a sub-par Season Three? This season has been quite exciting and really good!

Season three has killed any character consistency, pushed Elena into unbelievable heights ignoring every character and STILL failing to develop Elena Swan into anything and ANYTHING likeable, completely destroyed the idea of DEATH since no one dies for real, completely ignored things that matter like CONSEQUENCES of elena's death of jenna's death of all the deaths that were elena's fault.
Season three also ignores any p=mourning periods, does not do ANYTHING with its timeskip, fails to deliver upon "bad steffie" promise completely rining his character and then completely excuses anything he would do with emotion-turn-off plot device.
S3 continues the bad trends of S2 of making Elena into justified mary sue who is never wrong and has no flaws, making damon b e "wrong" and steffie still be noble and heroic and tortured.
At the same time it gets rid of the crucial element of Steffie's backstory, completely excusing all he could have done and even things he did are made tame and excusable, making his current guilt trips baseless and pointless.
S3 continues to ignore Elena and give her no development neither as main character nor as protagonist.
It also successfully drains DE pairing out of any believability or chemistry chugging out thousands of eww-worthy forced DE scenes.
Overall it drains the main trio and their relationships out of any relatable, likeable traits
AT THE SAME TIME it completely fails to deliver onto Klaus as believable and DANGEROUS villain, destroying everything that was good about his build up. It then adds a completely lackluster Original backstory that makes no sense real-world-wise and retcons the hell out of everything that came in the show before this.
S3 also completely neglects Katherine and turns her into second Elena and is on the road to ruin Forwood ala the only real and relatable pairing in this show.
The only character that remains consistent is Caroline. Its safe to say that Caroline is the last thing that makes sense in this show.
Thus its safe to say that the show has been downhill, S1 being the best season and S3 so far being sadly the worst.
I think there were already talks that Meredith of the show WOULD NOT be Elena's childhood friend (which is major fail IMO).
and they don't introduce character without a purpose? WHAT? 99% of the characters in this show had no purpose. What was purpose of Isobel? Burn ? Jenna? Jonah family? GHOSTS?
And let's not bring up Rose The Insomnia-Curing Plotline.

Yes, but Elijah did not spend last 80 years in coffin because klaus killed him and if he knew truth behind his mother's death he would never have taken klaus side again. And EVEN without that knowledge, what writers made elijah do there was a complete asspull.
Unless this allows for everyone in the cast(LITERALLY everyone) to bitchslap elena for her stupid actions that led to another enemy, I just can't seem to bring myself to care about any of the originals.

Sure roadblocks come and go but the main defining factor of Forwood and what separated it up until now from DE and SE hell boredom was that it was FUN AND YOUTHFUL. It just does NOT work that way.
getting back to Elena would involve exposition and character development. THis show just can't allow that to happen obviously. Everything about elena is just an empty statement. People say she is caring. people say she was fun. People say she is strong. And?
And nothing. Elena has no character development a protagonist or main character should get. She is nothing but an empty place of concepts. tis the same as if she was walking with I CARE written on her t-shirt.

Yes. The problem with this show is howver, that the GOOD and EVIL is not mixed, but superficial. Characters do not have BOTH qualities, they alternate between the concepts as if they have defined moral meaning and the show usually uses Miss Cardboard Elena Gilbert as "moral compass", which in itself is laughable.
As if that was not enough, the show does NOT allow for certain characters to even enter the "white" or "black" zone. Steffie will always be noble hero that craps sugar and Damon will always be wrong misunderstood guy.
There's no moral complexity in TVD. Its as simple as "guy A is evil now!~ he will cry a lot" and "guy A is no longer evil now!~ he is just misunderstood and goood good good no matter what he did since that has no consequences EVER"
All I can say is if plec shits up Caroline or introduces some lame whimpy version of Meredith, I am done with this show.

Hopes for 2012: resolving the originals and ripper steff plotlines quickly, stopping the forced SE and DE development, giving more screentime to caroline and less screentime to Elena Cardboard, finally getting rid of Germy and Matt, stopping the woobiefication of Klaus and Damon, shifting away from the focus of annoying and boring DES triangle of doom towards developing characters that could be interesting and matter, namely Alaric, Caroline, Bonnie, etc.
Overall while most of S1 was in between B+ to A-, second half of S2 was VERY weak D with minus, this is C with minus.
Was Mikael killed off too soon?
YEs. Yes. And only yes. His example poses a very ominous warning about the lifespan of originals nt named ELijah or Klaus. Mikael went out pathetically, unfittingly.
For a family of Originals that had such an amount of hype, the payoff so far is nowhere near as big and Originals look quite puny in comparison. They just don't feel any least threatening nor dangerous nor OLD. They feel less dangerous than Katherine with the newest episode.
Also with Mikael's death, there's no bigger danger to Originals and I fear the whole FAMILY PROBLEMS stuff will swallow whatever promising is left from that plot.

Neither? Frankly this episode did not surprise. The execution of twists was very lacking and the conclusion was obvious way before the twist happens.

Steff and Originals plots being finally put of its misery. Whatever build up Ripper Steff has was lost ith this half of season of going nowhere and show made convenient excuses for Steffan's behavior now, since hey! Its not Steffan(TL;DR version: Steff story right now is plagued by VERY SAME problems Robo-Sam story was plagued by in Supernatural).
- Elena is still boring bland and pretty much same person as in ep 1 of s1. Just more boring and irritating.
- DE is as forced as ever.
- Whole DES is as forced as ever.
- Episode was littered with plot conveniences, character inconsistencies and stupidity for the sake of advancing the plot.
- Show dropped interesting plots for sake of cheap twists.(Mikael feeding on vampires for example).
- The "Stefan ripper" farce continuing for longer than needed. Seriously just end it. No one cares already about this since its not steff.
- Episode directing-wise falling flat on its face and having no atmosphere, nor character realism.
While not as big of garbage as the Ordinary People, this episode was certainly amongst the worst episodes of this show.

Notice how she did not really care about that, beyond the irritation that "bollocks, my plans got messy by this"? As far as Emily Thorne is concerned, Lydia got what she deserved. The problems is not that she got that, but that it was not according to her plans - in her plans Lydia most likely suffered worse fate than death, maybe jail, etc, but not death, as according to Emily "death is too good for them".
