I share your concern, AWM seems unable to write any episode that resembles anything remotely like "a long sweeping love story", all his episodes seem to me like a homage to Stana, let's hope TEM really does have some influence on this one. I too think that TPW should write this one, if indeed, it is the wedding episode, which seriously doubt now.
Sadly, Stana's reasoning regarding the engagement, do not bear much scrutiny. I have no issue with not wearing it at work, but surely, the family Thanksgiving dinner is a private moment. Kate went to all the trouble of getting dressed up in her costume, even bought Rick his costume, but failed to wear her engagement ring, just look when she high fives Martha, no ring. If a Thanksgiving dinner with your fiancé, Father, future Mother and Daughter-in-laws, is not a private moment, I do not know what constitutes one! Someone within the Castle team hierarchy needs to get their stories right!
Ep 6:17 had the lowest viewers for the entire season, perhaps AWM might need to reconsider where he is taking this alleged "long sweeping love story". Might I suggest that he actually brings to a conclusion one of the long running sagas, ie, Tyson or Bracken, and gets Caskett married asap. The viewer ratings seem to show that the fans are getting bored with the show whilst it continues to ramble along resolving nothing. S7 might not be the sure thing everybody thinks it is!
Nottrampis. I was not going to call this episode a joke, more a complete and utter anticlimax! I agree with your view about Capt Gates, she should have kicked the Narcotics guy out of her precinct, he had clearly done no homework at all, and for Beckett to agree to go undercover with just two hours notice is simply crap story telling. This story had more holes in it than a fishing net. In addition to the. Points you make, why didn't Simmonds kill Beckett in the basement then dump her body, then clean the place up? I thought the beginning, letter scene and end scene with caskett were well done, but the rest, totally forgettable. Although Stana's performance was excellent, IMO, her performance in Kill shot was much better. I wonder if AWM will now give NF the opportunity to show off his considerable acting skills, but somehow, I doubt it!! One last irritation, who is the moron at ABC, who put together the promo for 6:18? After the so-called heroics of Beckett in 6:17, Castle is apparently being shown as a clown again in the next episode, this is so predictable it is beyond a joke now.
I thought that this was one of the better cases of late, and a better episode than I was anticipating, considering the writers previous effort, TS&TQ! Much less Caskett this week, but that was to be expected after the last couple of episodes. I too, am not too happy to see Alexis back at the loft, it seems to me that AWM has let her character off lightly for her appalling behaviour towards Caskett earlier in the season. It would have been much more realistic for Castle to have given Alexis some tough love, and made her earn it, but we are talking Marlowe here, who never makes Castle out to be anything other than a soft touch. Is it just me, but I find it surprising, that when AWM gives a TV interview, he is NEVER quizzed about the fans reaction to TSQ&TQ, especially the kiss scene, Kate's behaviour in the final 3 eps of S5, why we didn't get to see Espo, Ryan and Lanie's reaction to her leaving, and why we never get to see the engagement ring, and considering how big the ring Kate was wearing in this episode, it cannot be a size thing!
I echo your sentiments regarding the writing, it makes you wonder if they remember anything that has been written before. Have you seen the latest promo for 6:16? With all the excuses as to why the engagement ring is never seen nowadays, because it would get in the way If Kate wears it to work, just look at the ring on her right hand in the promo! If that is not too large to wear to work, neither is her engagement ring, just another lack of attention to detail. AWM is treating the fans like idiots.
A very enjoyable episode, even though the plot was a bit farfetched. Great Caskett moments again, and a decent kiss at the end. Now for the bad news, the next episode is written by the guy who penned the evil episode TS&TQ, I'm surprised he is still employed after that one, followed by one written by AWM. Cue angst to start, as has always been the case with Marlowe. Hopefully, the angst will be case related, but knowing Marlowe, I wouldn't bet on it!!
As this writer also wrote the worst Castle episode ever, The Squab & The Qual, let's hope he gets it right this time!
Christine. I agree with most of what you say. I thought the final scenes were brilliant, and extremely well portrayed by both SK/NF, they have come a long way in S6, it is hard to envisage how AWM can cause a crisis between them now. Regarding the dress, I cannot say I hate, but it wouldn't be my choice, Stana has such a gorgeous figure, why not show it? Sadly, AWM has not got a history of fleshing story lines out, eg. why hasn't Kate asked about his failed marriages, why hasn't she told him how his books meant so much to her when her Mother was murdered, hopefully, this will happen at the wedding reception in Jim's speech, Why didn't we see the break up with Josh, I definitely wanted to see that, I disliked him intensely. Why didn't we see Espo, Ryan and Lainie's reaction to her going to DC, so many missed opportunities for good story telling, IMO. Hopefully, one scene we will get to see, is Kate taking Rick to her Mother's gravestone, and introducing him to her, that would be a real tearjerker, but somehow, I don't think we will see it.
Tonya B. Good to hear from you. Regarding your final sentence, all I can say is, watch dressed to kill, you will not be disappointed.
