I definitely thought Mack was the star of this episode, which is good to see in a season dominated by Dennis. In the early seasons, Mack was my favorite character, but was replaced by Dennis in the past few seasons. I like the episodes where it takes places almost entirely in the bar and mostly among themselves. No group of characters has chemistry quite like them, and when they are constantly verbally attacking each other is always great. I'm glad I wasn't the only one that noticed the guy in the background the whole time even before he got up and actually had a line. Classic ending of the gang eventually just blaming Dee for something she had nothing to do with, and put a cap on to this seasons theme of recycling old material. Can't wait for season 9, I hope we get 13 episodes next year!
Definitely not the best episode in what I think to be a very strong season. It's hard to maintain a high level when the entire episode takes place in the same spot. That being said, being 8 seasons deep I appreciate what they were attempting. Dennis' toast to Mac was definitely the highlight of the episode. "I licked her asshole a little bit, it was pretty good, it was alright, it wasn't great." Mac and Charlie staring at each other was better than it should have been. Only those two could have pulled it off. My other favorite part was Dee's sinister little laugh at the end when the waiter was on the ground covered in her spaghetti. Only 10 episodes this season though? I feel shorted.
I thought this was the best episode of the season. Dealing with Vargas being placed on long term disability, watching him come back to the firehouse, and then almost killing himself was the most emotional I've gotten all season. I really hope they keep him on the show and deal with his struggles. I thought Chief Boden was quite excellent this episode too, getting more screen time than usual. I was scared myself when he was screaming at Severide in his office. I'd like to see him give more intense speeches kind of like how Andre Braugher does. I think think the story about the kid is kind of predictable. I figured he was living with some abusive person brain washing him. I hope they are able to settle that matter soon and get that kid safe. I'd like to see Herrmann change his mind that the only way for this kid to learn is to be thrown into the system, and take him under his wing and mentor him. That moment between Casey and Dawson was seemed to last forever, and I had never wanted two people to kiss more than at that moment. It's bound to happen, and I hope soon. Enough with Severide's shoulder already. I'm glad people are saying something to him about it, but it something serious needs to happen or just let it heal. -Mouch going struggling up the stairs was nice and subtle comedy in a very emotional episode
After a few weeks into the fall season, this show emerged to me as being the best new show of the fall. I might be a little biased because I live in Chicago, and I was extra excited that the train incident happened on the same train line that I take to work everyday. The biggest annoyance that I have with this show, and it seems to be pretty much the biggest one with everyone else is Kelly's shoulder. That story arc needs to end, and it needs to happen now. It's ridiculous that he can hold on to 2 different people from falling to their deaths with that shoulder. Boden needs to either bust him or it just needs to rip out completely. I loved the bit between Mouch and the Canadians. The comedic side of this show is just enough to take some of the edge off and change up the mood.
