Just as she did for them - everyone in Mystic Falls is always falling all over themselves trying to die for their friends.

Once again...how so? Elena is strong, stubborn, selfish, hypocritical, pragmatic, loyal - I could name many more characteristics that apply to her, just as I could any of the characters. I might be hard pressed looking for positive character traits, but if she didn't have any personality at all than people wouldn't like or dislike her - and very few people seem not to have any opinion of her at all.

That's not even true - unless you think murdering people, mindraping people and unleashing a monster upon the world to save your own personal group of friends is perfect and right.

S1 was about saving Damon. S2 was about saving Elena. S3 was about saving Stefan. How does that make her a mary sue but neither of her male counterparts a gary sue?
Find a mary sue test and Elena fits all the description.
The wiki definition of the term is "A Mary Sue (sometimes just Sue), in literary criticism and particularly in fan fiction, is a fictional character with overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as a wish-fulfillment fantasy for the author or reader." I'm not the only one who sees Caroline as the embodiment of the latter - a character through which the writers of TVD can live vicariously, as opposed to a character in her own right. I don't think Elena fits that description. I can't see you presenting any evidence to the otherwise...so all I can conclude is that you're using the term as the new "jump the shark" - a means of writing off a story or character simply because they don't appeal to you personally.
