He has changed. Some of the changes are for the better, some of them are most definitely NOT for the better. In trying to give Beckett her room and not push her away, he made himself her doormat. Period. That is a hard pill to swallow for the fans who loved Castle, just as he was, for the first four years.
Another example of a change in Castle that has nothing to do with Beckett, is the time Castle was in his study, alone, clearly trying to decide what to do about the haunted DVD. The clock read 3 am which tells us that he was up worrying and debating about what to do. He picks up the phone and calls Wes Craven to ask him about a story in which a haunted DVD might cause the deaths of the two heroes in a story he was not really writing. He clearly believed that he was in trouble and needed help. Castle from 2 seasons ago would not have had that issue. Even season 4 Castle would not have been that foolish.
By way of example, Castle did not believe in the Mummy’s curse or in UFO’s prior to this season. Now he apparently believes in Bigfoot and Haunted DVDs. His books are no longer “best sellers†but relegated to the clearance table. He doesn’t spend time researching and writing, but playing with remote control toys. He makes asinine remarks that annoy everyone around him, most notably Espo, who used to refer to him as “our boy†or “broâ€. Now (last 3 episodes) all Castle gets from Espo are harsh looks and at least one critical remark about the names of the characters in his novels.
SK, great analysis. I would like to say that I stick with my earlier posts, here and elsewhere, that Castle is no longer Kate’s partner. Partnership implies equality on some level. The current inequality has happened because, as you said, Castle allowed it. His love and devotion for her have caused him to pull back and allow her to “find herself†now that her mother’s murder is solved. He has voluntarily subjected himself to her needs. Regardless of the cause of change, a change has occurred.
Pete, I agree that the clearance book was a stab at Castle. I love the show and all of the characters, but I started watching because of Nathan. He was amazing in Firefly and I followed him to Castle. I am upset that he has progressively been made to look foolish and weak. The character is better than that and so is the actor who portrays him!
Another wish list item-Castle acts a little more like he did in the beginning. More assertive, more confident, and less like a doormat. I guess I'm just missing Captain Mal. That's why I started watching Castle in the first place. Sigh.
I was so unhappy with the end of season 5, like so many others. We didn't even get one happy/passionate season after waiting for 4 years. Castle and Beckett weren't the only ones with sad faces! The good news is that we are 1/2 way through the wait for 6x1. I have decided to have faith that it will be good and good storytelling is something AM does superbly.
I agree Vince. I'll watch episode 1 of season 6 but after that we'll see. It better be awesome! I saw the tumblr pictures also. I didn't watch the video of the screen test for PI, but I read the transcript for it. I wonder if AM let this leak to put out some of the fires that are raging? At least our wait is almost half over.
I am so glad that I read the tumblr post. It was such a positive view of such a sad season finale. I hope AWM and cohorts have something as healing in store for us.
What's up with "moderation"? I'm new to this site and I have no clue what that means or who decides. Any answers?
