescue Hetty.
I honestly don't think Hunter is his sister. Callen's sister Amy died when she was 11. Callen finds this out during the season one finale. A woman who was using Amy's name comes up during a case. The woman explains that as a girl she was in the same orphanage as Callen's sister. She and Amy snuck out one night to play in a river and Amy was swept away. The other girl went back to the orphanage and slept in Amy's bed so when Amy's body was finally found the police buried her under the name Hannah Lawson. During the same show Nate shows Hetty a notebook documenting all of Callen's foster homes. The book also documented the places that Amy Callen lived up until the last orphanage at age 11 and no further entries were made so the person writing them was aware of the switch Hannah Lawson made the night Amy died.
I hope that Hunter is not Callen's sister as I cannot stand the character at all. Glad to see her gone from the show at this point. I agree that she will probably turn up again later but hopefully much later. I was so very glad to see Hetty back, Eric whistling to call the team to Ops again, and the teams back to normal. As far as Callen's first name, I'm not going to be quick to assume that his mother named him George after his grandfather. I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those shows where we don't really find out what his name is until the series ends. Or Shane Brennan could pull a Young Riders stunt and leave us guessing forever. My biggest new question from this episode is why the Comescus left Callen alive on the beach a after killing his mother? It doesn't fit in with the bloodthirsty picture that was painted in the character of Alexa Comescu. Come to think of it, why have there been no flashbacks of his sister on the beach with him and his mother? Where was she? Especially since his father's identity is in question now. Come on Deeks and Kensi! These two are one of the highlights of the show for me. I think Deeks is just "talking" rather than getting. He was way too interested in the adult content in Kensi's journal.
