I've done some exhaustive research on the title, and this is what I've found (oh and p.s. it's not really that funny).
It is based on the title of a famous book called "They shoot horses, don't they?"
Summary: It's about this guy named Robert who goes to Hollywood to be an actor, and the morning he fails to get a job as an extra he meets this actress name Gloria. As a way to get noticed by studio producers, they enroll in a dance marathon contest, in which they have to dance continuously for two hours at a time and can have a ten minute break between each set. They talk a lot during the dance marathon and Robert finds out that Gloria is very depressed about failling as an actress, she tells him several times that she would kill herself if she had the courage to do so. Blah blah blah... at the end of the marathon, they end up not winning, and then Robert and Gloria go outside for the first time in five weeks and sit on the pier looking at the ocean. Gloria takes a pistol out of her bag and asks Robert to shoot her, which he does. He remembers when he was young, when his grandfather shot the beloved family horse, which had broken its leg. The police ask Robert why he shot Gloria, and he answers, because she asked me to. The policeman persists. Robert answers, "They shoot horses, don't they?"
Ummm... SAD
Ok, there is also a movie that is based on the same premise and has the same tragic ending.
On a happier note, there is also a Gilmore Girls episode (yay!) that is titled They Shoot Gilmores, Don't They? In that episode, Rory and Lorelai participate in the Star's Hollow 24hr dance competition, during which Rory gets dumped by Jess and her and Lorelai end up losing to Kirk for the 5th year in a row.
Hmmm... does this help anyone?
I can't imagine a dance marathon on Gossip Girl but I have a feeling it is heading that way...

*** Rory gets dumped by Dean, not Jess. Acutally, her and Jess end up together in the next episode which is AWESOME because Jess is so freaking a** hot! (Not as hot as Chuck Bass of course, but he's pretty dreamy all the same.)

Sorry Plotting in Pastel... I had know idea. Now I remember the Gilmore ep so... not so funny. I think maybe HD will go for the vampire (actor). Sorry Dan. :( But is just an idea.

LOL it's ok, I think the title is funny too! I didn't realize the premise was so morbid until I did some research. Someone in another forum told me that this was the episode of Cotillion, which makes sense becuase it will involve lots of dancing (although not a dance marathon) and Jenny will be the main partcipant in that SL, so that makes sense! I hope she either gets presented by Eric (CUTE!) or some hot new boy because she really needs one, and not Asher from season 1 or that creepy science guy from "Seder Anything" -- booo!!!

Maybe Dan and Serena will realize/confess their love for each other and ditch their parents' wedding. At least that's what I want.
You can turn on the grasshopping noises now.

Well I think that the hole Serena&Dan drama is dead... for now. But the Jenny thing sounds interesting... And YEES we need someone new for her...
P.S: I Loved the hole Jenny & Nate story:X It made Nate less... boring. Hope that they will be back later on.:)
