Mercedes or Rachael?
Team Rachel all the way! I know she's an abrasive and self-absorbed person at times, but you have to admit she's not the kind of evil that shows no remorse for her actions. Unlike Mercedes, she didn't want to risk the friendship that they had. And this was the first time in a long while that I saw Rachel more than willing to share the spotlight with somebody else. Though she privately admitted to Finn that Mercedes' performance of 'Out Here On My Own' was better, she didn't have the courage to say it straight to her face because it's either she felt that she had to give up a role that she rightfully earned for herself. And I really don't blame her a bit there. She didn't want a fight, but unfortunately got one in the end.
Kurt confronting Rachel about running for class president was another scene that I liked, though I really felt that it should have been Mercedes instead given her current situation. But nonetheless, I still believe that Rachel needed that realization too. Her running for president against one of her best friends would have her go back to the selfish Rachel we saw on S1. I'm happy that it was somehow halted with Kurt's words and I'm really looking forward as to how the next episode would be 'shocking' for her (according to online reports).
@Irene Frances ... I agree with you about how Rachel has changed and really values her developed and cherished friendships with Kurt and Mercedes. Looking at Rachel's face when she saw Mercedes at the wall posting the results of the new cast of WSS, Rachel's face was a look of bewilderment and sadness. This is a place where Rachel has never been before. Treasured relationships she loves but now delving into the darker places that could harm these friendships to the core. You're right she knew she lost and admitted it to Finn but was unable to admit it to Mercedes. But the Rachel who is on screen now has changed dramatically since s1. She'll probably never be free of all her selfishness but she has evolved into someone that Kurt and Mercedes cherish as a true friend. Rachel's going through the learning process of balancing the value of said friendships and one's own needs. Something everyone in life should learn about. But getting the role by default just digs the guilt in deeper I think. A real jolt to Rachel's conscience. I think this is good for her. And good for Mercedes as well being kicked out of Glee and retreating to Shelby will be humbling for her too. I just don't look forward to a long distance separate storyline like Kurt s2.
As for Kurt and Rachel tension over her running for office I think she will drop from running for Pres. She and Kurt both are delusional to even think either would win anyway. All McKinley classmen want to do is humiliate them. They laugh at Brittany to her face but I think Brittany and her popularity will win out in the end.
I will say the writers didn't support the reasons behind Mercedes' behavior very well this episode, aside from a thirty second conversation with a boyfriend who we just met. I understand it gave her story, but still. I would have liked to see a gradual build up over two previous episdoes max of directly showing the unfair treatment we're suppsoed to believe Mercedes gets, and then going in for an episode where she 'goeas all diva."
on topic, I love Rachel a lot. So yeah.
I agree whole heartedly with Mercedes actions. She was clearly better so she should have gotten the part. Rachel is a selfish, insuferable egomaniac. Glee is centered around Rachel and the others are merely background players. It would be acceptable and understandable if the others were all mediocre singers but they are not. Mercedes is Just as good as rachel if not better.Rachel does get all the good songs handed to her. I am so tired of hearing Rachel every week. no matter how good a singer she is, A steady diet of anything gets boring after a while. I'd much rather they mix it up and give other members of the club solo's more frequently. I would also rather hear more from mercedes, that girl's voice is awesome. Mr shue does play favourites and he does give rachel all the best singing roles even emma said to him before regionals that he does that. If he is all about instilling confidence in ALL his glee club kids shouldn't he be giving everybody an equal opportunity to shine. He clearly doesnt and takes the easy route of giving Rachel all the good parts as he clearly thinks Rachel is the best. He was surprise when emma and beist was saying that someone was giving Rachel competition for the role, he couldn't believe somone could compete with Rachel when he clearly should have thought about Mercedes.
@lattyp Thank You. I totally agree w/ you. rachael is too sure of herself. i mean its cool to be confident when it's needed but she is super cocky. i wouldn't be hating on her right now if she was a little modest but nope rachael thinks she knows everything and don't no nothing.
lattyp: "Mr shue does play favourites and he does give rachel all the best singing roles....."
I'm beginning to question whether that's true or not, mainly because there's a lot that happens off screen. For example, the first time they were doing "West Side Story," Will gave the solo to Tina, but we never saw a full performance from her. When Jesse was in New Directions, he supposedly got all the male leads that usually went to Finn, even though we never saw an actual ND performance with Jesse as the lead.
@Blade because jesse quit and so did Tina. Rachael Was Better For The Role But It's A Good Point.
Wowerz: I don't know what you mean. Re-watch "Preggers" and "Laryngitis." Tina got the solo at the end and Finn mentioned that Jesse started getting all the male leads.
Rachel, for sure.
It's not because I love her, but Rachel was being a good person in Asian F. You could argue that Mercedes is better, but hey, Rachel has been dreaming about playing Maria since she was a little girl. Mercedes wanted it for what, one episode? And Rachel was still willing to share the spotlight. Share her dream role with a girl who was being a total diva. Rachel > Mercedes, always.
Also, let's remember, Rachel gets a lot of solos because Rachel, Quinn, Puck, Kurt and Finn have been the main five from the start. Rachel's life revolves around singing, so yeah, it's not bad of her for wanting to do it. Mr Schue may give her a lot solos, but that doesn't make Rachel any less of a person. She gave Mercedes the ballad for Sectionals and was willing to share the role of Maria, for crying out loud. And considering the way everyone treats her, yet she's still there for everyone when they need her (Quinn, for example) she deserves them. Mr Schue may play favourites with her when it comes to solo, but when it comes to everything else, Rachel's last.
