I also love this episode! And I have a strong suspicion (especially after a look Chuck gave to Blair when she so sincerely told she loves him and his words " This is too bad"), that even though he wanted to hear these three words, he wasn't ready, cause I think noone in his life told him them before. His father was too involved in his bussines multiplying his fortune, and actually, he had no time for his son, even to say "I love you!" His eyes were so sad...

Fizgig, I loved that review! It was dead on in analyzing Chuck and his feelings for Blair. He loves her but he also just lost someone he loved. So he is trying to push anything that he cares about away from him because he feels he will lose them too.

You read my thoughts! He is afraid TO LOVE, because every person he loves (Dad) or might love (Mum) dies... And he is afraid of loosing Blair.

It's more than that though, Callipso. Despite the small changes in his personality that have come about as a result of his on/off relationship with Blair, Chuck remains overall a selfish person. Chuck's number one interest is himself, and at the moment he's drowning in self-pity. A lot of that is understandable; he is completely alone, feels guilty for his "involvement" in his father's death, and is most likely ashamed for being such a "disappointment" to him. The other reason then that Chuck is (will be) pushing Blair away is because he has no interest in anything other than himself at the moment.

I think this episode was definately an emotional roller coaster, but as charming and effortless that Chuck appears to be in this particular case he is greatly paralleled with the character of Hamlet as he undergoes a grave debate of life and death after losing his father, the King. Although the prince is left with great fortune he still feels betrayal and hatred towards his own step mother Lily Bass and is not ready to give into her alluring ways of loving what is left of him. It may not be exactly the same as Shakespeare, we are talking about Gossip Girl here, but it does come damn close. Chuck has become a tragic hero and this episode perfectly udnermines and pins his tragic flaw is restraint from commitment. Thanks Gossip Girl for allowing your self to be literate and poetic even for a teen fiction show. :D

^ That's a very good way to describe it, I'm surprised I didn't think of Hamlet when I watched this...as it is one of my favorite books =)

In fact, the way Chuck was avoiding Blair and throwing her off kind of reminds me of how Hamlet dissed Ophelia, like when he (hamlet) told her he never loved her and shouted that All men should never get married, or something along those lines. Seeing the way his father was being mourned and how his mom remarried so fast, is similar to how Chuck was looking at Lily and Rufus. But in my opinion..I don't really think anyone was mourning deeply for Bart <_<
