You should certainly check it out :)
There are some things you should know though:
1. A LOT of plotpoints, scenes and characters in TVD are bassically copied from that show.
2. BtVS can be VERY cruel to viewers. Any sort of long-term happiness leads to tragedy, character deaths are sudden and cruel and being fan favorite does not protect you from getting brutally mutilated.
3. The show starts off quite light, full of homages to modern horror movies and horror movie cliche subversions. You have seemingly unconnected episodes at first that explore the characters a bit and set up the setting However as the show goes on, it gets darker an darker and darker and episodes start to form a coherent storyline. And its actually REALLY well planned. There are things in the first season(episode: Nightmares) hinted as far as from 5th, 6th, 7th season and tons of hints are latter thrown foreshadowing various events to come.
4. Holidays, Birthdays, Parties = guaranteed to go very bloody and change the direction of the show entirelly. Especially birthdays.
5. Don't expect everyone to have only likeable traits. Might not be as apparaent in the first season, but as it goes on its quite clear cut that everyone has their problems and various feuds and problems can't be solved by simply having a talk - that just postpones it all.
Buffy is a darker show, despite not having characters loose their hearts, necks or heads(literally) every 5 minutes.
Buffy is a darker show because every character(especially Buffy) has a darker side in them. Something selfish, something broken, something wrong. Everyone of them might have had the sense of illusion that they can do no wrong, but as Buffy said "I no longer have it". They can make wrong choices, do very stupid and selfish things and mistakes and so on and whats important they have to live with them and be reminded of them again and again and again.
Second reason is that events, deaths and whats more important, life itself, affects them(unlike in TVD where they all seem to live in some bubble where time has been completelu stoped) in VERY realistic ways. And life is a lot more cruel thing in there than in TVD. "Life is not a song", "life is not a story" and life certainly is NOT fair - its not something that can be glossed over or put aside for other plotlines - if something bad could happen it will happen at the worst moment and everything has a price. You can't always conveniently find a spell to save the dying people like Bonnie did with Jeremy and Elena. Life is cruel. People die. And sometimes they die for the stupidest and simplest reasons that do not involve a dramatic prolonged scene of big bad staking your aunt. After all, that "the hardest thing in this world is to live in it" is one of major themes of the show.
Third reason is depth. While I see nothing wrong with TVD approach, TVD feels more like a book story being told. You go through the plot, characters move in their roles, you get romance and everything is very nicely laid out from point A to point B with some shocking twists. There is a good side and bad side and characters make clear-cut things that either end up in one or other.
BTVS world and storytelling is more chaotic. There is no point A or point B. There are no permanent roles. There are no dreamy fantasy soulmates. There are just people in chaotic life going through chaotic supernatural and non-supernatural events and changing due to all of that. Supernatural events, storyline, characters, personal lives, non-supernatural events - all those things meshing up together. Sure everyone makes decision, but are they good? are they bad? and what the hell is bad and good anyway. Its easy to define villain of the story and the goodguys, but the character decisions? Its up to viewer(and other characters) to either hate character or like character for what they did or said.
Fourth reason is endings. TVD as cliffhangery as it is, has a clear-set on what characters want to do. In BTVS on other hand, characters do not necesarilly know what they want to do, what they should do and if what they are doing is right. They stand at the crossroads desperatelly searching for a direction.
Fifth is the dirt. TVD fears to do anything huge and different with any character. Thus, so far, Stefan always comes off right and heroic, Damon always is messed up and lost, Elena is always right and does the right thing and so on. While in BTVS, every character sometimes does something despicable, something out of normal, something viewers might not like or agree with. And why should they not? They are people. People are not as clear cut to separate into black and white. Every human has their own "demon", called humanity, that can lead them to very different paths.
In the end, Buffy is darker because its life. TVD is lighter because its a story.
So yeh, not holding my breath for some huge developments on evil stefan or for Elena to get called out on her hypocrisy and stupidity.
But with Buffy it was sensible. Buffy lost everything and everyone she cared about and pretty much indicated wanting to die, ringing back to Spike's words that every slayer has a death wish. She had no wish to continue living, no wish to stay and death, the heaven after, the content and calm state was a gift to her as well as a gift from her to dawn so she could continue living, hence "death is your gift" part. Through death she achieved happiness she lacked in life, till all that happiness got stolen away by her friends...
AS for Buffy's sacrifice - it was because monks modelled Dawn after Buffy. Dawn is identical in character and personality to pre-slayer Buffy and acts and thinks similar to how pre-season1 and season1 Buffy did.
Elena on other hands did what is best said in a bit modified words Buffy said to Riley "gee, i am a magical twin! well I guess I will go out and...die~".
And with how this show goes I really doubt she ever gets called out on her stupidity.
AS for Stefan - he never went "all the way" of loosing human emotions and would manage to fight his,hm, addictions eventually. Thats what separated him from others. Sure he wiped out that village(was it in madrid?) and all, but thats what relapses are about. However thats because Lexi managed to actually get him to fight that off and helped him. He never went fully ripper in those cases. All the rippers, once they are fully in their mode are said to be beyond salvation(I think Lexi herself mentioned that).
Anyway I really doubt Stefan gets to be bad that long. I mean we had a hyped "stefan is evil"flashback and what did it turn out? Guilt-ridden stefan drinks few people and goes good. IMO, tvd FEARS to actually give stefan darker sides. Elena is always right, Damon is always wrong and broken, Stefan is always the hero, sadly...I certainly hope I am wrong on this.
No i am talking about "goes batshit evil, tortures and kills known characters and is practically insane till he dies" way :) TVD does not have the balls to do that to their precious hero stefan...
Stefan does "die" in the books though("Stefan gets killed and sent to dark dimension"stuff and Damon with Elena search for a way to free him.)
The thing with rippers(god every time someone says Ripper in this show I suddenly get a sudden image of Giles cleaning his glasses, no idea why) is that rippers supposedly CAN'T turn back. Stefan was unique case because Lexie got to him in time. Rippers are supposed to be completely inhumane, unable to turn back and pretty much lacking the human side
For all we know, due tothe ammounts of blood Steffie got to eat, locking up won't work, he might get deadly withdrawals from that. And they would have to catch him first. Last time they all got lucky.
AS for evil? well this time it was(indirectly) elena's fault too. This whole thing happened because she went on with her ridiculous plan, and I hope she gets called on that at least once. If she did not go with this martyr thing - only bonnie would have died, stefan would still be good and jenna and countless others would be alive.
Also: Am I only one who gets strong "First Evil" vibes from Anna/Vicki in the finale? Do we REALLY know its actually them and not someone assuming their forms?
Except that they have not casted unknowns yet for original roles. D.Gillies(Elijah) is quite well known big-screen actor and J.Morgan is quite well known british actor. There have been total of 0 unknown actors cast :)
Unless Logan lived in a privately-owned flat complex, in which case no he could not :P
ALl the songs in that episode have been made speciffically for that show and are specifically written for those characters and setting. :)
And I am sure you heard it before, there are thousands of fanvids of various things with that song, a lot of things from that episode got very popular.
I certainly can't see Forwood ending up happy. Tyler will either die or the whole stuff will cause them to break up eventually.
I can't see DE getting that official for now. Most likely both of them will be in sort of denial, trying t antagonize each other for a while due to obvious guilt. I bet the conversations between them will be..awkward and frankly I can't see them getting THAT together yet. It needs to build up as they deal with this whole Stefan problem.
I certainly hope that whole Jermey ghost whisperer thing will be handled with dread and bad stuff like the consequences of defying death should be. If its just another convenient power, then ughhh. But if it IS treated as dangerus and bad and stuff then its ok. Its a very good way to get insight into things and give the show some sort of foreshadowing(which this show lacks). I certainly hope seeing dead people will take a toll n Jeremy's sanity even a little bit. and that he is not just a convenient way of getting original family out.
I sort of hope stefan gets to do bad stuff befre joining back, maybe even klaus is not able to control him and stefan eventually betrays him and remains a "third" badguy side for a while till he is brought back to the good side somehow(i doubt this show would go buffy route with him, this show has not got enough gutts to try that).
I sort of doubt Kat will join them. Its not her style and I do not see her making nice with Elena any time soon. She might not harm them but I doubt she will ever go uber friendly on them.
Since this show so far has neglected ELena, I surely expect Jeremy/Alaric bonding with elena being IGNORED AGAIN, like this show so loves to do ...I just pray she has at least A BIT MORE to do than sit there and care 3minutes per episode like it has been in season2...
As for your names, Steven would not work as its pretty much a different prunouncation of Stephan and Devon is name which began to appear in the last century.
SO far all siblings have VERY old names. Elijah as name dates a couple of thousand names and Nicholaus/Klaus is one of oldest german names known.
So Originals would most likely have very OLD names either biblical(like Elijah) or archaic (like Klaus)
So names like Bridgett, Michael, Ariadne, Cassandra, Sarah, Daniel, Adam, Jonathan, Roland, etc would work, while names like Steven, Helen, Demian, Devon would not either due to being too young or already used in some form.
SMG for either mother or sister (of course best casting for her imo would have been Meredith :3)
J.Marsters, because well...obviously...
and dozens of other fitting actors
